What a class act McLemore has turned out to be. He got an award in Sacramento for the community work he does, he comes back to Lawrence often and I understand he is taking classes and hopes to get his college degree sometime. What a sight it would be to see McLemore walk down the hill on graduation day…

  • Dg partially tore quad tendon. Out for games, no surgery. Self gonna find another guard

  • @Crimsonorblue22

    Just terrible about DG

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I still don’t understand why we never planned to take Ty and/or EJ. Both fit the age requirements unless the ones listed on the official wuGusa site are wrong. Too late now but should have had back up plans for things like this. If we weren’t planning on competing for a medal by taking a loaded roster then I’d rather us not participate and risk these types of injuries. Glad it wasn’t something that would be season ending like Paul George but fear this will linger…

  • @Kip_McSmithers

Age and also the players have to be taking classes…it is the World “UNIVERSITY” games after all…

  • @JayHawkFanToo I think they could sign up still for a class, think it could be anything. Online?

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Maybe…but do we really want to take “ringers”? At least McLemore is actively taking classes and pursuing a degree, much like Aldrich did and eventually graduated. Just my opinion and I have no clue how other teams/countries operate.

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I know that’s the same tired ass line Self keeps saying but these are the actual guidelines here:

Each athlete must meet the following specific criteria in order to be eligible.

United States Citizen and able to obtain a US Passport.
Born between January 1, 1987 and December 31, 1997. For basketball, the athlete must be born after January 1, 1990 and before December 31, 1997.
Have taken at least one 3-credit course towards a degree or diploma within the last year before the GAMES. Incoming freshman and transfers are usually eligible.
Sign the Comprehensive Acceptance of Team USA Agreements form.
Sign the Team USA Honor Code and Code of Conduct form.
Sign the Team USA Authorizations, Waiver and Release Form.

which are found here: World University Games USA Official Site

Top of the page states this is for the 2015 games so it’s not an old link. I’d like someone like Jesse, Gary, or Keegs to actually press Bill on the real reason he’s not using guys that know the system and instead is bringing in guys that could be our competition.

  • @Kip_McSmithers

    I believe the item:

“Have taken at least one 3-credit course towards a degree or diploma within the last year before the GAMES”

…is the catch. Both Tyshawn and EJ graduated from KU and they would most likely need to be admitted to a graduate program before they can take classes, and as far as I know, neither is pursuing a graduate degree. Same thing with Releford…now, Tyrel Reed might have been eligible since he is in Medical School but I believe is 8 months too old. It seems simple but it really is not, since many players from other schools that would be eligible are likely taking summer classes like most athletes do.

  • @Kip_McSmithers are you saying those guys are not to old? I’d love to have them.

  • @JayHawkFanToo couldn’t you say a potential OAD is a ringer? Not arguing about it😉

  • @Crimsonorblue22

I believe we are taking about different situations. EJ and Tyshawn have been gone for a while, are not actively pursuing a degree and are no longer associated with the school other than through the Alumni Association. A potential OAD such as Bragg is enrolled in the university and will be attending classes for at least one year and thus he is fully associated with the university, right? As per rules, incoming students are eligible. Just my opinion…and I could be wrong. 😃

  • @JayHawkFanToo

Fully aware they aren’t currently enrolled.

But the fact that we only had 3 scholarship guards on the roster prior to LV signing, which was pretty late this spring, has been known for sometime. It’s not like Oubre leaving, Svii not being able to play, and the Greene injury was all a surprise. Self and staff should have reached out to the guys that they and we know can play in our system and expressed interest early on. And what is it going to hurt for EJ and/or Ty to take a class or two, get a free ride to South Korea, see some sites, kick some ass, take some names, and maybe play a little ball if need be??

Maybe I’m being selfish but I’d rather give the opportunity to one of our own (guys that gave it their all for 4 years!!) and not to someone that isn’t a 'Hawk through and through.

Call me a pessimist but I think this “little” knee problem is going to linger more than they want to lead on. Already going to miss all of the summer… So much for DG getting some extra reps. Now he’ll be pretty far behind.

  • @Kip_McSmithers Self was quoted last month as saying EJ, Travis, TT were all too old per the rules. I know some here have interpreted the rules so as to allow them, but Self apparently reads them differently.

Right or wrong, Self chose not to reach out because he thought they were ineligible, not because he was negligent.

  • @ParisHawk

Do you believe everything Self says?? Look up the rules yourself. I’ve read his quotes. That’s why I want someone with a connection to actually ask him the truth.

  • @Kip_McSmithers I get it, you thought it was a deliberate omission, not negligence. Your previous post didn’t make that clear.

  • @Kip_McSmithers So you think Bill Self is lying about this?

  • I think Self would want them, confusing! I do!

  • @ParisHawk

    This is all my speculation…

I think at first Self declared them too old so he didn’t scare off a OADer. I think Self thought that by saying we didn’t have other options (like EJ, Ty, Trav) it would make the OADers more likely to sign here. We all know OADers don’t want competition. And maybe Self was confident that he would land one or two of the OAD crop by saying this so he didn’t feel we needed the former guys.

We know Self and Co dangled the WUG in front of all of the big time recruits. TV time, extra games, playing against other countries, representing the US, free trip… I mean, why wouldn’t these OAD guys want that?? But then those OADers see a returning starter at point and at the 2. Plus we’ve got two 3s that will push them for minutes…

Well crap, after all of that the OADers picked other landing spots.

Which sucks because Self had already stated that EJ, Trav, and Ty were all too old and he doesn’t want to look like an ass and back track on his earlier statements so it’s go with what you got.

Landing LV cushioned our talent deprived back court and adding an outsider on a former 'Hawks team (Nic) helped us out but why help the enemy I say!!

And not going with a fully loaded team is just bonkers to me. Looking at you TS and EM.

Call me a dick but this isn’t Jr High. And obviously Self feels the same way. Why else is he now scrambling to pick up one more player??? If Self wanted to put EM and TS on the team he should have felt confident in their ability to play as a back up in case one of our players went down while in South Korea.

I don’t like the idea of going to SK to lay a big fat egg and risk injury. If we’re going to go I want us to compete for a championship. Instead we are heading over there with a half loaded team… What could have been.

  • @Kip_McSmithers not buying. It was clearly stated current and incoming players had priority over alums. There is no OAD subject.

Would you mind saying who you think is eligible and quote the age limit rule you are referring to? You should offer some evidence to back up your interpretation.

  • EJ and tyshawn are both born in 90, which would meet the requirements of kips rules up above

  • @ParisHawk

I already provided a link. Scroll up. Official WUG site. I’ve stated EJ Ty and Trav.

  • @Kip_McSmithers hadn’t seen your link. Yes, EJ was born after jan 1 1990 so apparently eligible. Point taken. Now I’m curious too.

  • @ParisHawk

Makes one wonder what the real reason is doesn’t it. Now my OAD conspiracy isn’t so crazy?

  • @Kip_McSmithers

Have you considered that Tyshawn and EJ might not want to take classes? Or more likely and as per the rule that you posted:

"Have taken at least one 3-credit course towards a degree or diploma within the last year before the GAMES"

Both EJ and Tyshawn already GRADUATED from KU, so in order to take a class "towards a degree or diploma" they would have to apply and be accepted in another undergraduate or a graduate program program, something that might not be feasible on short notice, and then complete one class before the games. Maybe Coach Self would be willing to do this but most Departments/Schools within the University take admissions to their programs seriously and would take a dim view of accommodating a player so he can join the team for 2 or 3 weeks…I know the School of Engineering would not do this and I would like to think other Schools would not participate in this farce either… Maybe I have too much of an idealistic view of what I believe a University should be.

  • I’m not sure it’s Do or Die if we don’t find a replacement for Graham. While it would be nice, we still have a pretty damn good team already heading to SK.

  • @JayHawkFanToo but Self said to old, nothing about classes.

  • @hawkmoon2020 but no depth for so many games.

  • Hypothesis: Self expected to sign another eligible player, but missed. In the current destabilization campaign being waged against certain schools, he has wisely declined to enroll any of his older players in nominal classes just to make them eligible, which might later be used, like UNC’s easy class system, or UT’s nascent allegations of improprieties, to justify broad fishing expedions into KU’s program.

REMEMBER: so far, there seems to be no statute of limitations constraining those appearing to engage in program destabilization. UNC’s improprieties were reputedly rectified 4-5 years before the allegations were made.

REMEMBER ALSO: without a statute of limitations constraint, KU might be vulnerable back to the Roy tenure.

REMEMBER ALSO: what if the recent Cliff Alexander situation and this apparent short leashing of Snacks were sensitive to a fishing expedition set off by bending rules with class taking without degree pursuit?

Coach Self is apparently playing this close to the vest. Maybe he decided from the moment Adidas lean Jaylen Brown JUMP-shifted for Nike-UC and KU wasn’t even going to get a short stack of OADs that the WUG mission had drifted. It became entirely focused on extra practice for regular season.

All of the above Seems feasible and his prudence seems fitting in the current climate.

    Rock Chalk!!!

“Crazy” is your word not mine.

I just don’t see how any recruit could imagine Self preferring an alumnus to an incoming player he could coach up all summer.

I’m curious precisely because I don’t see any plausible explanation, including yours.

  • @jaybate-1.0 They can’t really go after KU since they aren’t really going after UNC. Normally I would have the same concern concerning the NCAA “rule stack” we normally would endure, but that ACC “circle of protection” has us covered this once.
