A close loss to a good Creighton team. They beat a Murray State team that was in the tournament last year.
-
Small team, and the biggish guys they have don’t play much. Not good for them against KU.
-
Just a quick comment… the Sporting KC plays in Kansas City, KANSAS…
-
@wrwlumpy we just watched planes trains and auto… At thanksgiving. Most family members fav part is when Eddie says you are bleeped at the airport car rental place.
-
Team shoots a lot of 3’s, and well. They don’t rebound at all so that’s a plus for us.
The close loss to Creighton leads me to believe they are at least okay.
Their 2nd leading scorer and former WAC POY Martez Harrison is suspended indefinitely which really hurts them against KU.
Boyd, Newbill & Ross cannot be left open.
I’m sure this will be a close game early as we lose guys on the perimeter who make shots. Self calls a T, rallies the guys with his red face and we run away by 20 or so in the end.

@Crimsonorblue22 Those aren’t pillows!

Great job on my beloved KC.
Awesome to learn Peter Gunn was a Roo.
Still love the apparently intentional irony and black humor of placing the Federal Reserve building at the opposite end of the WWI Memorial!!! It creates a monumental reminder that WWI and the Fed went hand in glove. Fed started 1913. WWI started 1914.

@wrwlumpy Did you work for the Denver Post also?
Well done as always!

@dylans My father was Editor of the Joplin Globe and my son went to MU for Journalism, I was a Debate Coach and Theatre Director.

UMKC has been doing pretty well this season. The Green Bay loss is a bit shaky, but Creighton and South Dakota State are probably tournament teams. Not having Harrison is going to hurt them because they needed him to go up against Frank (would have been a really fun matchup).
Nonetheless, UMKC could be a tournament team this year if they can get Harrison back. Their struggle has always been that they haven’t done a great job at landing local talent. To be a successful city program, you have to land in town talent. Just ask DePaul, Temple, St. John’s, Memphis, Cincinnati, etc. You have to land the in town guys or you are sunk. That’s always been the hurdle that UMKC has not cleared, which is why they have never been more than a middling low or mid major team.

Because of the problems at Mizzou, St. Louis with their new Big 12 Coach is getting all the big name recruits. Maybe the Western outlook could get some to KC.
-
Tony Dumas…Wasn’t he a pal of B Rush? Vaguely, I recall that they played offseason streetball together. Tony might have spent summer time in Lawrence scrimmaging with our '08 guys? (Speaking of Rush, I grin every time I think of him. Hasn’t BIll Self done a masterful job of handling some really talented but colorful lulus?)
-
What is the spines of books building? And what is the structure with the white ‘layered’ roof? I’ve not been to KC since my KU days.
-
@wissox “shell” building is the Kaufmann Center for performing Arts
Books are on the parking garage to the downtown library.
-
@DanR didn’t the book building just win some award?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I don’t know of any recent awards. It was completed in 2004 (according to the library website), so it’s been around for awhile. Pretty cool idea, IMO. I about wrecked my car the first time I drove by it after moving back to the area.

@wrwlumpy Tony Dumas & Cousin Ron were both interns in the summer at a business owned by our friend when they played for Lee Hunt at UMKC in the early nineties. Ron had pics of his girlfriend, Mother & dog on his desk & Dumas had pics of himself … but he was a 1st round pick of the Mavs & played 3-4 yrs in the NBA then maybe a dozen more in Europe after that. If Tony hits his 3 at the end of the Cincy game, they beat Huggie & Kenyon Martin at Municipal that year. Think they won 21-22 games that year & really would have been a solid NCAA tournament team. Those were great years for my boys & I. got to meet a lot of neat people, many active former pro & college athletes, agents, coaches, broadcasters, even politicians. Even had a cocktail with Dickey V, Mayor Berkley, & Sam Lacey at the Midland one occasion. We made many special events, roadtrips, & almost every home game at Municipal for 3 years. When the guys would get to come out to the house, they’d stand at the curb & drain 28 foot 3’s like it was nothin. One player from Columbia (South America) was doing his thesis on the YMCA & subsequently hooked me into helping launch the Olathe Y’s youth BB program, which turned out to be one of the most fun & gratifying endeavors I ever voluteered for. Yep lump, those were exceptionally great years. I’ll always have a soft spot for Lil’ Rickey Roo (the big one is called Kasey) :: even as dumb as it sounds, & that’s PDD !

The design was copied in some Eastern European Country whose name escapes me…
-
@globaljaybird Jeff Graves brother played on that team. I went to many of their games that year because I thought with Lee Hunt getting the local talent, that this new D1 school was going to be like UAB. I was very upset when that team wasn’t even chosen for the NIT.
-
@globaljaybird Doesn’t sound dumb to me! I mean, our hearts are devoted to a cartoon style mythical bird and no one, NO ONE–ya hear that, Antlers?NO ONE!!!–can say that is dumb…
-
And if I recall… weren’t federal taxes started basically as a war tax that was supposed to be temporary?
-
The real question… who didn’t make their own rendition of “Kansas City?”
