I live in Houston. I have zero desire to drive or be on that campus/eyesore. The fact that it would be easier to see KU games here-zero interest on my part. I am happy to drive to Austin and watch KU vs UT, and may even consider Baylor games in the future.

Why do you even bother with this? There are legislators in Kansas that just about every year try to pass a bill forcing KU and KSU to play WSU…if goes nowhere in Kansas and nobody really give a rat’s a$$ about it. The same is true about the University of Houston and the Big 12.

I certainly hope it is all nonsense and I can dismiss it. But there are so many wacky things going on in this country I guess the constant headlines has me jumpy.

@JayhawkRock78 Wow. I am nearly speechless over this story. Just the power mad idea floated out there like it was nothing…just wow. I lived in Houston for years, and never attended a single Cougar game in any sport- they just aren’t relevant. Even if the idea was from the Board of Regents, the way they simply flaunt power around is astonishing.

@KUSTEVE I’m probably older than you (and everybody else it seems), but I too lived in Houston many millennium ago and they had one sports team that was very relevant - Phi Slamma Jamma. Those dudes were wicked fun to watch!

This sort of thing goes on all the time.
Ultimately, it’s all about money. The Big 12’s original lineup was influenced by politics. The Texas schools that were originally going to join were Texas, A&M, Tech and either SMU or Houston. However, some Baylor alums were powerful within the state government and basically said they would block funding to the state schools if they left the SWC and didn’t take Baylor with them.
Houston would have been in the Big 12 this entire time if not for that move.
When the last round of conference musical chairs was spinning, legislators in North Carolina were discussing ways to make sure that both UNC and NC State were in a power conference.
Kansas legislators were even discussing linking KU and K-State together to make sure KSU wasn’t left out in a doomsday realignment scenario. Oklahoma was doing much the same thing with OU and OSU.
Being in a major conference could be worth $25m or more versus being in a minor conference. There are a lot of people that will wield any power they have because the amount of money out there is worth it.

@justanotherfan After reading your post I checked into the SWC history and learned Houston was Johnny come lately-joining them in the 70’s. I also think their own conference partners must have not valued them much during the next alignment as their were two groups formed, U of H was not part of either and went another direction by themselves. As for TCU, they were playing musical chairs time and time again. They are lucky to end up in the Big 12.
