It was a respectable season and the Hawks were a lot of fun to watch, but that was a tough ending. I’m sad for sure but the guys that had bad games tonight feel a lot worse. At least I don’t sense that Bill puckered as much as we didn’t play well and Oregon did. I also don’t believe we got beat by an inferior team. Oregon is good - good enough to cut down the nets, so I’m gonna let it go while hoping Donna Altwoman stubs his pinky toes in the dark every time he gets up to take a leak in the middle of the night.

This loss was about a terrific turnaround after half time on the defensive end, but our inability to execute offensively.

Lots of things went wrong tonight. One of them was not Bill Self. He was calm and cool. And his team came out fired up after half, and everything went right except the ball going in the hoop.
Again, this is much, much different than some of the NCAA tourney losses we’ve seen.

I agree it isn’t Stanford - although I might disagree a bit that there isn’t at least some similarity to Villanova - namely that we just couldn’t score - and that a key player just came up empty at a critical time.
While I also agree that Self did a good job with this team - adapting to the personnel rather than rigidly adhering to his system when he clearly didn’t have the right personnel to execute it, there is something going on that I can’t pinpoint. At the end of the day, the guy at the top has to be accountable for coming up short of expectations in the tournament. I think we’ve only finished above our expected result based on seed once during the Self era - in 2012.
There is at least some disconnect between regular season and postseason results. There is just too long a track record now to conclude otherwise. 13th straight conference title, 31 wins, probable NPOY - lots to be thankful for. But falling short of the FF yet again - as a number 1 seed - after dominating the first 3 games - in KC. Extraordinarily disappointing…

The most interesting thing to me about this loss was the matchup zone that gave us fits. A typical Bill Self high low offense with a solid 4 kills that zone. Short corner shots, high low passes, etc. We’ve become a pick and roll, spread O this season and its great when the shots are falling and it’s worked great with the personnel. However it was a bad mismatch with the matchup zone when 3s aren’t falling.

@BigBad Thats why I want Bill to have long, defensive teams and mix it up. Its worked well for Jay Wright and Dana Altman.

Probably should just call coach at the beginning of the season and let him know the team is special by that logic. Don’t worry about tweaking anything or adjusting or trying to get better… They’re special come on. Doesn’t work that way. Bill adjusted alot of things to make them as good as they were. The goal is to get better by a small percentage everyday in order to get alot better by the end of the season. For the most part that happened. But we quite honestly played December or January defense tonight in late March for a half. And played tight and hurried on offense for an entire game. Some ppl feel like that is a pattern. Those that don’t… that’s your choice. What I see or say simply doesn’t require your agreement. Hope we do better next time. The end

I wouldn’t trade Mason or Graham for anybody. I could say some more things but I won’t as I’m already on thin ice.

@BigBad it’s crazy and I would’ve never bet on it. But Bragg was so lackluster this year. I nearly forgot about the idea I had that he would be a huge part of this teams success. He made himself nearly forgettable. Crazy

@DoubleDD Dont get me wrong - I love Frank and Devonte but added length would really help them. Think about how difficult Kentucky in 2015 was. That is what I want to see.

Had 4 RB’s by our bigs.
Bragg didn’t see the floor. But we were seeing extreme pressure inside and Bragg doesn’t finish through contact.
LL ended up with 9 points but only 3 RB’s. Coleby got 1 in 4 minutes

Easiest way I’ve found to not be offended is not to really give a sh!T what anyone says. And not need you’re opinion validated. Also being Irish helps. I have those going for me. Very difficult to nearly impossible to offend me. It’s rather nice

After cool down I re watched some of the game. To be honest we didn’t play hard in the first half (outside of BIFM). We played hard the 15 final minutes, we have lived that way for too long all season. It bit our butts against TCU and today. I’ve been saying all year we have to outscore our opponents. Some it was us missing shots but some of it was Oregon playing good defense too. If it was just shooting they wouldn’t have dominated every single stat in the game. I think the point it was over was when we had a chance down 6 and JJ tipped the board over Frank. If that is a rebound and we didn’t just miss 5 fts we had a chance right there. I honestly feel like I did in 02 and 03, maybe a bit worse because of not making the FF. But we should have had back to back titles those years and this year with last year. I don’t get why we tried so hard to get LL the ball. After hook wasn’t falling why keep feeding it to him, same as Perry last year. I’m not putting it all on coach but whether you want to admit it or not he’s now 2-8 as coach in the Elite 8 and I think he’s had the better team all but one time. You can say it aint so but numbers don’t lie and looking back Davidson very easily could’ve beaten us then as well as UNC in 2012. Self is about 4 plays away from being 0-10 in that round, Now that doesn’t mean we should fire him to the guys that put words in everyones mouths but maybe he needs to change the way he does stuff in that round. Matt Tait claimed Self was as tight as he’d ever seen last year, players take after their coaches most the time.

@kjayhawks thanks for the analysis. I agree with everything you said. If Self keeps this up, people will be talking and there will be pressure on him. I honestly wonder how much he analyses tournament losses and thinks about what he needs to do better, like recruit different players, strategy, defensive tactics, etc. He has, for a lack of a better term, “wasted” too many top teams without getting a final four. 07, 10, 11, 13, 16 and now this year. Oregon was not tight - they were the aggressor and played to win. Our guys did not. Self needs to figure this out.
