FRANK MOVES UP IN POY

  • @KUSTEVE If Frank can just maintain that consistency he has shown this year - -who knows might just take that puppy, would be well deserved for sure. – I’m just afraid the Coast Biased will screw him over, Josh Hart? - -ya he is a very good player, BUT is he better then Frank? - -I don’t think so, maybe that’s just my Crimson and Blue bleeding through - -BUT I mean who would suffer more if Villanova was to lose Hart - OR KU lose Frank? - -would be close but I think we have THE GUY - - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Josh Hart is shooting 38% from 3. He’s a better rebounder, but he is 6’6". He’s averaging fewer points and assists. So I don’t know, it sounds to me like he’s not doing as much for his team as Frank Mason is. I sometimes dislike discussions like this because I think Josh Hart is a great player too, but a side by side comparison favors Frank by a little bit.

As a Badger fan, watching Caleb Swanigan destroy us the last two years puts him right up there too. He’s a beast inside.

  • @wissox Very true. you look at Frank for the season shooting 54.9% from three, now you ready for this? - -Frank is shooting 68.4% from three in Big 12 play - - Frank is shooting 53.2% from the filed over all 74.7 free throw % BUT 86.2% in Big 12 play 5.6 asst’s per game and scoring 20.4 over all But 22.7 in Big 12 per. I dunno would be sweet but who knows? - -I know Frank would take a National Championship over player of the year - -but then again IF w won the National Championship there would be a really good chance he gets both. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @wissox

Hart probably has been getting more attention because he plays on the defending national champions and he has the East Coast media to back him up.

Are numbers all that decide who’s having the better year though?

We are not talking a big difference in scoring average between the two and the only other category Frank has an advantage in besides 3pt% is assists which he should be because he has the ball more. Hart has been the leader because he had big early season games against Purdue, Wake Forest, and Notre Dame. The ND & Depaul games especially were games he singe-handily won.

Frank did have the early defining moment of the year when he hit the game winner against Duke. He’s now coming on even stronger averaging close to 23 a game in conference play while Hart is at 19 a game. I think Hart had it locked up early but now Mason is starting to get more and more momentum (and publicity) as we hit the middle of the season. If Frank continues this pace he’s going to surpass Hart as the leader.

Honestly I don’t think I could choose which one is more important to their team right now without knowing how the season ends. Both teams are playing with short benches and relying so much on their Senior Leaders every game. Villanova might not even be a Top 20 team without Hart, he’s the clear cut “guy” on that team. I could also argue we’d be lost without Mason because we would be, but some may argue that with Devonte & Josh on the team we’d still be pretty good.

It’s great to have a Hawk possibly winning POY especially when KU is known for balance and not having guys that score 20 a game. It would be an amazing accomplishment for a guy that was supposed to be playing at Towson ( I know I sound like Fran) bringing up the Towson story but how remarkable would this be.

Here is how I see the POY battle so far

    1. A. Frank Mason, 1 B. Josh Hart

    2. Lonzo Ball

    3. Luke Kennard

    4. Caleb Swanigan

    5. Malik Monk

    6. Ethan Happ

    7. Justin Jackson

    8. Melo Trimble

    9. TJ Leaf

  • @BeddieKU23 you forgot, there’s only 1, BIFM ! I know, I’m getting old!😉

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I wonder if the students will start wearing T-Shirts with that. Or are they already? Can’t hurt when we play every home game on ESPN to have the student section repping him for POY

  • @BeddieKU23 Kudos for putting Ethan Happ on your list! He’s one of those unique type of players that UW seems to get. If any of you readers have never seen him, tonight 6pm against OSU, should be a gimmie for the Badgers. But watch Happs footwork. And then watch him steal the ball. For a 6’10" freshman to lead the Big10 in steals like he did last year, well it was one of the years more remarkable stories.

  • @KUSTEVE

Frank is real point guard news in an era of fake point guard news.

I think the media ones are voted on before the tournament. But, if we win the Big 12 I think that publicity might propel him over the line.

  • @wissox

I’m jealous he’s on Wisconsin. Amazing that he took a red-shirt but that was the Bo Ryan way. He’s a rare post scorer, really knows angle’s and his footwork is obviously really good.

I had Happ higher until Swanigan started putting up absurd double double numbers and has Purdue playing good basketball. Monk with his monster game against UNC + averaging over 20 points as a freshman is pretty remarkable so he cracks the top 5 for me.

  • @BeddieKU23 Unbalanced Big1G schedule means Swanigan and Purdue don’t visit Wisconsin this season. I kind of don’t like that. I’m assuming that matchup turns in Madison.

  • @wissox

I hate the unbalanced schedules and you’re right, its robbing the league of what would be a huge game

  • @BeddieKU23

Pretty good list except for Melo Trimble; I believe he’s way overrated. I have seen him play several times and the Big 12 alone has 3-4 better PGs.

  • @JayHawkFanToo

No doubt the Big-12 has better PG’s and I’m not a fan of Trimble at all.

The reason I’m giving him some praise for POY is because Maryland is far surpassing expectations in my mind. They lost everything but Trimble and they are 15-2 and 3-1 in league play. We all know Turgeon is a quality coach and he’s getting contributions from his freshman and they are winning. Now of course if you dig a little deeper you will find Maryland hasn’t played a single ranked team at the time of playing them and their best wins to date are Kansas St and Indiana. Trimble is scoring but he’s not really a distributor on this team as they are using Cowan as the main PG. Seems to be working so far. I expect once the heart of their schedule gets here that Trimble we will see just how good Trimble is

  • @KUSTEVE Frank is a “bad man”! He is this years Buddy Hield story. Unranked unknown to potential POY.

If Isaiah Thomas can play pro ball for the Celts, then Frank can be a pro too

  • Interesting that we talk about east coast biased player rankings but 2 of the top 7 players on that list are Frank and Josh.

Josh being on that list is a bit surprising to me. He’s nice and all that, but not sure he’s a c0ntender for player of the year.

  • @wissox

This team would be a hot mess without Jackson. We see how much it effects the team when he’s sitting on the bench with fouls. He’s not a great shooter and his #'s will never support him being a true POY contender but I do think he is the glue keeping this team together. Never thought it would be possible for an OAD to be so vital to success under Self but that’s what Jackson is to this team.

  • @Lulufulu I started Thomas several times on my Draft Kings teams, and he’s a little bad ass. I love watching the calmer, more poised Frank Mason. Still wish he would pass the ball more, BUT 28 points w 5 dimes is strong as horseradish. Talk about a stupid call on my part- I remember floating the idea that maybe Francamp could start over Frank after the 2013 season. i mean…that was Skip Bayless stupid.

  • @KUSTEVE No, nowhere near that stupid. In fact, you turned out to be wrong. Nothing bad about that. If Frank had played HS bb in Kansas and CF had never been heard of until signed, you would have felt just the opposite. Familiarity breeds contentment.

    Predictions like these ain’t science!

  • @mayjay what?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Okay, I deleted mine, too. No fair!

  • @mayjay was really hoping everyone knew I was kidding!😳

  • @BeddieKU23 That’s not a bad idea, couldn’t hurt - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I certainly did!
