Self's Strategy for Beating Duke

  • Shoot way worse than Dookies from Trey.

    Let them have the referees.

    Foul them more.

Get 3 or 4 of our guys fouled up

Play’em close to even in every other category, except offensive rebounding for the 16 minutes that Ukoka plays.

Landen should only play 16 minutes and just needs to get 1 reeb. Landen, let your line score flat line. You’ve got a sore foot!. You can do it!

Keep the defensive rebounding close…even if possible.

Get 4 more offensive reebs; that’s really crucial. Big Doke can get +4 by himself.

This’ll somehow get us way more FGAs.

Then let Frank score the last 5 possessions.

    WE CAN’T LOSE!

    Coach K got “Selfed!”

Now, not even the winningest coach in NCAA history with the refs on his side in his home time zone can figure out how Self did it!

    Self’s a genius!

  • Of course media will probably be saying Duke was shorthanded so what’s wrong with KU that they couldn’t beat shorthanded Duke more easily. We did have a 51% shooting rate compared to 48% for them. Not sure how we beat them really. But it feels good.

  • @wissox

He must carry a whole bunch of pocket mirrors and hat rabbits everywhere he goes!!! But I still can’t figure where he hides the smoke!

  • I’ve got it!

He hypnotized the team and suggested they were playing in AFH, not the Apple.

He said: AMAZING THINGS HAPPEN IN THIS BUILDING!

  • Oh, and I believe Frank Mason actually IS a hat rabbit!!!

I believe inside the stove pipe hair are two long furry ears and Frank likes carrots!

Frank Mason has become one of KU’s all-time point guards.

THE GUY CAN JUST FLAT OUT PLAY!!!

  • @jaybate-1.0

Big Win, we’ll take it. Makes up for Friday

  • @BeddieKU23

    COPY AND PASTE!!!

  • @jaybate-1.0

It’s always interesting to analyze the game after and see the mirage of things that “go wrong” and still win. The flip-side is it sucks when you don’t win

  • @jaybate-1.0 Agreed. Frank CAN flat out play.- - Mercy if he can hold up minute wise and from the beating he takes, he is going to have a MONSTER YR. - -I mean 30 against Indians- - -and what 21 last night against the beloved Duke Blue Devils? that isn’t exactly Incarerate world or marist.

Question? exactly where DO WE rank Frank number wise on the all time list at point guards? - - I would be willing to say has to be in top 5 doesn’t he? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @BeddieKU23 I thought we would come out of this one & one -What I DODN’T THINK was we would lose to Indiana and beat Duke. - - Thought it would of been the other way around but it’s all good big win - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • We beat Dook, the number 1 team in the country. We shot horribly from the 3, and couldn’t hit a free throw to save our lives. But we rebounded the ball, and played good defense. Tidbits:

    • LL is injured. Hurt. Give him the Siena game off…let him heal up.

    • Devonte is not 100%. Rehydration takes some time. He was used as a decoy the last 5 minutes of the game.

    • We saw flashes of the JJ show, and I have to say…it’s quite a show. I think we have a beast on our hands.

    • Doke is going to make quite an impact on this team down the road this year. The passion he plays with is infectious. 12 boards…nice.

    • Carlton is making a comeback…love the jumper he nailed…love seeing him playing the 5 ( I thot he played well with the small lineup),

The game bodes very well for our future. 15 games from now, we’ll look to this game as a launching pad.

  • Bold strategy, Cotton.

Definitely agree RE: Lucas. Pretty much the rest too. Not sure on Bragg, he still seems like a hot mess atm.

  • @BeddieKU23

Most great battles involve great flaws on both sides that are overcome in the moment by can do individuals that exploit recognized opportunity.

This is why one must have enough talent, but talent is not enough.

You have to have can do individuals in positions where crucial opportunities occur at decisive moments.

    Enough talent gets you there.

But only Can do does it.

This is why someone can become the greatest KU player at a position without making it in the pros. The pros require another, higher level of talent for the CAN do to come into play.

  • @BShark

    Lucas is a tough call.

It’s better for Luke to sit.

But it’s not as clear if that’s best for the team.

  • I think Self could get away with resting him until Stanford (unless he was all healed up before then of course).

  • @KUSTEVE don’t you think we need more out of Bragg ?

He just has not done much but I sense he can and will. Make a few treys, lane opens, CB blossoms. Guard slack and burn. We dominate. Love the feel of this team.

  • @wissox

The media will say what they want anyway and 50% of the time they will be wrong…or 100% in politics. 😎

They might have had 3 players missing but the refs more than made up for that, don’t you think?

Also what are the odds KU would shoot 2-17 from three again. Not high I’d wager.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Oh man, I’ve been trying to avoid being a blame the ref person this year, but last night had me rethinking all of the bad calls when we play Duke.

The politics thing, and I guess I’d include myself on this, yes, 100% wrong.

  • @Fightsongwriter He put up excellent numbers in 16 minutes.

  • @Fightsongwriter I agree - he still does not look like an intricate part of the offense. I still want to see more pick and rolls with him and Frank - maybe we’ll see that Friday. Nice we don’t have any long breaks before the next game.

I also liked how Self had Josh down on the block - scored off it too. Smaller players can’t guard him down there.

  • @jaybate-1.0 If all of them were Seniors, which two point guards would you start?

    JoJo White,

    Mario

    Sherron

    Frank

    Jacque

    Kirk

  • I told you all that the referees would dictate how the game went. Think about it, KU is not and has not been a team that thrives on fouls but look at the stats. KU was whistled for 26 fouls and a Duke for 22 and you can say that is not really a big difference but when you look a the free throws it is 9-19 for KU and 21-30 for Duke.

While the difference on the number of fouls was not big the difference on the type of foul called was much larger and Duke got 12 more points at the line than KU…if KU shoots 100% from the line still does not have as many points as Duke from the line.

I was watching the game with friends and it was the running joke that every time they called a foul on Duke a BS foul against KU would follow and most every time it did; even Bilas could not justify several of them and he has been a long time advocate of changing the rules to further “sissify” the game as it were. Last night’s refereeing was joke that made the game unwatchable and would not allow either team to establish any kind of tempo, and when KU did and took a large lead they quickly put an end to that. As usual, Coach Rat Face was getting on the refs faces from the get go and it worked. As good a coach as he is, I hate when he resorts to that type of tactics; I just don’t like him much.

I posted before that KU needed to be 15 points ahead with 3 minutes so as not get the game given to Duke by the refs…well it was closer than that and it took a magnificent shot from Mason to win the game.

  • @wrwlumpy

I’m not jaybate but Rio and Kirk.

  • @wrwlumpy That’s like asking which of your children you love the most!

  • @tundrahok I remember on the David Letterman show when they broadcast from his mother’s house in Indiana, they asked her, “Do you have a favorite child?” She answered, “Oh no, but I do have a least favorite.”

  • @wrwlumpy I feel like Mario shouldn’t be on that list as A: he didn’t play at KU as a senior so we don’t really have a solid idea of what that would have been, and B: he was never really the point guard. He was the point guard like Graham is our point guard now. Yeah he sometimes brought the ball up, but even more than Graham (who is the primary handler when Mason is on the bench) Mario always had RusRob or Collins out there with him.

I would replace him with Aaron Miles as he would be one of my picks. Second would be tough. I didn’t see JoJo White enough with my own eyes to get a feel for him (I know I could research it) so he is out by default. I would probably go with Frank or Jacque. If I had to pick now, it might be Frank because I’m pretty confident he will triple double at some point this season and he is just so much fun to watch!

  • @benshawks08

Rio is an honarary SR for winning a 'ship iyam.

  • @BShark I get that. And the more I think about it, the more I might put him in my top 2. He got so many extra possessions with his steals, and I remember saying to whomever would listen during the multiple games, “Don’t worry. Mario won’t let us lose.”

  • @jaybate-1.0 RIght!? Here I was thinking pre game that Self couldnt out small ball the small baller Coach K. But he did it. Should have known. Umm, Coach Self better get into the Hall before too much longer. I wanna see that live!

  • @jayballer54 Frank is easily as good or better than Sherron, who is absolutely top 5 at KU.

  • @wrwlumpy

Jojo and Mario/Kirk to start, Mario if opponent is 6-3 or under. Kirk if the opponent is 6-4 or over.

Darnell Valentine and Sherron/Frank as second team. Sherron if it XTREME Muscle, Frank for the rest.

Jacque was a great ball handler, but all the above could handle good enough AND score a ton.

Might have to bump one of Sherron, or frank, if BenMac were in the mix.

  • @Lulufulu

    Hell yeah!

  • @JayHawkFanToo

    Great take.

  • @Lulufulu said:

    Totally agree.

Frank, as a senior, is clearly on another level than other players - partly because there isn’t as much experience on the floor. He isn’t the tallest guard, or the biggest and not the most gifted. But heart and experience goes to Frank.

Frank can manufacture points like few others. He looked like this in South Korea and now we see it in NCAA. The game is slow for him now and he can simply will a basket.

If we were to lay out a list of 5 keys to KU winning an NC this year, “A Healthy Frank Mason” might be the top of that list.

  • @jaybate-1.0 Ben Mac had a killer season for KU his second year. I dont think we can put him on this list tho cuz all the others stayed and affected KU for longer than the 4 years they were here. Not a knock on Ben Mac, love the kid, has a sweet shot, was great at KU. But he’s not worthy imo

  • @JayHawkFanToo

I hate the fact that the officiating is such that we cannot reflect on a game – even relish in a win – without discussing the refs.

    But it’s undeniable.

There is simply too much judgement and latitude bestowed within the refs today. Leagues (NCAA, NBA and NFL) allow this and maybe even foster it as it can be an equalizer that creates more exciting games. (Warriors vs Cavaliers anyone? Patriots, Panthers and Seahawks?) To the viewer – the consumer of these products – it appears that refs influence the game to the point of overt manipulation.

For the love of the game, they have to STOP IT.

    How? I’m not sure.

I suspect that technology could play a role to remove human errors and subjectivity.

Instant replay has helped with baseball, and may play a niche role in Basketball and Football, but is not a the solution. Part of what makes these games fun is the fast pace. Increasing replay would ruin the flow and lengthen the games far too much.

More likely, some sort of system can cross-reference a database of plays and quickly compares the precedent for a call. Imagine if, after a call like the hustle play that Josh Jackson made trying to steal the ball, there was a way to look at 20 similar plays – taking into account position of players, etc – and could quickly determine that this play results in a “Jump Ball” call 80% of the time, “no call” 10% of the time, foul on the player in position A 7% of the time and foul on player in position B 3% of the time.

This kind of analysis, on a portfolio of plays during a game, could be used to ‘grade’ the refs and keep them in check – essentially normalizing the way they call the game.

This kind of system would allow anyone to review the calls from a given ref and tell whether they were making irregular calls or standard calls. That would eliminate the speculation of fans and probably eliminate the refs that speculate.

  • @wrwlumpy

I am not Jaybate either but I should point out that if you are talking about PGs only, Mario played SG and not PG in his last season at KU (RussRob was the PG) and Hinrich also played SG in his Junior and Senior years (Aaron Miles was the PG). The both played PG in the NBA.

As far as a PG-SG combination, I would have to go with JoJo and Kirk; however, if Mason continues playing like he has this season, he would move to the top,

  • @bskeet

The best refereeing job is when no one talks about the refs after the game. When there is a lot of talk about the refereeing, it is a clear indication that they did a poor job.

  • @JayHawkFanToo True.

When was the last time that happened? (that’s a rhetorical question…)

  • @bskeet

It has been known to happen from time to time although it is becoming rarer. It appears the refs have decided they want to be the stars instead of the player…I guess the bought into the old Hollywood adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity.😉
