UC Irvine - How Many 3's Should We Attempt?

  • From the other site.

"Obviously, they’re bigger than what we’re used to playing against,” Self said of the Anteaters, who start 7-foot-6, 300-pound junior Mamadou Ndiaye and 6-10, 215-pound senior Mike Best. Jonathan Galloway, a 6-10, 235-pound freshman, and Ioannis Dimakopoulos, a 7-2, 262-pound junior, contribute off the bench.

“The big kid (Ndiaye) is a good player. He’s putting up good numbers (12.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 40 blocked shots). They are capable of giving us all kinds of problems because it’s going to be hard to score inside over all that length,” Self said. “(He’s) 7-6 tall, but probably an 8-foot wingspan. We’ll never see that again. Then you come in with their short guy at 7-2, which is unbelievable how long they are.”

  • @VailHawk I looked at their schedule and they haven’t much to show for all that size. If you just needed tall players to win a basketball game they’d be ranked in the top 25! So we should be able to operate inside and out because they’re not doing too much with all that size.

  • @VailHawk run, run, run!🏃🏃🏃

  • As I have said before, if UC Irvine players were very good, they would be playing for elite programs. Yes, they are tall and decent players but really not top level. There are many ways you can neutralize height with talent and I am sure Coach Self has been working developing a game plan to do just that.

  • @VailHawk

Wouldn’t it be great if this is the game Perry uses to learn to score on bigger post players!

Perry has maybe practiced too many reps on his moves. I know that sounds wrong… but hear me out.

When Perry has the ball in the low post he is like a robot… finishing out one of his patented moves. He is so mentally entrenched in successfully pulling off the move, he doesn’t focus on what he needs to focus on… the defender!

Perry doesn’t understand scoring space well enough. If he had a few more moves that really create definite scoring space, he could sort of stay in his “own world” when shooting the ball.

If he has to really TAKE IT TO the defender, he needs to pay close attention to the defender and score at the right opportunity. Like… have a shot fake, get the defender up the air, then go into the defender to draw contact to at least get FTs out of the deal. Or look at the defender’s feet to see where Perry can easily gain scoring space, even when directly taking it to the defender.

In some ways, it seems like Perry has advanced his game further this year and the game is coming to him slower. This is what it takes to EXECUTE good offense.

  • If we try 100 3’s and hit 40% (do-able) that would be 120 pts. Then let’s figure 18-25 from the free throw line and 5 or 6 two point shots, we should get to 150 no problem.

  • @drgnslayr Perry’s been catching the ball outside the paint, taking their 4 man out there. That’s what he does best. If they play off he can shoot, anywhere.

  • @nuleafjhawk

    Pure genius!

  • @VailHawk he knows the date too!🏆

  • @nuleafjhawk Quick, send an email to coach!

  • @wissoxfan83

Little known fact…@nuleafjhawk is actually snacks

  • Mamaduo has learned the great Jeff Withey ability of not leaving his feet to block a shot. I don’t think he really learned anything, he just can’t get his 300 lbs. off the ground. He’s not easy to foul out, but he is easy to wear out if we run like we have in all of our games except Harvard.

  • @VailHawk they better bomb away 20 + if they hit at least their average, they keep the lanes open and make it easier for KU to score inside.

  • @drgnslayr said:

“have a shot fake, get the defender up the air, then go into the defender to draw contact to at least get FTs out of the deal”…you nailed it! I have been yelling at Perry to do this since his Junior year in high school!

  • @VailHawk

This is all much ado about nothing if Perry is making his treys.

KU goes 4 out 1 in.

Perry stretches the Anteaters with treys. If Perry is hitting, we will crush them.

If Perry is not hitting them, Bad Ball them.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I’ve always wondered why Perry can’t do what Niang does for ISU.

He shoots the ball just as well and has the handles. Is it his passing ability?

  • @JhawkAlum I personally think it’s between his ears. Niang is just more aggressive and wants it to be on him in crunch time. Perry - not so much.

  • @nuleafjhawk It is! You are right. Its all mental. Perry is every bit as good as Niang is, just minus the killer instinct.

  • “If he has to really TAKE IT TO the defender, he needs to pay close attention to the defender and score at the right opportunity. @drgnslayr - Sounds like you need to get in Perry’s ear.

  • @wrwlumpy not that he needs to jump to be able to block shots, or dunk for that matter…

  • @Makeshift lets just hope he doesn’t step on anybody, see DG vs josh smiths foot!
