Saw Vick and doke
-
thoughts: - seeing 1st look really at McCormack - just casual when he was playing the drums- - - -Mercy he is a big boy. Mitch? - - they said and I had no idea, Mitch had 54 blocks last season ? - I knew he block quite a few but didn’t realize he had 54. - -Also he took 16 charges - --doing the dirty work… had to laugh at Coach - -making that comment saying that’s exactly what were looking to see KJ getting a rebound - - -dribbling out and shooting a three. – let the Season Begin. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Self was great doing commentary. Very funny, sees the game well.

Ochai Agbaji.
Yeah he’s good. Team is too deep this year for him to get many minutes but he should be a real factor as early as next season.
-
I’m ticked my ESPN app quit during the intros, I was able to watch the rest. Man I hate the scrimmage, lol it’s the same as most years guys just running around like chickens with their heads cut off. I’m like Self sitting here critic it. Now we have to wait 27 days to play
-
Be hard to keep everybody happy. That’s what worries me.
-
We made it out healthy. Great event all around.

There’s not alot to be gleaned from the short scrimmage. I thought Vick, KJ, and Silvio looked the best. I thought Devon looked very impressive. No way do I see Charlie being a roadblock for him, as I have speculated before. I think Mitch got his 3 ball card pulled last night. Dedric forced several shots, but he put together a real nice shot near the end that hints how good he can be. Quentin had some nice moments, although he missed a bunny. I noticed he races to the basket on every missed shot, so he could be a real nice secondary rebounder. Talented team…sloppy, sloppy team. It’s early…they’ll get better.

Yep. Can’t play 12 guys. And unlike a lot of schools the 11th and 12th guys are 4* recruits.
-
The scrimmage is always rough. Self never has his system installed because they never have practice ahead of time, until the last couple of years. It’s also an event where you don’t want any injuries to occur so even if Self had his system in place, I doubt there would be any defense played on this. It’s just a chance for the players to show off different facets of their game for the crowd.
-
Even the walk ons can shoot
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I liked the fact that Vick calmly sank the first shot of the game…a 3 ball. Leadership…
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 You’d think the returning players wouldn’t forget every set over the summer though. You are right it’s the same every year. Exception being that time JoJo messed around too much and actually got chewed out by Self for his Late Night performance. Gotta be a first.
-
If Bill wanted them running sets that’s what they’d be doing. It’s just a show.
-
@BShark It would be silly to try and run sets, I just don’t like it because its bad basketball lol. I was surprised last night, usually there are more highlight reel lobs and dunks.
-
@kjayhawks yes. I always figure the guys would build chemistry over the summer. Doesn’t always show in the late night setting though. I wouldn’t look for a high low, just some good two man action.
-
@kjayhawks yeah, it’s hard to watch, looking forward to the exhibition on Oct 25th.
@dylans there was a nice two man sequence with Grimes and Dedric passing back and forth that ended in a lay-up.
-
The two teams shot a combined 12/29 (about 41.4%) from 3.
KJ shot 3/4 from 3.
I underestimated Dedric’s ability to rebound. He may be the best rebounder on the team actually.
Grimes and Dedric both had 3 assists. Dedric put the ball on the floor and had a really nice fadeaway jumpshot off of one foot. He’s really good.
Grimes had a really nice bounce pass to Dedric on the baseline.
Mitch led the game with 19 minutes played. McCormack only played 9 minutes and didn’t do much.
Agbaji and Elliot both looked decent.
And I’m not surprised that the red team won.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich Hard to take too much from this tbh. Both Lawsons are very good though. Lots of people sleeping on KJ.
-
Best case scenario is KJ is the real deal and starts over Vick. Vick coming off the bench would really let you know just how deep we are.
-
KJ led either team in points and only played 9 minutes!
But ya, this game didn’t mean anything.

Yeah I think super 6th man is more likely, where he gets just about starter type minutes. When it looked like Doke could leave I thought a starting line-up with the Lawsons at the 4-5 sounded very appealing.
-
Passive/Inconsistent Vick = KJ in starting lineup
Good Vick = Vick in starting lineup
I think Vick will start to begin the season. But if he has a season like his junior year, then he’ll lose his starting spot to KJ probably. It’s nice to have depth this season.
-
@Kcmatt7 Tait thinks Marcus will start over KJ and Vick. I don’t see that. I think Vick has to get heavy minutes for his shooting, but I can’t help but be impressed with the way KJ plays. Nice stroke, hits the boards, plays very smart.

Went back and watched, and Agbaji looks really good. And the more I see KJ, the more I’m thinking we have to get this guy as many minutes as possible. That steal where he jumped the passing lane, and took it home was spectacular. He has a really nice jump shot, and he shoots it quick, but with real good form. 9 minutes…11 points… 3 threes…4 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Put him on the floor with Dedric, Grimes, and Dotson, and you’ve got 4 semi- point guards on the floor ( check out the Dedric to Grimes to Dedric sequence at 2:26. OMG. GREAT TEAMWORK.) Great passers …great drivers …unselfish players looking for their teammates all the time. Teams are simply not going to be able to guard us man to man.
