Darryn Peterson

I was watching a pod cast after the game yesterday . The pod cast is a really good cast has Jeff Goodman , Randolph Childress , and a couple of others. -Goodman hit it right on the head and it's something I've been saying glad to hear others say the same thing. Goodman said that he doesn't think that the decision whether Darryn plays or not , he doesn't think it's Darryn's decision anymore to make. He says he fully believes that it's all Darryn's Mom & Dad and then his Agent that's making the decision NOT Darryn that's making decision - - -BINGO , DING , DING , DING I think that's exactly going on Darryn is not getting any say. Now this is wrong- totally wrong if that's what's happening. Darryn is going on or is what 20 years old now. He should say look this is about MY future , I'm an adult now , my life , and I will make my own decisions --I TOTALLY believe this is what's going on.

That’s the issue that we will likely never get the truth on. Pops could’ve said that’s about as good of a half of basketball you can play, shut it down for the second. I’m more optimistic going forward because we did see him limping noticeably against Colorado. Meaning he forsure had a set back in that game. I would love to see his minutes increase going forward steadily starting tonight. Try and get him 22-25 minutes, I think that could really help this team going forward. We still have to figure out how to play with him consistently. If we can do that and he can play 30-32 minutes come tournament time, we will be a very tough out.

If he plays more than 25 minutes tonight with the verve he played with against BYU, I like our chances.
I expect Coach to rotate more tonight to keep folks a bit more fresh for the end of the game.
I would expect/hope we are in a position to win the game in the final 2 minutes.

I’d have expected him to rotate more guys in up 20 tbh but I think we have our 7 with an emergency 8th in Dawson and that’s what we will see until garbage time or significant foul trouble.
-
But having a guy who can go for 20+ in kohl buried on the bench isn’t the worst thing. He could pop up and surprise someone in a game where he hits a few threes and gets a lob or transition dunk or something. Just feel like we haven’t seen him for quite a while now.

I'm still of the belief DP is making the call on his own minutes. I am starting to think of something else.... hear me out.
I've been studying DP's game. I've never seen a college player so perfect on fundamentals. Those fundamentals weren't a God-given talent. He's worked his butt off his whole life to develop DP. But here is the deal... so has a lot of great players, but none reach the pinnacle of fundamental perfection like DP. That tells me he sits in the Top 1% of OCD perfection. Everything has to be perfect for him. So that same high-strung sensitivity he has for the game is also there assessing his second-by-second health bio during games. When he senses even a tiny tightness, or being tired a bit too much, he decides that puts him at a higher-level of injury risk.
If you study him closely, right now, when he's in a game you can tell how well he feels. Sometimes he gives near 100%, while other times he's not nearly as aggressive. He dials in an EXACT level of aggression.
This is what is driving his minutes. Just my humble opinion.

I think how he was playing against BYU is also why he started feeling it sooner. It's a bit of a double edged sword but I think I'd rather see him for 25-30 minutes at slightly below BYU intensity.
I do still believe this is a quad issue as that tracks the best in terms of the treatment on the bench that we can actually see him receiving. I am obviously not a doctor.

it's like I was hearing different guys today-- -don't think we are hearing the whole thing , there is more to it then cramps. Like they was saying if it was camps you would see them trying to stretch him- - -working on a stationary bike- -drinking water or Gatorade-- -eating a banana- --not just sitting around with heat pads.- -sitting there on the bench no trainers around him- him laughing with team mates or walking off after the game and laughing with another player and no problems.- - - Something isn't right
-
@drgnslayr that's as good as anything else I've heard

@CasterTroy I just read that.

Just to clarify-- I was hoping to get similar intensity over 25+ minutes -- just spread out a bit more between 1st and 2nd half.
I figure (and maybe I'm wrong) that if his minutes are distributed a bit more, he can play a bit more and keep the intensity level up.

Three theories are presented. All good and mostly what's been hashed and re-hashed.
I think there's a fourth theory -- I think there's a possibility this is a deliberate effort to create just enough doubt and concern in the scouts and GM's minds so his handlers can steer franchises that he doesn't want to be a part of away from him.
-
It’s just all so crazy because his intensity vs byu is exactly why you’d think he was a super competitive kid. It’s clear he was up for that game. But then why not finish the deal? My other thought which I don’t really think is a possibility is that self is even a little on board about doing his best to protect him until march. Everyone now sees with an engaged DP and a team gelling around him, this is a legit title contender. So maybe let’s see just enough of that group as we can to make sure it’s still working and then make sure DP stays healthy and opponents have less of a scout on that A team. We all know the big twelve is brutal and many have complained about self wearing guys out with big minutes all year only for them to be too beat down in March to peak. Maybe this is what that looks like? I know 3 strong games of 30+ minutes in the tournament will at least make me happy, 4 I’ll be thrilled, and we all know how great six would feel. If we lose in game two with 21 minutes from darryn, then I will be disappointed.
-
How do they work it when he starts the second half and goes more than 5 minutes or more, How do they call him off? It's a little to pat to say he'll go as close to five minutes and then Bill you will pull him. I can't see Self doing this and living with it.
-
You could be right.
One other thing... look who is watching all our games now... Tyran Stokes.
It says a lot to a guy like him to know that his coach will protect his interests like a real parent!
-
BTW: If we sign Stokes we are easily preseason #1 next year, and actually deserve it this time! It's absolutely SICK to think of next year when you figure out who we might have coming back from this team. So far, I believe Flory returns... along with Bryson, Elmarko... and maybe we have a 50/50 to get Melvin back (by extending his eligibility)!
If all that happens... this will be the most stacked KU team of all times!

The BYU game was a great win for this years team. Thanks but success comes with a price and if we win against TTU it means we will need to win against Zona at least one and Houston. We are here and deserve it. That will mean just three possible games in the conference tourney we don't need to win the tourney and i'm just being a mother hen.
