Did Vick get the kiss of bench?
-
Self just said he might be the best athlete on the team. Recall ther players he has said this about.
-
@jaybate-1.0 Idk man. He said it about Oubre and Wigs didnt he?
-
Didn’t he say that about Russell Robinson before he was disciplined?
-
And Justin Wesley.
-
I don’t think he ever said Wigs or Oubre were the most athletic guys on the team.
EJ and Trav tied during the years they didn’t play.
-
My immediate reaction was he was tossing Vick a bone, praising his innate ability which has little or nothing to do with playing time.
Please let him be better than Justin Wesley. Or…who was the “most athletic” post player from the Roy era who fouled like crazy and rarely saw the court…his name escapes me right now (case in point).
-
@jaybate-1.0 Watching him in drills, I’m thinking you’re right.
-
@ajvan Lester Earl?
-
I seriously doubt Self went through the trouble getting Vick only to let him sit the bench. I know Self’s psycho tendencies, but I don’t see Vick sitting the bench. I don’t think he’s going to get much at first. I actually see KU being significantly deeper than many of us were discussing prior to Vick and Diallo.
We now have true back-ups for each position:
Mason-Graham
Selden-Svi-Vick (I think Self is going to keep Vick for the long term)
Svi-Green-Vick (Green’s recovery seems to be better than expected)
Ellis-Traylor-Bragg (I think Ellis will play some 3 in certain games, maybe? maybe not!)
Diallo-Lucas-Mick
Coleby- ineligible for transferring
-
Kenny Gregory? He had a verified vertical leap of 45.5", highest verified.
-
@truehawk93 Self plays at most 9 players in his rotation. Barring injury, Vick is likely to see minimal playing time this year and possibly next because of that depth you referred to.
Self typically plays 5 perimeter guys and 4 post guys in his rotation. Mason, Graham, Selden, Svi, and Greene figure to be the 5 perimeter players this year. Vick is depth and development for the future.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 ole Vick will have a preseason to prove himself though, can’t wait!
-
@Crimsonorblue22 From now on, I will be calling him by his literary nickname you hath bestowed him. Old Vick. I am old enough to say I saw Sir Ralph Richardson perform in that sacred hall.
-
What role did Ralph chew up the scenery in?
-
I almost forgot all the praise AW3 got in his last preseason. Then he had another year of collecting splinters in his arse.
Bloody hell, mate!
Shabba ranks for the butcher’s hook!
-
@FarSideHawk @JayHawkFanToo It finally came to me. He’s actually a cut below both those guys. Man, I remember waiting 4 years for Kenny Gregory to take off…
The guy is Bryant Nash. Remember him? “Most athletic player on the team” who should probably have been in track & field, not hoops.
That said, I’m not comparing Vick to those guys, just reminiscing. Vick will be a contributor.
-
Yes, Coach Self is not Nostradamus when it comes to who will play.
-
Must hope LaG makes shots to avoid Vick the Brick moniker.
I doubted Devonte would play as much as he did. What do I know?
-
@jaybate-1.0 Graham got a shot early on because he was only other option at PG. He kept and expanded his role because of how he performed when given the opportunity.
KU doesn’t have the same depth issues in regards to Vick playing at the two. Selden, Mason, and Greene will likely see 95% of the available minutes at the 2 this year.
-
Oui.
-
@jaybate-1.0 Thesus in Midsummer’s ND. He was very old at the time. “Now fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour draws on apace;”
-
@jaybate-1.0 “Vick the Brick,” ouch. Now there’s a train wreck waiting to happen.
Here’s hoping Vick knocks in a solid 50% of his shots in limited action this year and never has to deal with the escalating pressure of a monicker like that.

I knew a guy who tried to play college golf named Shank…didn’t go so well…true story
