Bruce's Obit

He didn’t go out with a bang, but a six minute whimper.
When it was all over, Bruce finished 9th in the league and 14-17 overall in what was a make or break season. He wasn’t up to the task despite having all of the talent he needed to be able to make the tourney. Pack was unreal. Mark Smith was a very good player. He literally was able to bring Bradford in off the bench (a luxury for most schools).
This season was really a sign of why Bruce is just not meant for P5 basketball. He’s only ever caught lightning in a bottle once, winning the league one time in his entire P5 coaching career with his own players. His elite 8 run in Manhattan may be one of the flukiest things to ever happen, and the funniest thing still is that it will probably be the best shot they ever have at a Final Four ever again. He blew it.
Bruce has gone by many names here over the years, and almost certainly KSU can’t hire someone goofier than Liberace (@KUSTEVE we miss you) aka Squeaky. But, somehow they were able to hire Huggy. Maybe a Frank Martin reunion is in order. They’ll figure something out, but it is most certainly the end of an era.
I think maybe the funniest thing about Bruce’s career is that he was always trying to escape Bill Self’s shadow. At Illinois, “the funeral” story is so funny. And for that program to only get worse after he didn’t have Bill’s players anymore forcing him to take the KSU job only to have to personally call Bill Self “daddy” for a decade is fantastic. And in so, so many press conferences you can just feel the jealousy and anger that he has for Bill. Bruce was obsessed with how he was perceived by the national media, which made him seem like such a petty little man.
Farewell purple prince. May your dreams be that of a called travel, not blowing a 16 point halftime lead at home, FBI raids, severe penalties, your name being called to be in the HOF, stools being left on the ground, and getting named NCOY after a 14-17 season because you “did it the right way.” May we never hear your voice or see you step 6 feet onto the court when play is going on ever again.
You will be missed, but not by us.

K-State fans want Underwood, who I think could be a good coach for them, but there is absolutely no reason for Underwood to take that job. He has a better gig at Illinois right now, and if he can recruit Chicago, he will always be competitive there. He has no such guarantee at KSU.

They should steal Ballard from Washburn or Bochee away from PittState. That’d be kind of cool.

Ouch. My neighbors are from that area. Dad went to KU, Mom went to Kstate. Four kids all wear KU stuff. Both sets of grandparents are purple.

I’ve never really felt the hatred for Weber. Honestly seems like a decent guy. But, if he’s really not cutting his hair to get back at KU, wow. Imagine looking in a mirror every day, combing his stupid mop head, and thinking about Bill Self. Tears rolling down his cheeks.

Bruce may believe that his wish to eventually look like a cross between Albert Einstein and Don King makes him look noble but in this day and age it feels sad. It will be interesting to see if national media looks him up when one of the FBI scrutinized teams gets a ruling. If there is a sanction then he can crow, get a haircut and his family can safely resume taking holiday pictures.

There is only one word to describe Bruce… Petty! Reminds me of some of the junk from Marsha. This dime store mentality at KSU needs to stop because they are tarnishing the B12 basketball image.
KSU earned every bit of this karma. He was a retaliation hire against KU… I feel certain of it. No intelligent administration would select him after he stopped the Self momentum at the Illini program. Yes… Bruce does it the right way… no one knows how to slip out of town at midnight when the town has torches and pitchforks circling like Bruce.
Bruce has laid down the foundation for his next hire after badmouthing KU on his way out. There must be a program out there somewhere looking for a vendetta hire. And after they suffer years of humiliation he will be run off again, but the blame will rest with the school because they were warned. Or maybe Bruce retires from basketball. I heard Marsha is still around Wichita and in need of a golf caddy. I guess he allegedly hit a hole-in-one recently… if anyone believes him.
I LOVE how Self took all of this… stating this was never a personal competition between him and Bruce. A subtle way of dismissing Bruce and never recognizing him as an equal… because he was not.

If KSU has an ounce of intelligence they will reach out to Lon Kruger and bring him into the fold for scouting/hiring a new coach. Otherwise… they probably end up with Crean. Another vendetta hire.
