Naismith list announced...

  • The Naismith 30 list was announced this afternoon. 5 from the B12, but no Jayhawks. Nash, Staten, Gathers, Niang and Hield. Not that surprising, but maybe a little locker room - bulletin board fodder for Perry and even Frank. Interesting to see if whether the all-B12 ends up with the same 5.

  • Frank the Tank. If a Jayhawk isn’t winning, it better be a Badger!!

  • I should say, does a team that has been top 10 all year more or less automatically deserve to have a player? I think some here think so. I’m not so sure. Teams without superstars, but with very competent players like we have may not deserve a nominee, yet are still very good teams.

  • The Wooden List was also released but has only 20 players. Hield, Niang and Staten are the only 3 conference players in that list.

  • @wissoxfan83 I am not convinced it is all about stats. Look at Kentucky. They have the most balanced scoring you could imagine based on the “platoon” system. Towns and Cauley Stein are both on the list. They average 9 points and 6 rebounds each. Those are not incredible numbers. Some of it is just B.S.

  • Why is Tyus Jones on there in front of Mason? He averages 11 points, 3 boards and 5 assists. Mason averages 12 points, 4 boards and 4 assists. Essentially the same numbers.

I think they both got recognition for two reasons.

One, they are both outstanding defensive players, which is part of what makes Kentucky so good.

Two, Kentucky still has a chance to go undefeated, and if they do, you can’t have the player of the year list not include at least a couple guys on a team that dominant.

Not saying either should win (I’d pick Kaminsky now that he’s healthy), but just the fact that Towns and Cauley Stein play for a potentially historic team means that they will get recognition.

Tyus gets all the east coast media love… that’s why.

The guy is definitely gifted and is playing really well for a freshman. I don’t want to take any kudos away from him. But I did answer your question.
