@BShark Yup. When we lived in Leavenworth, our best friends bought 50 acres outside of Winchester off 134th Street and are still there. They have horses. It seemed like another world from Leavenworth in 1975 and lots of parties at the pond, fishing and his brother had another plot off of 92 by Springdale. Mike would go every winter to hunt with the two of them.

@RockChalkinTexas-0 We had quite a bit of excess land. But it became a burden more than anything. Paying taxes on it, and we were in a bad agreement with some farmers from before I was born. Sold it quite a ways back. Definitely took some losses in the 2008 recession but at the time safe stock plays seemed smart. In hindsight, would have been better to do anything else with the money.

Just getting back on the site after about a month. My excuse for my absence is like others... I lost my dad on May 3. At 91, he had plenty of good years and was probably more ready than the rest of us.
He complained of pain (more than normal) in March and April. My mom had a lot of tests lined up. But when he collapsed in his bathroom on April 22 they found his pelvis had a fracture that had been there for a while... and they found lots of lesions, which had weakened the bone. They accelerated the tests and found his skeleton riddled with metastases. Turned out to be advanced metastatic prostate cancer, which is what I was diagnosed with 10 years ago.
How, you ask, did my dad's rapidly rising PSA (7.7 in 2023 to 288, a few days before he died) go undetected?? Apparently his urologist decided it was ok to stop testing his PSA in 2023. By the time his cancer was discovered from the scans, he was dead before the biopsy results came back.
The moral of the story is: GUYS, get your PSA checked regularly and DON'T let a doctor talk you out of it. They are cheap. There is no good reason to not track PSA.
My cancer was not caught early because of a recommendation by the US Preventable Services Task Force ruling in 2012 advising against routine PSA screening for all men. The USPSTF significantly changed its prostate cancer screening guidelines in May 2018. Too late for me and many other men across this country. The harm is incalculable. Still, I've been fortunate to manage it for nearly 10 years with the amazing medical care at a Cancer Center of Excellence.

Hi guys. I’ve been a bit of a ghost this summer. Its been a tough one for me. Mom died July 3rd. I burnt out a bit, and went into social hibernation but I’m still here. Will have something more substantive to share with the long-timers in a bit regarding my passion project. I continue to dream of a better tomorrow enabled by better technology.
I hope you are all well and happy. We have started a 2000 piece puzzle, about 500 pieces of which are non descript blue. Ive started with those pieces first; much is trial and error.
Watching Escape from Dannemora. Excellent, star studded, but not for the faint of heart.
Have been lifting for about a month. Can you guys tell? Just say yes.
We dont have cable at the moment but do have ESPN. Not sure what this will be like but look forward to catching games with you.

@approxinfinity Welcome back, brother! I hope you get all the pieces together - and the puzzle too. I'm sorry about your mom. We just buried my mother in law a couple of weeks ago. Life is definitely a challenge sometimes. Hang in there.

We certainly understand and don't blame you for taking some time away.
Just lost my Grandma a few days ago (mom's side). Didn't get to say goodbye to my mom from a sudden passing but this time I was able to say goodbye so finding comfort in that. She lived a good life.
Otherwise just chugging along, my son is playing travel baseball and games start this weekend. Of course he is a pitcher and a good one so my anxiety will be sky high rooting for him on the mound this weekend.
I saw boot camp started for the basketball team today from socials. That used to be a big story starting it all off

@approxinfinity as soon as I saw your post, I thought you’d been hitting the weights!! Welcome back, it’s tough when your parents get older. I never thought I bury my dad at 27 and my mom at 35 but I did it (my age not theirs). I come to realize it’s not easy whether it’s unexpectedly or not.

Mayjay update: Lingering for a few nights in Santa Fe on our long move cross country to LV. We moved out of our house in Hilton Head on August 17, and we are supposed to close in LV on our house in Summerlin on Sept 25th. That will end 44 days of being itinerant retirees bouncing from motel to motel, with just 2 nights with friends. Packing 3 Pods was a nightmare because we had lots of stuff in storage while showing our house--hey, here's some free advice: GET RID OF CRAP WHILE YOU CAN! Anyway, once we are settled (best guess, sometime in the 2030's) I will be back here more often. Meanwhile, my heart goes out to all of you who have lost loved ones or are facing health issues. We have had tumult and chaos, but we are fully aware we are lucky to be able to make the choices causing our upheaval. Not everyone is so fortunate. Good luck to all of my friends here and to our teams! I'll be lurking until about October....

Somehow missed this thread. We've got a nice little community here. I posted earlier about my dad dying in June at the age of 94. I retired June 1 and have had a summer of funeral planning, and dealing with a lot of weird drama at my church, then getting cussed out by my brother an hour before Dads funeral. He doesn't handle things very well and well, it was ugly, but I've always been the meek one in cases like that, so I just took it instead of making it look worse. We're selling an old house in Wisconsin that a renter had trashed, a renter whom we had rented to cheaply because he was poor. You haven't lived until you've cleaned another mans uh, filth, off the bathroom floor and walls. (how does it get there?!!). Closing Tuesday. Ma approaching 90 and thankful to have her still of sound mind and decent health to boot.
Had an awesome retirement trip to Switzerland. Stayed in Interlaken for a week and then 2 nights in Zermatt$$$ and flew home right next to a dude wearing a misery shirt hours after they had beaten us in the big game. He was really nice though, didn't care that much for football.

I must say I 2nd @bskeet's rec for getting your PSA test. A couple of you i know don't have prostates
but it's the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths for men which may surprise you but so many men get it, by percent it's not horribly deadly. I had it, kept an eye on it for about 3 years, but then my PSA started going up and a biopsy showed it advanced to a gleason 7 which is like stage 3 prostate cancer and they yanked it out one day. My dad who just passed had a very slow growing prostate cancer for about 25 years and didn't die from it but from other things. Easy blood test.
