Happy Thanksgiving 2024!

  • When I started typing the title it popped up because those words have been used for topic titles a few times on this group.

Here’s what I’m thankful for acrostically related to the Jayhawks. There’s way more important things in my life but our Hawks are a great diversion.

James Naismith. He’s partially ours and for goodness sakes, we wouldn’t even know each other without him.

Allen Field House Before the internet days when I attended we all knew it was the best in the nation even if there was no ‘best…’ lists floating around causing arguments on the www.

Youth. I truly enjoy watching our fans behind the basket making it such a nightmare place to play for our opponents.

Hinrich, Kirk. Easily one of my favorite Jayhawks of all time. When we recruited him and Nick and Gooden I saw these freshmen just play way above their age and saw the potential to do what they did. If the letter N or C was in this acrostic Nick C would get his shoutout.

Agbaji, Ochai. His first high profile game in the champions classic, we saw the potential. Glad he hung around to become an all time great and win a championship.

Wilt Chamberlain. Now of course I didn’t see him, probably didn’t ever catch a glimpse of him on TV in his last year when all he did as a 36 year old was average 19 rebounds a game along with 14 points, and 4.5 assists. I love looking at his stats and also admire him for what he had to overcome as an African American in this horribly backwards country when he came to Lawrence.

Kansas football. I had a good time going to the games my first year on campus when Mike Norseth, and Willie Pless had them ranked until injuries derailed the season. After the games I’d drive my Vette (chevy chevette) over to pizza shuttle and tear around town for the next 12 hours delivering pizzas which was still the funnest job I’ve had. kubuckets. OK, I’m adding a 2nd K because @approxinfinity is the true GOAT of KU basketball for rescuing us from sudden homelessness for our chatting. I really don’t read KU sports stuff. I get what I need here.

Self, Bill, Brown, Larry, Williams, Roy. To have 3 all timers coaching at the school since I arrived is truly remarkable. Still can’t believe Roy didn’t win one, but fricking UNC distracted him that weekend in 2003 and we lost a game we should have won.

No letters to fit Danny Manning into this but being a senior in 1988 was truly magical. Watching him for my 3 years on campus was watching greatness. Times weren’t crazy yet so we’d show up about 3 hours early and nab seats in the first row behind the basket, about 10 feet from the court. If we ever wanted to storm the court we would’ve been the first ones on the floor!

Also thankful for Mario for making that shot because Bill Self would’ve had the can’t win the big one label big time if he hadn’t done that.

Have a great day ya’ll and see you next time!

  • Nice post. I feel smarter just reading “acrostically”. And I snorted at the Che-Vette reference.

It’s good to be a Jayhawk. Hope y’all Gobble til you wobble today.

  • @StLJhawk Thanks, funny thing is I used acrostically thinking I used it right, but I wasn’t entirely positive, but it sounds like you confirmed I was right!

  • Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! I just feel grateful to still be around… been a tough couple of years. Lost 6 close people and still have a few circling the airport with terminal illnesses. I really feel like we have a “war on cancer.” It’s made me humble and thankful at the same time.

  • 10 or more people, don’t know about everybody, got the flu from our hostess at our 🦃 dinner. Probably 40 there.

  • Happy Thanksgiving! I was fortunate enough to have a couple days with my 87 year old grandma and 90 year old grandpa. Sure I spent like 4 hours in tech support but every minute with them is a blessing.

  • @FarmerJayhawk My parents are your grandparents ages essentially meaning you’re probably more like my kids ages!

  • @wissox 33!

  • @FarmerJayhawk Yeah, my oldest is 32!

  • @wissox my oldest is 42, youngest is 34. My dad will be 89 in February.

  • @nuleafjhawk Everybody’s a little bit different. My dad is 92, mom 88. Thankful for them. Dad has dementia. Hideous disease robbing a brilliant man of his mind.

  • @wissox that’s awful. Best wishes to you all. My grandpa has the opposite issue. He’s sharp as a tack but has advanced macular degeneration so he gets really frustrated when he can process information but he needs someone to read him something or a suite of magnification equipment to read himself.

  • @FarmerJayhawk I can relate as my mom has that.

  • I hope you’re turkey was dry if you didn’t watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles lol

  • I did, tradition, 😥 every dang time! My heart melts easily

  • @Crimsonorblue22 easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

  • @wissox Love that you did this. When I was on the Kansan staff, one of my friends was a copy editor (they write headlines, check spelling and grammar, etc. and often have to make cuts to the copy to make it fit the space). One night, after 1am as we were wrapping the paper, he managed to edit an AP story so that if you read the first letter of every line of the article, there was an acrostic message. I don’t remember what it said, but IIRC, it was the only way you could get certain four-letter words printed in the paper.

It was the sort of thing no one would notice… or so we thought. The Kansan professor either noticed or caught wind and was not as amused.

    Legendary, nonetheless.

  • And on a similarly legendary prank status, I hope everyone has seen this amazing, recently published book on Amazon:

  • @bskeet That’s a great story!! What year was that?

  • @wissox 87-88

  • I have a good Thanksgiving story (I think).

My wife (who is an extraordinary cook) put the turkey in the oven 7:30-ish Thursday morning. At 11:30 she checked and said “hmmm…the turkey is only at 72⁰”. I thought -great, guess I’m buying a new stove. An hour later she checked again and it was 92⁰. My son said "Mom, can I see that thermometer? You see the “C” and “F” ? Try it on “F”.

  • @bskeet Whoa, that’s when I graduated! Great year to be a Jayhawk!
