Oklahoma vs Kansas Chat
-
@RockChalkinTexas CR 75th on the rocks?
-
@brooksmd never had the fancy stuff. Plain ol Crown will do thank you very much.
-
It was my rally cap I put on at the start of 3rd OT that did the trick I’ll have you know.
-
I don’t do the game chat thing - I’m not coordinated enough to watch and type at the same time. But I just wanted to chime in and say this:
I’m kind of a KU fan. For about the last 52 years. I’ve taped (yes, taped) games for years, now I DVR them. I’ve listened to Max and Bob on the radio when I lived far, far away and there was no such thing as cable TV, ESPN, the Internet or any other form of media except to listen to the radio. I’ve watched us win two National Championships (on TV, I’m not rich) and I have NEVER been as emotional about a game as I was tonight. When the game was over I literally had tears streaming down my face. I don’t really even know why. But it was one hell of a game and I have incredible respect for Buddy Hield. The guy is phenomenal and he seems to be a humble, level-headed kid. Wish he was a Jayhawk.
-
@bskeet SVP interviewed him after our highlights and he was very classy and had a lot of respect for the fans and AFH. Stand up guy.
-
Interesting thinking about losses I’ve seen in AFH… With the help of Google I’ve seen 3. Long Beach State and Oklahoma in 1992-3. Temple in 1993-4

My post game thoughts:
Bill Self likes to play with matches, not match-ups, but fire.
He has a deep team, they have a shallow team: Bill shortens his bench and rides the horses he has out there till they nearly collapse and die
He plays a 2-ball game late against a 3 point shooting juggernaut. (maybe counting on their tired legs)
Last year the 3 ball is golden for us and we get “fools gold”. This year, two pg guard offense is tearing up the assist to TO ratio stats and he asks them to get a little wilder with the ball…and they do (at least for a half-ended up with 14 TO’s so we did tighten it back up later in the game)
Also, I’m not sure if our Assistant Coaches have any balls to stand up to Self and talk some sense to him, or…what?
So Bill is a gambling man, not necessarily do-anything-to-win, but gamble in the way that an older brother teases a little brother to the point of total rage…stiff arming him to keep the windmill punches from connecting, hoping that little brother doesn’t pick up something deadly and in rage, throw, shoot, or lauch a fatal missle at him.
Our offense got stale late and reverted to “I don’t know what to call it” but we kept hitting some shots, and also seeing for the most part our back to the basket game get stuffed back in our faces and our drive to the hole against a set defense as well. But the players hit enough shots to win, enough rebounds to win.
Definitely take the win, excited, but like a coach looks for coachable points after a win as well as a loss, I’m interested what Coach takes away from his performance in this game.

instant classic, just saw they are replaying the game on espnu at 2am
-
Watched the game with friends and even one of them who is a big MU fan indicated that is was one of the worse refereed games he had seen, The foul call on Mason at the end of the first half was egregiously bad; Mason would have had a clear path to the basket and KU would have led at the half by 1 or 2, instead KU was give n T and OU led by 4…that is a big swing…and that was not even the worst call…oh well…
I read somewhere that Higgins was the ref in at least 5 of the previous 9 loses at AFH…makes you go hhhhmm…
-
@JayHawkFanToo Yes, the officiating was sickening. Not surprised about Higgins - he has earned a reputation as being a dip.
-
@Jayrawks1 Great. I can get the last 8 sec I missed when tivo shutoff.
-
@JayHawkFanToo Not even just AFH. He reffed the MSU game this year, and at least 80% of KU’s losses the past 2+ years. Whenever I hear Higgins is doing a KU game, I assume KU is going to have several really bad calls against them that game and today was no different.
-
I wonder if KU can file a complain and quietly request that he does not officiate any KU games in the future…you would think that KU has enough clout to at least get him reprimanded.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 There seems to be a trend.
-
Can’t believe all the coverage of the game on SportsCenter tonite. Must’ve been a slow nite on the east coast.
-
@brooksmd No, this coverage is well deserved by both teams.
-
Geez, it’s been a year since Stuart Scott died. ESPN lost a great guy that day.
-
@Bwag probably you guys don’t want to hear this, but I wouldn’t have subbed either. There’s nobody on our bench I would have trusted. Great game, OU is a really seasoned ball club.
-
-
@nuleafjhawk I actually went into another room and just watched most of the second half.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Before you ask, POC = Piece Of Cake
-
@brooksmd my youngest in Chicago asked me if this topped the mizzou game and I said no, but really close.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 When you be back home?
-
To paraphrase the late Jerry Tarkanian…
The refs were so upset they missed the call when the OU player whacked Mason on the head at the end or regulation that they decide to call a foul on Lucas instead…just to make themselves feel better
-
@brooksmd headed home tmrw am! Ready to get rio home.
-
@brooksmd I have an xtra ticket for texass game.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Who ya takin’?
-
@brooksmd don’t know! Come on up. Top row, so much fun, super blessed I am! Doesn’t get much better than tonight.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 My nephew might be interested if you don’t find anybody. He lives in Topeka.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 I wanna go! lol
-
Can’t get this video to post any ideas?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 only videos I’ve ever posted were youtube.
-
So the ESPN talking heads make a big deal out of Mason guarding the inbounds too close and not being called. Not much if anything said about Mason’s drive where somebody practically took his head off but the ref’s only thought LL was too rough on the resulting rebound.
-
@brooksmd the refs were awful! I was yelling at them too!

If we’d lost, same take?
There were some times we lost possessions due to being so tired. Granted they were tired too and gave us back some of those, but I think that kept the game closer than it may have needed to be.
-
@Bwag So to sum up what your saying in all of your post is that some of our players are good, but we have a poor coach that makes bad decisions in every game. Didn’t you enjoy even part of this game as a Jayhawk? Is celebration and happiness not in your make up? When we lose a game this year, then you can eloquently wax your superior doom and gloom view and say “See how stupid Bill Self is.” If and when we finally do win a NC, then we will be unbelievably lucky, or Self started listening to you. When a happy moment comes in your life, enjoy it.

-
@Bwag same thing, other than Mari for D at the end. BG and Svi were getting schooled, had to keep our 3 guards and Perry in.
-
@wrwlumpy Not at all. I appreciate the adjustments that have been made. I’m celebrating, really I am. I know I’m not a coach and wouldn’t try to go X & O’s with anyone on this site, let alone a Hall of Fame coach. I’ve never called Coach Self stupid - your word - not mine. I’m hoping we don’t lose another game all year. I think we have the horses that we could dominate. And lastly, I appreciate the give and take on the site.
It’s just observation and if one or two shots don’t go for us, we’d be shaking our heads without a smile on our faces, and saying, “It was a great game though”. Check out @jessenewell’s Tweet: https://twitter.com/jessenewell/status/684262745710067712
Worst performance in last 7 games at a PPP look. That is what I saw with my eyes and what I meant by “stale”.
Believe me, I’m enjoying the ride. I come here to read, learn, and post my observations. Arm chair QB like most of the rest of the sporting world does.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Jamari played very strong.
-
@Bwag I’m willing him to find some success, he certainly gives his all!
-
@Bwag LIke someone else tweeted, don’t suppose that 15 minutes of OT had something to do with the PPP?
-
@brooksmd PPP?
-
Points Per Possession (PPP)
Points per possession is calculated based off the following formula and is how we determine the number of possessions based on the data we have. The formula used is points scored divided by (FGA - OREBs) + TO + (Y * FTA), where FGA = field goal attempts, OREB = offensive rebounds, TO = turnovers, Y = .44, and FTA = free throw attempts.
What is Y? In the ideal situation, if every trip to the line resulted in two free throws, then we could multiply free throws by .5. However, technical fouls, “and one” situations, missing the front end of a 1 and 1, and shooting 3 shots resulting from a 3-point attempt all deviate from the ideal situation. Research has shown that .44 is most accurate number we can use for Y.
-
@brooksmd Certainly possible but only makes my point, we left some horses in the barn and potentially (!) made the game closer than it needed to be. That is my only point.
Certainly it’s Self’s team to win or lose and play it how he wants and thinks best. I’m 0-0 in my coaching.
-
@Bwag The only horse that should’ve seen more PT was Hunter. Nobody else was impressive enough to be on the floor during crunch time.
-
@brooksmd I can go there to a point, what I can’t put my finger on is if that helps our offensive flow or production more. Personally, I think it does.
Lucas shouldn’t have and wasn’t apparently particularly worn out since his playing time mostly came in the last part of the game.
Where I’m not sure if if some spot substitutions for rest might have helped us at the other positions might have helped with our key folks overall productivity.
