  Joe Dooley needs another step up before being considered by major programs. Very unlikely he would jump from Florida Gulf Coast to Indiana; obviously not unprecedented mind you, but a very long shot.

  @wrwlumpy I would’ve given anything at that age to go play for KU let alone seeing the world for free while playing bundle that up with a free education and I don’t believe these guys have it all that bad.

  @HighEliteMajor Ha! Love the sarcasm. Also agree with no sure-fire formula. The mid-major land mine: Self keeps scheduling very good mid-majors. The elite program danger. We’ve played Duke and KY alot recently. Only sure-fire thing would be how to get a team playing to peak effectiveness for 6 games straight, especially those last 4 against very good competition. Self’s mentioned it over the years, if he or any coach knew how, they could bottle it. Brad Stephens doesnt even know, nor does Mark Few. Nor does Coach K or Calipari. Roy’s team won a NC despite having an ugly offensive night, but actually played D. Go figure.

I remembered the James thing wrong: he actually thought about entering the draft as a junior in HS, and that was what would have required a challenge to the NBA draft rule of waiting until a player graduated HS. Stern wanted to impose an age limit (20 yrs old) in the late 90’s after the half season debacle, but got nowhere. As for antitrust, it is not the same for all sports. MLB has a unique exemption created by the Sup Ct in 1922, where the court ludicrously exempted baseball from antitrust on the grounds that it is an exhibition or entertainment, not a monopoly. Basketball and football are exempt, according to the courts that have considered challenges, primarily because all the issues that have been raised have been deemed to be subject to collective bargaining. The unions by agreeing to CBAs perpetuate their members inability to raise antitrust issues. That is why the unions have both decertified at times–to take disputes out of labor law and into antitrust, which would apply were there no CBA. They always cave, though, when the owners cough up something they want, especially stuff like free agency. The baseball exemption is the iffy one for owners and that is why they don’t want to ever let the issue go back for review of that 1922 ruling. That is also, I think, why the players union in mlb is the strongest union in sports–its existence preserves the owners “exhibitions”.

Did you notice that Texas and Big 12 member is ranked #5, defending champion and ACC member UNC #17 and and previous defending champion and Big East member Villanova #25? Maybe the last two should change conferences? Yeah but ACC, SEC, BIG 10, and PAC 12 all outrecruited the Big 12 right?

  @HighEliteMajor I agree with some of what you are saying. Stanford wasn’t a great team bye any stretch, but they played a D1 SOS. That’s one down fall to a WSU or any other mid major pick in march, its tough tell how good a team really is playing in the 150+ SOS year after year. WSU should’ve been a 5 or 4 seed and Stanford a 9 or 10. WSU could beat Stanford but we’ll never know what would’ve happened there. RPI is a joke IMO, it favors SOS too much. We were I believe a top 3 RPI team in 2014. Granted we didnt have Joel down the stretch but no way we were better than an elite 8 team IMO with him. I guess we are debating nothing at this point lol. Self isn’t playing them and I can see why, maybe some can’t but its not up to us.

  @HighEliteMajor I believe you are on the right track with a tradeoff calculus. Here is how I hypothesize the phenomenon you refer to. It appears some coaches with some brands and agents that draw well in certain viewer/bettor markets experience a kind of preferred access to top talent. If true, it would probably only take a handful of such coaches to soak up so much of that sort of talent that can win rings as freshman that it would make sense for other coaches that “could” recruit such talent to become so discouraged by the low probability of signing such talent that they simply adopt a Plan B talent suboptimization strategy, where they focus on lesser talent full time, and expect only anomalies of Plan A talent to show up rarely. Until I see evidence other than exceptions that suggest a rule, my hypothesis remains. Regarding Beilin, in particular, he appears a fit to my hypothesis (and your trade off calculus) and be supported for the time being by U of Michigan leadership, which appears to have learned from its Fab Five scandal not to jeopardize its football cash cow by taking too much risk in the murky asymmetries of basketball recruiting.   Not a whole bunch of SOS enhancers there but also not a whole bunch of SOS killers either, so it’s kind of an OK game. 7 power conference games means something to look forward to. I would quibble with calling Texas Southern a mid major however! I live 10 miles from a SWAC school and it’s pitiful. Attendance gets beat by local high schools regularly, the basketball sucks too. But good summary of the schedule!

  @Lulufulu Its only Nike sponsored teams so they won’t invite KU. And, I guess it could happen that way… If Nike ponies up more money per win in the tournament. I mean, it is all about the money. It could be the start of the end for the NCAA and they don’t even see it coming.

  @JayHawkFanToo so the premise of the article is that kids don’t want to learn to be centers, and (I guess?) they’re suggesting that tall athletic kids don’t want to play center? But they also say that big guys have foot problems. And that big guys today could be as dominant as before. This article was written when LeBron was still on Miami so maybe the GS and Houston model changes that assumption Dunno. There aren’t that many rediculously tall athletic big people to begin with. It does seem a foregone conclusion that if you have a super freak center you find him minutes. And such people are a rare breed now, as they always have been…

  Doke coming back and getting Steere would be a realistic pretty good scenario for KU. If I’m dreaming, sign up Bagley. And yes @jayballer54 it’s early, so it will take a bit for things to shake out. Kids do ask out of LOIs but usually it’s due to a coaching change, can’t blame the kid for that.

  @HawkChamp USC has a very good coach in Andy Enfield who built up FGCU and took them to the Sweet 16. USC will be in the hunt for the PAC 12 all year this season.
