Lucas got a lot of credit for stabilizing our team last year…and stepped up his game after that whole mess of meetings between coach and ‘The Core’. But not seeing carryover and we don’t have the cohesiveness that thought we might see mixing experience and new talent.
Maybe IU with their offensive approach isn’t a bellweather for where we are against a more balanced approach team.
IU seems insane offensively. Shooters at every position. Crean puts a premium on it when recruiting, and rightly so.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I wonder if us losing these early season games have hurt recruiting, we lose about every year in the champs classic its getting a little old.
-
@HawkChamp agree with that on Devonte. Thought he was actually more aggressive tonight though. Still room no question
-
Yeah, Devonte is going to have to get back up on that edge again.
But it will be harder, because they are scheming on him, now. Last year he was the third option behind Perry and Frank. Now he is second option, maybe even first if he gets untracked. It will take a few games for him to get used to the increased attention. But he should adjust, unless he too is playing with unreported injuries, which it sure looks like. But I’m withholding judgement since folks said he was just battling cramps.

As I said before. Lucky it’s early. Very humbling. Now maybe we can get past the hype and get down to business
Self would have rather had a win ofc but secretly he is a little happy.

well this team just missed shots period, so many missed bunnies, so many missed shots from guys that usually make them. some FT’s as well at critical times.
Yep missed a lot at the rim. The curse continues.
-
It’s like the spread offense in College Football. This is the new College Basketball. Self playing 4 guards is at least aware but late to the party
-
@BShark agreed
-
@BeddieKU23 Ya to me it was disappointing to see their freshman make fts while our senior bricked 2 huge ones not to put it all on LL but that was really what gave them a lead in OT. Rebounding, Defense and shooting 3 areas that we do better in one we win this contest.
-
@kjayhawks well I don’t see Alabama going or Lsu or miss state or Washington… Etc
-
@DanR Good take. We beat them in every stat except 3 pointers (we were 7/21) and rebounds (-11).
-
yes those misses were disturbing as he didnt even come close on either attempt. froze under pressure
-
@BeddieKU23 but hit nearly 79% FT’s…not terrible.
Offensive boards and 3pt shooting for IU were our achilles heel.
-
So, I asked awhile back in the thread if anyone knew what became of @HighEliteMajor ?
It was OT, so maybe everyone was too busy.
Anyone have any idea what became of HEM?
-
@approxinfinity Yep I been saying rebounds all night, not much you can do but put a hand in a guys face I don’t think we gave them a ton of open looks
-
most of it from 1 player. FT shooting didn’t lose the game in my mind. Too many missed shots and IU made theirs
-
@BShark yeah, guess we see why.
Don’t know that that wins % wise as more balanced, but sure can make for some big wins in big games.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I agree I’m glad we play a tough schedule I believe it help break the horses just wish we won a few more lol
-
I can see why Coach wants to play the 4 and 1. Yet one problem they were still trying to pound the ball inside. Man I’m really confused and to tell you the truth a lot worried.
-
@jaybate-1.0 Just guessing he got tired of the bickering his posts seemed to inspire. I always liked his stuff, well almost always. Maybe he’ll show up again. People come and go.

Looks like we shot 50% from 2pt range to go with under 32% from 3. So does look like shooting % is down.
-
@BeddieKU23 I can’t really fault the offense. 45% isnt great but that with the exceptional FTs was enough to get us 99 pts and put us in position to win most games. As much as the offense felt flat at times, it still produced (although the FT % is probably anomalous).
I hope next practice is all about defensive rotations, how to rebound, and how not to get fouls called on you.
-
I don’t think we tried to pick and pop with Bragg all night. Bragg played well besides the fouls and a missed bunny. But for this team to maximize its potential it needs to plug Jackson into the game offensively and use Bragg as a outside mismatch. We didn’t do much tonight other than let Mason go wild, which he was terrific.
-
@kjayhawks yeah, they were +11 on the glass. How many teams are going to make all those step back hand in the face threes? Most opponents would have struggled with that. If Duke doesn’t make 15 threes, we have a chance.
-
@jaybate-1.0 And they still haven’t solved his cramping issue.
-
@Bwag doesn’t help we have 4 hr games!
-
Felt like they made as many 3s as we attempted.
I set my DVR to record an extra 30 min and still missed the overtime plus. Luckily, I have no desire to go back and watch the game.
-
I just had a thought. We gave up 10 and 3 points. Maybe that had a lot to do with us losing this game. I can’t remember the last time we gave up 10 and 3 points.
-
@BeddieKU23 yeah, I’m wondering about our scheming.
Outside of playing personnel changes 4-1, not sure I’m seeing anything yet that says we will use that to maximum effect.
-

Yepppp. Knew if we lost, threes would be the reason.
Also will say it again, post game talk pretty rational here. I don’t even dare load up the Phog.
-
I expected the fouls to be out of control because the refs are under a microscope to enforce new rules like every year. But there is little consistency as always.
The shooting % was okay, enough to win games but shots that were critical really hurt us in the end.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 yeah, too many fouls.
Why does the NCAA have to keep jacking with these early season games.
-
Rebounding is going to be a problem for this team. Our best rebounder is our point guard.
Landen WAS a good rebounder, but now he seems to be injured and not likely to pull down big numbers against most teams, until his foot heals.
Bragg apparently lacks the rebounding gene. He’s big enough and strong enough now, but he just doesn’t get tot he ball.
Our perimeter guys are athletic and tall, but none of them but Frank has the rebounding gene…not even Josh. Josh gets some caroms because he is so springy, but he doesn’t have a clue about how to get rebounding position against D1 players.
This will be really interesting to watch how Self deals with this issue.
I suspect we will see some very serious rebounding drills for a few weeks to see if there can be any improvement.
But what he might do if there isn’t, wow, it is hat rabbit time again.
-
@wissox I was thinking the same idk that we have gave up that much in the self era.
-
Nice of a game that had a tip time of 8pm to end around midnight. Thanks again refs. Gotta try to get some sleep!
-
iU made 15 3s, KU 7, that is a 24 point differential right there. They will likely not get that lucky again.
-
@JayHawkFanToo IU might…that’s their game…
Duke can probably do the same things with K’s philosophy.
-
6 is going to come early, good night buckets. Its been fun talking ball with you guys. I loved the uniforms tonight, paying tribute with the crazy stuff going on in our country is awesome and I like the character it shows, Thanks again to the Veterans! RCJH
-
It’s early and Self said the 4 guard lineup wasn’t very good yet but offered the most long term potential.
we’ll see tonight wasn’t a very good first impression of what most fans think could be the year. again I’m not overreacting but we shouldn’t have lost and we did.
-
@Bwag exactly. We dont live in 1950. Today’s a shooters game
-
My thinking too. I just kept watching IU get one after another rebounded on offense. You can’t win that way I don’t care how much talent you have.
Bottom line IU crashed the boards and KU didn’t. MY fear is this something that can me fixed?
-
That’s a good point.
We played well enough to win.
Not our best, but well enough.
We’re a good team.
We just have some injury issues and Josh has to figure out how to position on defense one and two passes away.
And Self has to go to the drawing board on rebounding. Its not that we are a bad rebounding team. Indiana is a good rebounding team, so we have nothing to be ashamed of. But if we are going to play this small, our small guys have to really by into positioning most of the time, and climbing up the backs of people, when they can’t get position.
-
Thought we were supposed to rank near the top of Self teams defensively… 103 later … FUCK!
-
Where’s that article written from 2026 looking back where Self embraced the 3 point shot and the team went on to win more championships?
That’s looking pretty implausible at this point.
-
@Bwag now that I think about it, you’re right. We would need to be able to match Dukes three point output, something we didn’t do tonight.
@Jaybate I don’t agree about the “rebounding gene” but I do think Carlton and Josh can be taught better rebounding skills. The coaching staff needs to work with them
-
IU’s offense is one that lives on 3’s, much like Duke. If they were missing them this wouldn’t have been a close game. Crean has changed his offense and has made it exciting. Self has to adapt and I’m sure he’ll do it
-
On a happier note, Embiid scores 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead the sixes to their first win of the season.
-
Yeah, I’m not trying to rag on Josh here. I’m just trying to analyse the break downs. A lot of times he just wasn’t remembering proper position one and two passes away. In Self defense, you have to be able to play on ball AND help one and two passes away. Josh is a fine on ball defender 90 percent of the time; that’s not the issue. The problem is his foot positioning when the ball is away. But this was his first game, and he clearly had to experience this kind of play and talent and strength, before he could begin adjusting to it. He will over the next few weeks.
-
Good for Joel.
-
Gotta do the sand man thing.
Here’s to some work on footwork and positioning on defense and rebounding.
And to getting healthy.
Rock Chalk.
