Over on Facebook there is a group called "Rock Chalk News" and it seems to be some kind of clickbait troll site built to cheapshot Kansas basketball and Bill Self.
I just read where 3 of our players were suspended for lying to Coach Self. It is dated on January 29... tomorrow's news already!
Also pulls Self into lots of current politics. He seems like the last coach on earth who wants to dig a deep hole in politics.
I'm posting this as a warning. And maybe there is something we can do to stop this malicious attack from continuing!
It already has 5800 followers!
I totally understand their hiring practices at Kittyland. They are desperate af!
I could totally be wrong on this... because I'm not a ref nor do I have their rules book.
I see this as a case based on two key factors... the reality for what happened and the outcome, plus the intent of both players.
INTENT OF BOTH PLAYERS: I don't think either player had intent to doing something wrong. Melvin put his hands up as he was running to get inbounds. The Colorado guy wasn't intending to pass it in hitting Melvin's hands, but it just happened. So it seems like neither player deserved a T. Maybe I'm wrong because of a rule somewhere.
REALITY OF OUTCOME: The outcome created a steal for Melvin and a score. That clearly should have been waved off. I can't believe this wasn't reviewed, but maybe they needed to step in and make a call in order for it to be reviewable. Once again, I'm not a ref!
I could be wrong... but it seemed to me that Melvin had his hands outward to defend while he was running to get inbounds and the Colorado guy literally threw the ball into Melvin. I think Melvin was as shocked as anyone that he was hit with the ball.
I haven't been able to verify... can anyone in here shed light on this:
I'm relieved we got this win, but still not feeling any better for our ability to play well on the road. Colorado was horrible... mostly freshmen. We lacked energy... the real reason why we can't play on the road. Unless we see major improvements in road play I see definite losses at TTech, ISU, and Arizona... along with possible losses at KSU, OSU and ASU.
I don't see us winning the B12 tourney, so I see a minimum of 10 losses heading into March. Most likely, more losses.
Concerning the Council play. Yes, he was out of bounds when he blocked the ball. But when you consider that he did not step out of bounds to make the play, but was already out of bounds from finishing the last play, and then his back was turned to the inlet pass... I don't see reason why he should receive a T, but clearly his score to follow should have been disallowed. They could have made the call and gone to the monitor. We caught a huge break.
This is a great look at DP during Baylor:
I kept mentioning how we haven't seen the complete DP. He looked at 100% in this game!
I'm with you on that. Even when he brings it up in a half court set, he moves faster, giving defenses less time to set, plus, when we get him to play aggressive, he's usually pushing by his defender, requiring help defense that creates openings for others.
We haven't moved the ball this well all year! Passes were crisp, and the ball didn't stick. Our spacing was good; timing good; pace good!
We got off to a great start by feeding into the post. We need more of that moving forward! But our bigs have to stay more active like they did in this game!
This was a great game to watch!
Overall, great game! It's amazing how much of a difference it makes by having our guys give another 10% effort. They steamrolled ISU, but for 7 minutes in the second half, we got steamrolled. It's just about giving a bit more effort, that's all.
This was the first game he played in where he didn't have to be the best player. He was a bit cold from the field, but the others stepped up, especially our bench.
What I'd like to see from our guys... they play TURNED UP when Darryn is on the floor! Be a part of the "highlight reel" not just trying to watch it from the front row.
Darryn isn't taking possession of the team. It's not just his team... it's everyone's team! Start playing like it!
And for Christ's sake... when the ball leaves the shooters hand, leave then to go get the rebound! Put your body on a player and seal the boards! It's not friggin' rocket science. I learned how to do this in biddy basketball a million light years ago!
@kjayhawks2.0 said in Nothing to prove... nothing to win.:
@drgnslayr To quote Self and every other coach in America, rebounding is 90% want to and 10% skill.
I agree... but Sampson takes it a step further. His guys are so trained up to rebound they don't even think about it anymore. It's become instinct. And if you watch his team closely... the second the ball leaves the shooter's hands, his guys start a motion towards the goal.
Once it becomes instinct, players stop thinking and let their instincts take over. There is NO HESITATION in their movements! When I see guys like Tiller (and I don't want to pick on a newby) you can almost see his brain calculating before he makes any kind of movement. Poor guy. He will, at some point, learn to play through his instincts instead of his brain.
I'm watching the WVU game... On any given shot on either side of the court, no one crashed the boards. Google and watch Sampson at Houston. He uses these in rebounding drills. I really don't think we have rebounding drills because guys stand there flat footed watching shots go up instead of crashing the boards while the ball is in the air headed towards the goal. I'm more than happy to supply a couple of these to the team if need be.
It's that time again in the year... when I have to mention "chip."
For all of you who have read my preaching for years, you may want to find something better to do.
Statistics show that we play better as a team without DP. That's not fair to DP. His offensive stat numbers are at the top in D1. And his defense and rebounds are substantial, too.
What it points to is how average our team is when guys don't bring 100% effort to games.
If this team, with DP, can bring full effort for 40 minutes a game, we are a Top 10 team. When we don't, we can lose to anyone.
There were times in today's game against WVU I thought we might have learned from our heroic victory against TCU. Then in the second half, we went up by 8, which proved to be the big disaster in the game. At that point, WVU stepped it up a notch, while we didn't. At that point, we stopped getting WVU turnovers, stopped attacking them in the open court, and we reverted to our old ways of losing; not disrupting their game and hoping we can outscore them.
My hope for this team is dwindling. My last bit of hope is after we lose many games and drop off the radar completely, we may then suddenly feel motivated to give what it takes to win. It worked in 2022, after Kentucky kicked our butts in AFH.
This is a team that needs high-octane fuel to be successful! That means, super high energy, all the time! We have the bench to use, especially if we have DP back!
They have to create havoc to be successful. Otherwise, their defense is nothing special at all, and then they are left to try to just outscore our opponents.
SPOILER ALERT: We may have the best athleticism in D1! I definitely put it at the top! We have speed and good size! We should be able to create huge havoc for all teams we face, and if we can keep that high energy going, it will lead to our opponents committing turnovers, taking bad shots and running stifled offense, and will lead to numerous runouts for us!
I like your diagnosis and it makes sense.
I also wonder if he might be battling psychological issues with this. Maybe a little ptsd from an early injury or issue. I don't think it has to be much to cause an over sensitive reaction because on top of it all is this huge payday awaiting him.
I don't think anyone will see the real DP until he plays in the NBA. At that point, he's reached his pinnacle and will be making big cake. I know the big money comes in his second contract, but he's got to get there and he'll have to show what he can do before landing that monster contract.
I don't take any of this personal because I'm a diehard Jayhawk. I'm still grateful we have him.
Going counter to this a little bit. The stats are out and our overall net impact of DP and his PT is a net negative. I think we could all guess this. We do have to realize he hasn't had enough reps to truly fit in as a teammate and guys have to step up and focus on the connection, including DP.
I'm going to extend my thread on Wilt and his accusation that bball players overtrain with weights. Here is a photo of DP. I know photos can be misinterpreted... but look at the quads! I know big quads can come in handy in ball. I used to play one-on-one with KU legend Darnell Valentine. We called him "thunder thighs" back then. Part of what gave Darnell the ability to squash me like an insect was his strong thighs. He could push me around just with his legs... easy peasy! But getting back to DP... I think he has had more than one health issue with his legs. We know he has tightness in his hamstrings... maybe he has tightness in his quads, too. Just look at those beefy quads!
