I really think Wayne has the best shot of this group to make an NBA roster. Perry and Cliff will most likely end up over seas, which isn’t always bad Langford has had a great career and made good money over there.

We are a better team with JJ than we were with Wayne. Wish all McDAAs could play like JJ. How rare is it for a frosh to function like JJ in Self’s system? Ultra-rare.
Now I see what Calipari expects out of his frosh heavy squads. His heavy hauls usually net 2-3 players that can play right away like JJ, and if a couple more are close, that all-frosh-chemistry can force everybody to be better, especially by March. That’s how he does it.

@ralster Regarding Josh, I view him as the absolutely best find, best fit, in the Bill Self Jayhawk Era. Wiggins and Embiid were very talented recruits, well on their way to professional stardom. This kid Jackson was MADE for Jayhawk Hoops under the tutelage of Bill Self. A rare gem indeed.

@BeddieKU23 Anthony Davis was inactive that game giving Diallo a chance to prove himself. Hopefully it earned him some more minutes.

Likely he won’t with the way Davis is playing at an All-Star Level and is the only Pelican with a pulse this year. It was nice to see Diallo produce given the chance.

@BeddieKU23 I agree he won’t take minutes from AD, but maybe from the backup PF forget his name. Even if he gets assigned to a Dleague team he needs PT to develop.

The Pelicans are already at a point where Diallo should stay where he is after the way he played last night. There’s value to letting him play in some role because the season is already lost for New Orleans. Play your young talent and hope he can find a rotation spot in the 2nd unit or if an injury occurred the chance to start

@REHawk Agree totally about JJ. Best playing frosh Ive seen under Self. He actually makes the team function better–on both ends of the floor. Never seen that out of any level frosh in Self’s 13yrs at KU. His length + athleticism are great, but his court-vision and inner drive and instincts simply make him amazing to watch. And, his 3ball is only going to get better…

I will never comment on basketball again because I know nothing about this game. If you had bet me that some day, especially this year, that Cheick would have a double double in the NBA you could have probably won my house! I wouldn’t have given him a chance to ever score more than a few points.

Thanks for posting the info. I know of some players who have bounced back and forth but Im not certain of how many have managed to unpack their bags and stay. I suppose the money most fringe players can make overseas is too attractive to pass up.

I agree I would have taken that bet as well. He was given an opportunity and really made the most of it. He made I think 6 jumpers and had one play where he drove the lane left handed and finished with his left and it was a thing of beauty to see. He looked more comfortable is the pace of the NBA game.
He played again last night but Davis was back and only got 9 minutes- 4 pts 4 boards effort. He’ll need to show more to take Terrance Jones’s spot in the rotation otherwise those are the kind of minutes he’ll get if he’s still with the Pelicans

@BeddieKU23 4 pts, 4 rebs in 9 minutes will get him a lot more looks over time. Certainly beats his DNP stats from earlier.
Get a rep as a reliable sub and you will get your chances.

@wissox I had figured that a few years down the way Cheick was likely to make his mark. But to glean a double double THIS YEAR? WOW! A crime that his year at Kansas was scotched by shaky NCAA sanctions. We might have been offered the chance to see some explosive stuff from that 7’4" wingspan and Kevin Young type zeal. In the final analysis, the governing body did much to detract from excitement of the college hoops game, esp. for diehard Kansas fans. Cheick bore some thrilling promise right from the getgo.

Not surprised to see Cliff and Diallo playing well. Both of those guys have a ton of physical talent. Remember, there are a finite number of people on this planet with the physical gifts to play in the NBA, or even the D-League. Cliff and Cheick both have NBA talent.
Cheick, with that developing jumper, can be a stretch four, kind of a poor man’s Serge Ibaka.
Cliff is probably going to develop into a Tristan Thompson type rebounder/defender. He’s strong enough to go against true centers even though he isn’t as tall, and his long arms help him match up there, plus he can still handle 4’s. There’s a place in the NBA for him.

Anyone else recall the days when fans used to doubt Bill Self’s judgement about who should and shouldn’t play on his rosters?
Remember all the guys that just needed the PT to be NBA track players.
Self has to deal with these phenoms every season–these guys that are going to be NBA stars in a year–and most of them he has to tell them learn to play first.
Fans say, but Bill, this kid is ready to play right now. He is going to be a star in the NBA. He was in the top 100.
Ummmm, VERY few guys make it big in the NBA from ANY program in the country. During the Long stack era that only lasted a couple of years, the long stack schools did have quite a few draft choices. But, my god, how many of the long stack school players actually turned into NBA stars? Not that many. Half maybe? More like a quarter probably.
And among the rest of the short stacks like KU? Its slim.
Self has a lot of NBA players, but to be a star is really scarce.
The ratio of washouts and journeyman to NBA starters and stars is super high.
The three KU players mentioned above were all fine prospects. Perry made himself into a fine college basketball player. But the NBA is just like an exo-league, or something. The guys are just unbelievably good at that level.

I do like Cliff’s chances for getting to the L one day. Rebounding and defending can always find a spot at the end of the bench.
