  • Well in the FWIW dept, I saw where Ku picked up a couple of CB’S for Langford , but trail according to 247 by a substantial to Indiana for him.

If it came down to it which would you prefer? - - - Grimes Or Langford? - if we could only have one of them. - -I just think Grimes is the better OVERALL player, maybe a little better frame of mind is that right? - or game attitude? - they talk about how Langford somethings come to easy for him has a tendency to relax/lazy at times? - -Grimes bust his ass - this is just me, who would you prefer? - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer54

I prefer Grimes but these two guys might end up being a splitting hairs type deal. The edge for Grimes with me is the ability to play both guard positions which is a need for next years team. I think they are both going into College with intentions of being OAD’s

  • I prefer Langford personally. I think he is a better athlete and will be able to score from 3 levels right away. I think Grimes will end up stuck as a wing who only shoots 3s his first season or two and then develop into a guy who can score at all 3 levels.

Depends on the roster. If KU doesn’t get Dotson (likely, imo) but then gets Grimes and another guard at random. Then say Newman goes pro as expected. Grimes is one of the top 3 ball handlers on the team*, he would run back-up point and play mostly 2 guard imo.

Langford is definitely a 2/wing under Self.

*Moore and Garrett being the other two.

  • @BShark It is like splitting hairs. I think there is room for both. I think it may come down to who commits first (I think Langford’s recruitment is about to move pretty quick now, but I have no details to support that. Just seems like it will). I’m afraid that Grimes is scared of Langford and will go elsewhere if we get him. Have to be able to sell both of them on playing together.

I would think it would be an easy pitch to Grimes. Hey, you want to be an NBA PG. Well having this guy on the court with you will make that job easier. Not to mention, you won’t even see the PG position if you go to UK. Here, we have one PG and you will be the other main ball handler.

  • @Kcmatt7 Agree it’s close and there is room for both. If I could choose I’d probably take Dotson and Grimes.

    Dotson/Moore/Garrett/Grimes

    Moore/Garrett/Grimes/Langford

Hard to go wrong either way.

I count Cunliffe and KJ as more 3/4 types.

  • That ordering is in order of who you’d want running the point in my own opinion. I do know that some prefer Garrett to Moore.

  • @BShark They should be backups. No doubt about it. Solid backups, but Cunliffe and KJ are not blue blood starters.

  • @BShark I personally like Garrett as a utility guy. I haven’t seen him handle the ball well enough in a college game to be comfortable with him running point. However, I think he handles the ball extremely well for all other positions on the court and could be a huge mismatch at the 2-4 spots.

  • @Kcmatt7 Yeah. They will be nice utility players to have next year. Can back-up the wing or the 4 in match-ups where we need to go small.

As for Garrett my own thoughts are known but there are those that think he can run point in time. Garrett certainly has “IT” which we know Self loves.

  • Landing Grimes and Langford and we sing his praises for years.

I feel the same with Dotson as well.

As weak as the 2018 class is overall these 3 guards are no question really good players. They are all option A type recruits. We landed potentially the best College 5 in the class and one of Top 5 4’s in the class as well. That’s some crazy good recruiting and relationships developed.

Hopefully it all works out, KU is due for this type of class that keeps us at the top

3-4 year guy that knows he is a big and fits what Self wants like a glove vs a talented but head case OAD 7 footer with effort issues. Hmm I know what I’d take.

  • ESPN listed Langford and Grimes #8 and #9 in their way too early 2019 Draft board…

Yeah good luck seeing these kids past their 1 year

  • How does Romeo pronounce his name? Roh-MAY-oh or ROH-me-oh?

Wow Grimes is climbing. Was really hoping he’d be a 2 year guy.

  • If I had to choose between the two, I would pick Grimes. You can never have enough ball handlers. True, Langford is one of those scorers that could glide his way to 30 on any given night. He could end up being a superstar. So my preference isn’t even necessarily that Grimes is hands down the better player. Honestly, I’m not sure either is “hands down” better than the other.

It’s just that Grimes can fit with any combination of players. He can slide into a ball handling role if we have a ton of wings. If we land a guy like Dotson, Grimes slots nicely as a wing. If Vick stays, he can be the secondary ball handler. Langford is a true 2. He will be the starting shooting guard wherever he goes. But if you lack ball handlers, Langford isn’t going to slide into that role. He may be the better player (reasonable people can disagree on that), but he is not the more versatile one (Grimes can fit in any scheme with any personnel group - he’s a smaller version of Josh Jackson in that respect. Put him on the floor with four other guys and he will find a way to fit).

I’d take Grimes over Langford, but would prefer both because that would be one heck of a backcourt.

  • Marcus Garret can play PG. As a PG he led his team to the State semifinal and was the Gatorade POY in Texas, all of this as a PG. Read some of the comments here and here about him playing not only PG but all 3 guard positions. I believe he would be a very capable PG for KU.

  • Self already loves Garrett. I’d bet on him being the 5th “small” this year.

  • @JayHawkFanToo People saying that remind me of the same people who said they though Bragg would be able to play some at the 3 spot before we ever saw him actually play.

Garrett was the best player on the court 99% of the time. Why not just put the ball in his hands to start? It is similar to a lot of high schools or even colleges just putting their best athlete at QB.

  • @Kcmatt7

Yes, but…in HS Bragg played PF and Center and we only assumed he could play the 3. Garret actually played PG in HS and by all accounts he was the the general on the floor and he was selected POY as a PG. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Since we are talking about it again, I will reiterate my opinion. I don’t think he ever starts at PG at KU. I think he is a plus level ball handler at the 2, and an elite ball handler at the 3. He is quite possibly tough enough to bang in the paint this year as KU has no depth inside.

Agree w/ you on Bragg. The same people that thought Marcus or Perry would play the 3. Lateral quickness matters. Defense matters. Now I do absolutely think Garrett is a guy you can ask to defend an opposing point. He is long and disruptive. Quick. He will also rebound well for his position.

Just as staunchly one of my friends believes Garrett is a better PG option than Moore.

Like you say @JayHawkFanToo we will find out what Self does when the games come around.

  • @BShark

Just as staunchly one of my friends believes Garrett is a better PG option than Moore.

Your friend might be onto something. Garrett is a gem for this program. I mean Self probably could use him at 4 positions and he might be able to defend them all. We’ll see though everyone looks good on paper before they get put in pressure situations. Given how he was coached, what we know about his character and his talents I think we will all be super happy Garrett isn’t playing against us!

  • Didn’t Perry more or less play the 3 while labeled a 4 his Sr. year? Before it officially morphed into the 4-1.

Sounds like a business decision type deal for Grimes. Sure hope it will be KU.

  • I see where we just got another CB for Romeo, look out. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
