Kansas vs West Virginia

  • If Mason and Selden both play like tonight, we’re not even average!

  • @globaljaybird I know that losses happen, but it is the way we lose. Looked like the WSU game. These guys crumple when even a little pressure is applied. This team will not make the final four if they play panicked from pressure. Coach has to work with them because it is a toughness thing.

  • @jaybate-1.0 WVU is a good team, and a loss on the road to a good team in conference certainly isn’t the end of the world. Would have been mildly (but pleasantly) surprised to come out with a W. But, it’s the manner of loss that is so vexing. It’s not like they shot the lights out or played that well - it’s more that we played very poorly - and not very smart. Didn’t seem to be any adjustments to what they were doing. We should have packed it inside and made them make a few outside shots - never did anything to stop their dribble penetration and pick up a lot of cheap fouls.

The question is whether anything is really learned from this…

  • That was/is the textbook example of how to lose. Didn’t think they would fail this badly on FTs and TOs though. No nights off from here on out.

  • well, we weren’t going to go undefeated in the conference. Our ‘best backcourt in the nation’ can’t possibly play worse than this.

    this too shall pass.

On to the next game. The road to #12 and Final Four is still well-lit for us.

  • Does Huggins still get a bonus for beating us?

  • @chriz yep

    @JayHawkFanToo

Why not just call me out?? You know you’re were talking about me. Hey dude I’m a KU homer and will never predict KU losing a game.

Man you’ve got issues. You rather KU lose so you can be right? Wow Dude. Not me I’ll gladly be wrong about anything as long as KU wins. Yet that is just the kind of fan I am.

  • I hope Bill schedules a team that presses like that twice a year to prep the Jayhawks for the tournament. Oh wait, they’re in the big 12, it’s been taken care of.

Will KU be scared of heighth? No, the Anteaters have been conquered. Also great scheduling.

Will KU handle a zone? Yup, looked good against the two different zone teams played so far.

Is the sky falling after one loss? Not yet, besides its my fault for setting foot in Manhattan on gameday. The Jayhawks and Bill Self had nothing to do with this loss. 🙂

  • @DinarHawk Maybe this will be our ugly loss of the year?

  • @DCHawker exactly. Coach has to do a little self reflection, man up, and admit he himself could do better. We should have won this game. WVU is not a good offensive team and we made them look like a title contender.

  • @DinarHawk How does a zone defense change KU getting their ass kicked on the glass and cut down on KU’s turnovers? Those were the two differences tonight. The two biggest weaknesses of playing a zone defense are giving up better 3 point looks (WVU shot 25% from outside so would not have been an issue tonight) and getting fewer defensive rebounding and considering WVU finished with 15 offensive boards, that number would’ve been higher had KU gone to zone and KU likely loses by more.

  • @JayHawkFanToo I still don’t think 4-5 losses on the road will win the big 12.

  • Yeah our defense was weak, especially late in the game. We played them too close on the perimeter. I’d rather them beat us with the 3 than driving the ball down our throats.

  • We lost the game by turning the ball over, letting them get dribble penetration, and by fouling too much. Even subtracting the 10 or so they scored at the line when we put them there on purpose, they still outscored us by 10 or so at the line. Heck, back off of them and let them beat us from the outside. Only Carter, I think, has proven the ability to hit the 3. Obviously, it is hard to win with 20 or more turnovers.

  • They out-scored us by 20 at the foul line.

  • Considering Self made ZERO adjustments, maybe he’s been spending his prep time looking forward to the UK game.

  • @Hawk8086 my thoughts exactly. Wasn’t it Graham mostly?

  • @DoubleDD

So, in order to be a “good” KU fan I have to lose sense of reality and state that KU is going to win every game including road games in the toughest conference in college basketball? That is not being a good fan, that is being delusional. Yes, my heart tells me that KU is going to win every time but my head knows better…your should try it sometime.

  • @DinarHawk You bet your condo he does… that’s why it’s called practice. But he couldn’t play for them tonight or any other night. WVU played tougher, stronger & thuggier, Is that a word? Bragg or Diallo aren’t able to hang with D 1 big boys yet, our young guards played awful soft & everyone else just followed the breadcrumbs…

  • @dylans ok, never go there again!

  • @DinarHawk let’s hear your suggestions! Man up

  • last two games have been on the road, TT was a tough game on sat, travel home, then go on the road all the way to WV, I can’t say I am surprised by how this game went. I am not happy, but I am not surprised. Here’s to regrouping.

Did anyone else think Vick could of helped us in this game? I don’t think he would of saved the game by any means but his ball handling seems to be much better than Svi or Greene, it would of been worth a shot just to see.

  • Why is that Korean gold looking a little useless right now? I’m not so sure that may have hurt the team. This team has played A LOT of bball.

  • @RockChalkinTexasSwish…you nailed it-FT’s, TO’s, & did I say rebounds???

  • And hey. Hate me if ya like. I’m sorry. Lucas belongs in an NAIA jersey. Idk how he got a D1 scholarship. And especially not to an elite school and ball club

  • @Jayrawks1 worth a try!

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 so coach doesn’t work with them in practice? He doesn’t get to talk with them in timeouts?

  • @cragarhawk I hate to agree and I was one of Lucas’ biggest supporters for most of his time at KU. I was waiting for him to blow up and become one of the best 5th yr seniors in D1 ball. I was wrong. He’s soft and doesn’t play big at all. He’s a 6-10 waste of space at this point. I don’t know what he’s doing, but he hasn’t done much.

He still has a whole season ahead and can prove me wrong though. I hope he proves me wrong.

  • @chriz Yeah, a box truck fulla chew & a lifetime supply of floss…

  • @Crimsonorblue22 less individual play, more ball screens, quit driving into four guys in the paint, move your feet and quit reaching, and box out your man and push him to the concession stands or you are going to sit on the bench.

  • How many teams in the nation have two Mcdonalds all American who sit the bench? Not counting Kentucky. Serious question, is there any other team?

  • @cragarhawk no hate, but don’t like to throw a Jayhawk under the bus. How well did BG play tonight? They are our kids

  • I just assumed since nothing we did changed the game maybe some raw talent would do the trick.

  • I hope this was a great big Charlie Foxtrot. If not, we are in for a nasty game with UK.

  • @Jayrawks1 shame on you for not telling us about your trip! Need a good story now.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Lucas is a 5th year SENIOR and he’s 6-10. I love the kid and want the best, but this kid needs to breakout NOW. He’s not the most athletic and he does give us some fundamentals, but it may not be enough to win critical games. His size is a joke at this point. He’s got to get mean and physical or he’s going to be an epic failure.

  • @truehawk93 think he’s a redshirt jr?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I also agree with BG. I don’t understand his talent. I’m at a loss right now.

  • @DinarHawk Sounds good to me dinar ! Cept the rocks also gotta fall…including the Ray, (don’t look Ethyl, Stevens free shots…

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I don’t know anymore. He’s just not where he should be at this point. I hope for the best and maybe soon.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 wish I had a great story to tell. Word got out to my family that we were in town so the day that was to be spent in Lawrence was spent eating lunch for one hour at applebees in OP, Gross! Going to wyndotte to see my sister for one hour, visiting my grandparents for one hour and then to Lawrence to eat a quick bite at Chipotle, made it to our seats w 45 min to spare, took in the atmosphere while I cussed at an old lady who stood up in front of me every 5 seconds because she thought something good was about to happen. The game was a W, much better than tonight. I left feeling bad for the 7’6 guy who seemed to be a gentle giant yet everyone hated him in the stands. Left soon after to a 3 hour drive home to Spfd MO, not a great story but the story all the same. We will be making one more trip later this year and I will keep my visit more a secret from the family lol

And how many McDonald’s MVPs have been so unproductive their freshman year? Bill is obviously an awesome coach, but that does strike me as strange.

  • @Jayrawks1 hey if it’s a game I’m going to I will take u guys around! Glad u didn’t get sick at chipotle too.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I absolutely hope the best for any of our players and Lucas included. But i don’t have a hair of a notion why he’s in a Kansas jersey. There’s been far better players that ended up transferring to a place that better suited them. And I think this is actually a case where he would do better for himself and another team elsewhere. Luckily I’m not the coach. If I were he wouldnt see another minute here. Bill is and its his choice. It’s my choice to disagree

  • I just realized WVU ended the game, with a few seconds left, up by 9-10 pts, and DUNKED the ball? To end the game? If that were Bill Self, he would’ve had our players dribble out for the win. Remember the EJ dunk in Ames? He was crucified.

I’m sick of being the nice kid on the block and getting blackeyes without punching back. Self needs to stop being nice and start getting some meanness in these guys. But hey, we’re KU? We give standing ovations to great players and apologies for being the big bully. I guess it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game?

  • @cragarhawk I do believe Lucas was a bit of a solution during a dry spell with bigs. There were a few years where we couldn’t buy a big.

  • @truehawk93 I’m not sure we’ve yet purchased one… Lol

  • @Jayrawks1 Hey…instead of cussing that old lady, maybe you should have turned her over your lap & laid a big old kiss on her. Maybe that is what she was yelling for?

  • I guess I kind of lucked out and my ESPN3 malfunctioned and fast forwarded to near the end of the game revealing the score. I’m really pissed that this team is not tougher than this. I got to see the first ten minutes or so, played OK, and then WVU started making layups, we started missing shots all over, turnovers, and then the thing fast forwarded inexplicably, which I guess saved me from watching this miserable underachieving team that we’ve had ever since nearly winning a championship. Why can’t we beat freaking West Virginia? This is not Kansas basketball. We don’t automatically assume a loss when we go to any gym in our conference. But now we do. We know we can’t beat WVU at their gym. Sure they’ll come to Lawrence and our soft little players will decide to perform for the home folks, but not before losing at KSU, OSU, OU, ISU. Sorry folks, but this loss feels like we’re going to bomb out in the NCAA again. I hope I’m wrong, and I’m usually more optimistic, but the instant replay I saw of the last several years games makes me very pessimistic.
