Checking in on KU volleyball
-
Yep, the marching band is playing at the Band Festival and they go in at 8:30 PM. The Horejsi Family Athletics Center holds only 1,300 people; I bet many area High Schools have bigger gyms. It would surprise me if this game didn’t’ draw 6,000-8,000 fans at AFH
-
@JayHawkFanToo which is not full, that’s the reason.
-
I would think there is another gym in Lawrence that holds more than 1,300 and less than 16,000…lots of people that wanted to see the team will not be able and guess what…it is on ESPN3 which is blocked to so many fans. One more reason to hate %$#&^$% Zenger…
-
@JayHawkFanToo Yea not worth risking the home court advantage for more money.
That is like saying we should have moved the UK vs KU game to Sprint center because it could have held more people.
You don’t take away your home court advantage. That comfort level is worth every penny.
-
With as much enthusiasm as thee is in Lawrence about the KU volleyball team, I believe the could have had substantial crowd at AFH like they have had before… 8 or 10 thousand fans at AFH can be pretty loud.
-
@JayHawkFanToo if you haven’t watched a game, either on tv or in person, you just don’t get it! The gals love their home gym.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Yea I have to agree with @Crimsonorblue22. I was fortunate enough to have to work some of the games last year. Literally nobody shops during the sets so I got paid to watch. Atmosphere in that gym is insanely electric. It isn’t about the loudness though. It is about comfort. That is where those girls practice every day. They have the lighting and depth perception ingrained in their brains.
You don’t give that up for anything.
-
My point is not about the comfort their home court brings; of course it does. My point is that as they move up the ranks, they need to have a bigger audience. Limiting the audience to 1,300 fans is not the best way to get exposure. I, for one, would have loved to see them but since it is sold out and tickets can be bought only through resale outlets, the cost is outrageously high, particularly when thanks to $^&&^%^# Zenger, the game is blacked out on ESPN3 for all of Kansas and the KC Metro area.
This is by no means the same as the men’s basketball team playing at the Sprint Center, that is located in a different state, where KU has no control over the gate and makes a lot less money than playing at home and both games have full TV exposure. AFH is essentially next door and under full control of the Athletic Department and the gate would be considerably higher. Sometimes you have to look at the big picture…just sayin’…
-
@JayHawkFanToo I think you just need to go to a game to see.
Since the remodel in 2009 we have progressively gotten better. The girls LOVE LOVE LOVE playing there. Our recruiting lately has been off the charts. Why go mess that up? Especially because volleyball has a strange dynamic. It is probably more of a family atmosphere within the team than any other sport. Just the way it is. So I think the intimacy of Horejsi actually is beneficial.
You’re showing a recruit around and you take them into this tiny gym pregame. And they probably aren’t expecting much after that. If we are recruiting them, they have been to some insane facilities, they’ve seen the best of the best. So,they sit in their “reserved” seat that they probably don’t think they even needed reserved. I mean if you only have a stadium that large, apparently nobody cares. Then about a fourt five minutes before the game, the masses start pouring in. Before she knows it, the band is playing, and there is a strange buzz. 5 minutes before the game all of the seats are full with a line of students outside waiting and praying to get squeezed in somewhere. The crowd is chanting as the girls run onto the floor. The first serve goes, we score and the crowd lets out a cheer far louder than one you would expect from 1500 people, echoing through Allen Fieldhouse. One of those cheers that gives you goosebumps all over. The rest of the game you see nothing but perfect execution from a top 5 team in the country. A very calm coach that doesn’t get riled up in the moment. Every girl on the team has so much joy on their faces, like they truly love being a Jayhawk volleyball player. And you think, I want to be apart of this. This right here is something special.
-
I am not advocating moving the team permanently to AFH but perhaps for some unique, high profile games such as this game? It’s all good, I hope the Lady Hawks kick some Texas butt on Saturday.
-
I’m disappointed that Fox sports or ESPN U didn’t pick up this game, I guess its Saturday and football time but still ESPN 3 is blacked out here. Just hope we can get Texas we have finished second to them 4 years in a row now. I want a B12 title in something other than basketball.
-
@kjayhawks can you get the longhorn network?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 unfortunately no
-
@kjayhawks you can download an app on your computer that changes your perceived location and get ESPN 3 on that. The one I have on my computer is called Hola!
-
Isn’t a 5-6K court in the works for the volleyball team?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I get the longhorn network it’s not on the longhorn network.
-
@jayballer54 oh, I don’t get it anyway.
-
I went three years cussing out our Athletic Director. I gave in to TWC since they now have no contracts. I was able to do it because the DTV contract was over. It is going to be shown Saturday night on TWC. People are paying scalper prices.
-
My contract with Consolidated expires next week and I have been looking at AT&T, Comcast, TWC and Google and none offers what I get from Consolidated for a comparable price. TWC would provide less and cost 50% more; thanks but no thanks…I will go on hating %$#@#%^^ Zenger.
-
@JayHawkFanToo can’t stand zenger, I would still get twc, I can’t miss games. I love the pre and post game interviews too, add vb and jayhawk insider, I get my money’s worth.
-
It would cost me over $700 per year extra to switch to TWC and get less product and crappy service and KU does not benefit from it at all. For that much money I can get tickets to the 6 games that will be blacked out.
-
@JayHawkFanToo just saying I’d do it.
-
I am getting more pragmatic as I get older. lOL.
-
@JayHawkFanToo StubHub has a pair of $780 tickets for the 1st row behind the bench for the OSU game in January… Sounds like a solid investment!
-
I don’t think so.
-
@dylans That’s the sad thing to me how high priced the tickets are getting even nose bleed or GA are high against no one. Just hoping my connections come thru this year . 2 years ago we sat in row 6 right behind the KU bench for the TCU game, last year we sat on the other side row 1o mid court for the Holy Cross game. I have in laws whos parents have been boosters for years and get season tickets every year and give me great deals for their seats or people they know not going. Paid $100 for 4 seats in the row 10 LY they was going for $450 a seat on stub hub even for Holy cross on a Wednesday.
-
-

@jayballer54 KU fb, back to reality
-
Good to see the KU men’s bb team there!️
-
@Crimsonorblue22 ya that was pretty sad, I turned it off I’m sorry. The 1st maybe 1 1/2 quarters weren’t bad. I dunno I still believe in the defense - -I think Clint has got him a group - - maybe didn’t look like it for the entire game tonight but Oklahoma doing that to about everyone in the Big 12 - - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I watched about 2.5 quarters and we had a chance to be in it at half time. But as usual the offense stopped moving the ball after period 1 and left the defense out to dry and also let up a pick 6. I thought maybe we could move the ball against them, their defense ranks 8th in the B12. But lets be real especially looking at how things unfolded in the B12 today OU is the best team IMO hands down, I bet they run the table and if they would’ve played to their ability early on in the season would be in the conversation for the playoff.
-
KU Football smh.
