Crap on Jeff Grimes thread
-
Jeff Grimes, despite making millions of dollars to call plays, lacks the wherewithal to understand that feeding a running back who is averaging 7 yards a carry is more efficient than throwing with a quarterback who is averaging 4 yards a pass (and an interception every 10 passes). This lack of basic sense cost us one game already. Obviously, he will not get fired because of one bad game. But what if he costs us our next couple matchups? Might he get the can?
-
I am hoping he can learn from this one and move on.
Also LL to step in and have more say on critical downs during games.
-
The Season IF they do , It wasn’t Grimes that cost that game, there was A LOT of hands in the pot for that. Devin Neal even mentioned in post game, that we can’t afford to start taking games for granted — that we aren’t there yet, and some guys thought that. - -Grimes might have played a part even though Coach has the final say on Calls - -he doesn’t like the call he can nix it.- - You don’t fire your OC after two games-- - just like you don’t yank JD after two games. The same people that JD was the All Mighty God are now wanting him yanked after two game. Some people are beyond funny. -Come on for Christ sakes the sky isn’t falling. Disappointing-- -YES - -Oh Whoa is me scenario - -UMM NO
-
I don’t think there’s any world in where he’s actually canned. If things keep going poorly I could see Z getting playcalling duties. After all we’d still need a TE Coach
-
Since Lance is ultimately the guy who gets the blame/credit I was wondering what role he has in a situation like that? I mean if it’s my team I’m screaming into the radio ‘I don’t care what Jeff said, run the ball!’. Do head coaches do that?
Just trying to understand what the OC does. Is his IPad telling him in this situation run this play? Does he look at matchups and say this will work? Trying to figure why what seems so obvious to so many fans about that game wasn’t obvious to him? Have media types been critical of his play calling? Anyone have links?
-
Wonder if if it will sell out Friday, wasn’t last time we played there.
-
Do we know for a fact more runs weren’t called and then audibled to pass after getting a read of the defense’s set? They were packing the box so switching to pass was probably technically the right call lots of times even if situationally it was dumb because JD didn’t have it that game. But if you are JD, you can’t be thinking that way. How much license does he get to make adjustments on the fly? Legitimately curious about this.

pretty much what your saying lat I kne is correct. HC always has the right to kill Grimes call, having he last word. He can always say NOPE not running this now – here is what we are running
-
@kjayhawks it was definitely sold out, but there were some no shows for sure
-
@FarmerJayhawk ya Labor Day weekend may have been some of that
-
@kjayhawks oh yeah. And being hot as hell and that area just sucks in general
-
@benshawks08 I think you’re right and it is likely that we had guys in favorable matchups and JD missed. But it was clear early JD didn’t have it and sometimes you just have to run the ball.
You hand the ball off to Devin Neal 3rd and 3 when you have a must-have first down.
As long as JD bounces back this team is still a threat to win the B12. Was definitely more disappointed with JD than play calling probably.
-
@FarmerJayhawk I actually like the area just don’t like the parking lol
-
@Kcmatt7 I was as enthusiastic as anyone about the 2024 KU football season, but after the first two games I can’t see where we’ll finish any better than middle of the pack.
JD’s interceptions weren’t anomalies, they were stupid plays. Everything about that game was stupid. When you average 7 yards per carry…hmm. Run it.
I hope I’m wrong.
-
I honestly was a little disappointed in Grimes media session. He said Illinois disguised their defense better than anyone he had ever seen before. We moved the ball down the field fine maybe try running it on 3rd and short in plus territory in the 4th quarter with a lead.
-
@kjayhawks I can totally understand Grimes saying that. I mean, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State and others probably each have a team of coaches studying what makes Illinois’s defense so much better than everyone else’s.
-
@nuleafjhawk just when I thought maybe I was being a little hard on him that comes out and I shake my head thinking it could be a very very long season.
-
@kjayhawks lol. Hopefully it was attributed to him and not an actual quote.
-
Totally redeemed himself!
-
Can we change the name of this to crap on Jeff Grimes thread lmao. I’d say either he gets canned Monday or JD isn’t starting next week
-
@kjayhawks Grimes is doing extremely well crapping on himself
-
Can we get the old guy back? Any donors in the house?
-
@kjayhawks Done and done
-
I want to see Cole Ballard start next week.
-
LL in postgame says we are sticking with JD smh
-
Apparently on the radio call, Bmac was calling for Ballard

Daniels is all fucked up - - just a shell , no confidence, they were calling for Ballard–not sure he is the answer.–Do w have a Answer ? -Hell right now Marshall is as good as any, Last week I tried sticking up for Daniels—his week there IS NO EXCUSE

Daniels leading Grimes by a mile

It’s More Daniels making shit decisions pathetic no eccuse
-
I would put Ballard, let JD sit and reflect to get his confidence back.
He is thinking too much which is exacerbating his issues.
-
This HS coach is more innovative than Grimes!

Badass trick play!!!
-
@jayballer67 maybe he’s just following Grimes’ directions?
-
With last two games one has seen Grimes inability to adjust during games.
KU was unstoppable in first half but Unlv made D adjustments however Grimes was unable to make any adjustments and kept doing the same thing.

just sayin to easy to try and make Grimes the scape goat- might be part of problem but by far is not THE PROBLEM, Jalen making way to many terrible reads - – forcing , underthrowing , overthrowing - just not good QB play, and sd to say this is just not one of those situations where you can’t afford to continue- - JD has got to step up
-
Does anyone have an informed opinion about whether switching to Ballard right now would give us a better chance of winning or not?
-
Kansas has a huge QB problem.
-
@approxinfinity if all we do is lose (the Jr High team we played first doesn’t count…) then you can put in Ballard or the janitor at the YMCA and it wouldn’t make any difference

Last year is way too long ago for me to remember!
2023 stats. 4 games, 1 TD, 3 INTs, 55% completions, 115 passer rating, 75 yards rushing.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk yeah, i mean, i’m just wondering if switching to Ballard is giving up our chances of righting the ship. First half Daniels was great until the last minute INT. I would bet on him getting his head straight being our highest ceiling still, and also our safest bet. So… dont start him and bring him in if Ballard falls flat?

To me, JD’s intelligence and decision making seem like low points.
I just get the overcompensation vibe right now from him, too. He just looks like he has fake confidence. maybe after a long time off? Maybe still hiding or recovering from his back injury?
Dude’s been playing college ball for 4 years now, so something weird is happening.
I don’t think we know enough about Ballard to make the call, but he seemed at least capable in limited views.

I can’t believe I’m typing this or talking about, BUT as crazy as it sounds it’s true
Believe it or not in the overall Grand Scheme of tings these two losses doesn’t kill our year , our goals . -The real Season starts next week with West Virginia. Yes I know crazy to even bring up right now, but IF somehow w get these play calls, this QB situation straightened out - -we can still reach those goals-- Win the Big 12 Championship, would have to go on an crazy streak but it can be done with our schedule. If we can get this JD crap straightened out- - it can be done. Our defense is playing well enough to do their - -It’d crazy BUT it can happen
-
I think next week is a bowl elimination game. WVU had an easy schedule last season and people were pretty high on them to give Penn State a game and beat Pitt. Neither of which happened and they sit at 1-2 with us. I don’t have the numbers but I bet the odds of making a bowl after a 1-3 start are very slim. Maybe JD just needs to go back to Morgantown, where he claimed a new era of KU football had begun after a win in 2022.

Brutal tweet: https://x.com/sport_midwest/status/1835441499598672260
-
@wissox I don’t tweet. Brief synopsis? KU Sucks ???
-
@nuleafjhawk I thought you could see the tweet without an account. The meme had Jalen now receiving NIL money from Pepperidge Farms for their turnovers.
-
@wissox I was told that JD has the worst passer rating in college football in attempts more than 15 yards down field. The ESPN Wichita guys pretty much spent the whole segment laughing at Jeff Grimes and JD. I have to agree with them also bringing up how if KU can’t win this season returning all the talent they did, how in the hell will they win next season?
-
@kjayhawks well JD will be gone and I’ve been reliably informed he’s the worst QB we’ve ever had, kicks puppies, and causes global warming so just from that you should see improvement if the commentariat is to be believed
The real answer is ABC: always be cruitin. The portal will be our bff come January
-
@FarmerJayhawk haha sadly I’d take Montell Cozart over him at this point.
-
To add to the original point of this post I just came across a nice Jeff Grimes stat from last season. Baylor special teams scored 54 points in their first 6 games while the offense was only able to muster 42 points. Why did we hire this dude? One good season at BYU in a cupcake conference.
