Can we please get this season started? I’m bored already and tired of waiting.

RE: Furphy
Sometimes I think it’d be ok if the top talents from McDonalds and High Schools had a semi-pro league and skipped college altogether. Then we’d preserve college sports with more traditional scholarship student-athletes. Like there would still be plenty of talent to make the games high-level and exciting. It also seems just - to give top-caliber athletes a route other than college to get paid what they deserve while they pursue the NBA without distorting the fairness of our leagues. I’d still be a Jayhawk fan, to be sure, and I don’t think my enthusiasm/enjoyment would lose a step like it might as this new status quo evolves.

RE: Furphy
I haven’t heard even one of y’all “fans” offer to marry Furphy so he can get his green card and and be paid

RE: KU Buckets 2024 ESPN Bracket Challenge!
@nuleafjhawk I’ve picked a perfect bracket every single season for years…Every bracket is perfect - like the smile of a child or dewdrops on a flower, each it’s own delicate creation, the vessel of joy and dreams, prayerful fancy and wild yearning for a just and glorious world.

RE: Other bball games
@kjayhawks I’m going with ours, though the repeat is a strong weight toward UConn’s - really want one of those baaaaaaad for Self and the Hawks. That said, I’m super proud of our conference streak. And, weirdly, a down coupla years adds pathos to the whole thing for me. I’m optimistic that the NIL era will settle into something that lets me keep on believin’ we will eventually dominate. (I’ve never pretended to be a totally rational fan!!!)

RE: New NIL tournament for next year
@rockchalkjayhawk Very interesting. Thx for this. I had not thought about equity implications of NIL at all.
-
RE: Who would you keep for next year?
Like, I don’t merely want the Hawks to win it all; I want KJ and Juan to win it all, lol.
-
RE: Who would you keep for next year?
I respect y’all who are down on KJ and Juan and I understand why you’d like to see better talent in those starting slots. That said, a much higher consideration for me is just how much I’ve grown to know and like them both. I mean, as college ball becomes an annual revolving door I really cherish the guys who stay and develop. It’s waaaaay more fun for me to root for those guys than strange new faces. I’m more invested in the vicissitudes of the season. It’s more fun to be a fan. So Juan and KJ are tip tier keepers on my wish list, moreso even than Hunter and Furphy.

No fear, the future is wide open, playing with freedom thread
I’m shifting my attention to a reduced-personnel, nothing to lose Big 12 Tournament in which Bill Self gets to be creative with subpar (though still considerable) talent and a few guys who will figure prominently in the next few seasons. I want see development and improv and tenacity and a hell of a fun time!

RE: Other bball games
It helps us (maybe a little?) that Houston’s in a tough fight tonight and then has to travel home before we see them on Saturday.
-
RE: Bringing out the Reds game chat
I’m optimistic about The Marko’s impact next year.
-
RE: Bringing out the Reds game chat
@DanR I worry about his bball IQ. I mean, it’s potentially high, but so far, ain’t seen it.
-
RE: Bringing out the Reds game chat
@kjayhawks Yeah, agreed. Marko’s coming on. But at this point he can’t run the O.
-
RE: Bringing out the Reds game chat
We don’t need a new point guard. We need a backup point guard.
-
RE: Bringing out the Reds game chat
Good news: the bench is contributing tonight.
-
RE: Beat Silo Tech! Lets save this season
I remember that game - I was about 12 or so. Saw it on TV with a super-pumped KSU family. Thinking back it was a pretty formative sports experience for me.
-
RE: Other bball games
@bskeet And all a game’s total officiating stats could be aggregated into an index or coefficient so you could compare across games, seasons, teams, venues… I’d love to have that reported in box scores, etc Good idea!
-
RE: KU vs Tech chat
It’s wild how I continue to believe until basically the very end. I suppose it’s a habit from watching the Chiefs.
-
RE: KU vs Octagon of Tang Doom Game Chat.
Not to mention that that tournament-like two day turnaround gets us every time. Doesn’t bode well for Madness weekends.
-
RE: The Furph
I did a scientific analysis on today’s game and I have determined that Johnny Furphy is very good at basketball.
-
RE: KU vs Bryce Thompsons Super Bowl Chat
@wissox I was just beling silly, lol - thought it was too preposterous to be taken seriously. I’ll rescind my application for assistant coach now.
-
RE: KU vs Bryce Thompsons Super Bowl Chat
3D chess: El Marko starts from here on and Kev comes off the bench!
We’d have balance like last night and plenty of bench scoring/spark!
-
RE: KU vs No More Huggy Bear Game Chat
Bill looks like his health has improved since that Fentanyl commercial
-
RE: KU vs No More Huggy Bear Game Chat
Impressively athletic shot by Timberlake
-
RE: KU vs TCU game chat
Why doesn’t the tech exist to sync the radio broadcast with the streaming game? Seems like it oughta be possible.
-
RE: KU vs Roos game chat
On Furphy:
“This Irish name formerly O’Foirbhilhe in the Gaelic, is a nickname and translates as ‘the descendant of the perfect one’, the clan originating in County Tyrone. … Up to the 1950’s ‘Furphies’ were found all over Ireland being horse drawn ‘water carts’ manufactured by Joseph Furphy, these being in effect mobile meeting places, a place of gossip. Apparently in Australia to ‘furphy’ is to gossip or spread rumour!”
-
RE: Bill Self for COY
@benshawks08 Indeed. I do spend quite a bit of time in this here echo chamber!
-
RE: Bill Self for COY
Ya know…here’s another thing, not a measurable COY metric but worth a lot: he seems to be a pretty kind, level-headed guy. Sure fans of other blue bloods or rivals find plenty of reasons to hate him, but as far as I can tell he doesn’t generate nearly the level of abject disdain folks like Coach K and Cal and Pitino seem to inspire.
-
RE: What was that? "MOJO TRANSFER!"
@cragarhawk Agreed, but it’s a very short list of GOAT candidates, maybe just BS and JW, at least it looks that way to me.
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
Just askin’: why did self sit Jalen just as he might a been getting started?
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
Wilson for 12 more + bench for 10 more + 8-10 minutes of superD = Jayhawks win by 12
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
@cragarhawk I half expect us to come out in total lockdown mode at the start of the half - passing lane and switch adjustments like against Baylor - and blow this thing open.
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
Fun fact: we shot 100% from the line in the first half.
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
Kev playing with real joy
-
RE: Dajuan Harris Cooks Lizards In Fort Worth Game Thread
Guess it’s gonna be on of those games …lopsided officiating
-
RE: 2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc
I worry that cold shooting is our kryptonite (though we’ve won plenty of games this season despite significant stretches of minutes with a lid on the bucket, and even though we’re a hell of a shooting team). It’s just that cold shooting at the wrong time deflates us - drains our Mojo, as @drgnslayr might say it - and brings out this team’s first-half-Baylor energy, the Dr. Jekyll to our 2nd-half-Baylor Mr. Hyde. Also…the right combination of foul probz has done/could do something similar - Juan and Jalen on the bench for long.
But maybe this is all just sayin’ bad luck is our kryptonite.
-
RE: What was that? "MOJO TRANSFER!"
Just to run with the Mojo Hypothesis, Beddie’s data generally supports what we might expect if Mojo exists: it’s easier to bring and sustain it at home. And the particular quality of Mojo at Allen - let’s call it PhogMojo - apparently surges if the team is down a few at half (rather than down a bunch, say), anyway this is how I’d explain the 100 percent correlation between 1-9 point halftime deficits and wins. Of course there are many other factors that influence it (adjustments, inspirational speeches, etc.) so we’d have to do a game-by-game assessment of whether/how much we can see Mojoshifts in those games. I just bet, though, that we’d find palpable shifts most of the time between both the crowd and team state of mind. So, I wonder if Mojo might be an essential quality or capacity in home court advantage - might explain, that is, the intangible but ultimately measurable tilt in the playingfield.

RE: Chris Beard Arrested
OH man, it’d be fun to hate Kentucky with Beard at the helm.
-
RE: Thoughts on the Baylor Game
Glad to hear ya’ll are feeling optimistic - definitely plenty to be excited about. The injuries have me spooked, though, gotta say.
-
RE: 2023 Coaching Carousel
Man…imagine the high school recruiting landscape with Duke, UNC, and Kentucky all questionable choices for prospective talents. Could be a bonanza for KU - possibly for years to come.
