@Kcmatt7 Have an antidote for the koolaid handy. We were supposed to win the Big 12 this year. Sorry.
Yea I mean clearly a disappointing season but I still like our roster a lot. JD6 should come into the season much sharper than he did last season.
The best thing KU has going for it is solid line play on both sides of the ball. OL should be one of the best in CFB again.
DL should have Dunn, Caldwell, Keys, Miller, Jobe, Brooks, Brinkley, and Withers. I think they’ll add another edge in the portal.
I suspect we will be improved at LB, but worse at CB. Safety a bit of a wash.
Overall I think the roster ends up close to as talented as last season’s. Continuity in the system is massive. Not having a mass exodus of transfers out is noticeable to me. Just feels like we are building something in Lawrence…
-
I think the OL has about 7 good bodies, but how they play them will be interesting
- Foster
- Mercer (transfer)
- Tanner (transfer)
- Baynes
- Clements
- Doiron
- Gorczyca
They added another transfer from NW Missouri that could become a guy, but I personally didn’t love his film. Plenty of other bodies on the roster who could also develop, but top two would be:
- Amir Herring (Michigan transfer)
- Darrell Simmons (got some PT this season)
I think they could add one more here but it would have to be a for sure starter type.
-
@Kcmatt7 Swain is saying that preferably they will go after one more WR
-
@Kcmatt7 I know. I always go into football season with too high hopes. One of these days they will meet/exceed expectations.
-
@Kcmatt7, I’m too negative. Ima make a New Year’s resolution to be better.
Thinking about it a bit, last year’s 9 - 4 team way exceeded my expectations!
-
Interesting to note why it was important to keep JD6.
Tulane’s QB who is a true sophomore is rumored to have a $4M/yr deal to go play at Duke for the next two seasons. You DO NOT want to need a portal QB. Tulane QB is a total stud but that is a steep price.

Exactly. There was a large contingent of KU fans that wanted to move on from JD6. That would have been a true FAFO moment as KU would not be very good at all without him next year. They just cant not realistically compete in the NIL market for true P4 starting caliber QB’s.
-
If Isaiah Marshall is good then that won’t be a problem
-
He can still be good, but he is not ready to start next year.
-
@Woodrow in your opinion…

The QB market in the portal is INSANE.

They continue to cook. Another OL addition with multiple years to play.
Staff has been intentional in adding guys with 3 years remaining on the OL. They know we need to turn the page after this season and are doing their best to be ready for that reality.
-
KC, On paper at least do you think this team is better than last year’s team?
-
@Woodrow that Marshall isn’t ready to start.

Will be tough to replace Cobee, Melo, Neal and the WRs….
But I think we upgraded at TE & LB.
Ultimately, we are probably slightly worse on paper. That’s quite a bit of NFL-caliber talent lost. But there is so many unanswered questions they could just as easily be better.
I would just say that it is my firm belief if we just promoted Z and we have JD6 practice over the summer this team would have won 8+ games last season.
I would put next season’s W/L line at 7.5 probably.
-
@nuleafjhawk obviously it is the coaches opinion that watch him practice everyday.
-
I think the fanbase is really sleeping on Ballard…
-
@Kcmatt7 I don’t think Ballard is too bad watching him play as a freshman against KSU last season. If Rich Miller doesn’t drop a walk in pick 6, he’s in Jayhawk folklore
-
heck ya, got another nice commit today. WR – Bryson Canty from Colombia --I think 6’2 & 205 portal— offers from others ended up choosing over Houston & Wake Forrest.
43 catches this year I think 769 yards - -& 9 TD’S - - Crowded receiver room --this makes 8 Receivers - -I think could go like Hendeson , Canty , & Pickett in some fashion— -think we are going to be just fine- - One yr of eligibility left
Had to edit , also saw his catch’s averaged out to like 17 yards per— I can live with that
-
Updated counts. It reflects all portal commitments and early enrollees. It does not reflect the 10 freshmen that will enroll in June. So that puts us at 81. I think we still need a punter (duh), a DE, a LB, and a DB. Maaaayybe another WR and DB.
-
@FarmerJayhawk How many receivers do we need ?- -We picked up our 8th today from Colombia
-
@SlimShaddy54 they’d take another young guy if the fit was there
-
Crystal ball for Trey Lathan to Kansas. Would be a great get for us.
-
Sitting good with Hunter Higgins too going to announce on the 15th. Looks like going to come down between us and Wisc , got a CB for him also
-
Lathan to Kansas. Just read that he entered the portal AFTER playing in WVU’s bowl game. That is a GREAT sign.
-
@Jhawk69 Big time get. played like the third most snaps, just a very solid LB, get’s down hill really good, gave us fits this yr got two yrs of eligibility -Line backing group shaping up nice
-
Love the activity in these offseason football threads. Feel like i know the pulse of where we are. Also, glad this team has a pulse. Fair to say at this point that Kansas football is … reloading not rebuilding?

Very good get. Linebacker room looks super solid. Front 7 should be solid, imo.

Agreed. Probably need one more DE but other than that I’m happy with where we are on defense.

Ben Bell?
Edit: He’s visiting Ole Miss, so maybe not.
-
We also need a punter.
-
We now have a punter. Based on stats alone he looks like an upgrade over Greaves.
-
Based on numbers, he is a clear upgrade over Greaves.

I like that we have committed to the rugby punter though. Prefer it for CFB. I don’t like having backup OL chasing after the Reggie Bush’s or Tyreek Hill’s of the world.
-
Auburn transfer Laquan Robinson commits to Kansas. He is a safety.
-
Apparently he may have moved to linebacker while at Auburn. He has 2 years of eligibility.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich Another good add

I’m guessing depth/special teams

I feel better about week 0 now https://x.com/mzenitz/status/1878218088178450761?s=46&t=c0LiaNrxev6XfT7LIH8dAQ

For anyone interested, here’s what I have for next year’s football roster so far. 83 scholarship players. 40 offense, 41 defense, and 2 special teams. 21 portal commits coming in. 9 portal commits leaving. And this assumes Daniel Hishaw will be back.
-
Here are portal commits
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich Thanks for putting this together, very helpful.
-
@AsadZ Yep, no problem.
-
I really like our defense.
-
Texas DE Justice Finkley to KU. Fills a position of need. He has 1 season of eligibility.
-
He’s 6’2’’, 250 lbs, so I expect him to fill the SDE position replacing Jereme Robinson. Dean Miller would be the other starter at DE.
Reading comments from Texas fans, it sounds like he was a good player but he was just getting passed on the depth chart by 1st round NFL draft picks and freak athletes. He also seems to be a very high character guy.
Pretty happy with our DE room right now.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich I think I like this
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich you know it’s crazy and yes I know - -I know some of these guys didn’t take a lot of snaps BUT think back 4-5 years ago we couldn’t even gt a sniff from players like the one’s we have joining our program now- - -a lot of snaps or not. I mean we just this yr alone got two transfers from Alabama, a guy from Auburn – This guy from Texas- -Hell even our boy from S Carolina to name just a few, it’s just another sign of how this team and our perception from others have changed. Other players see how the program is changing.& they want to be a part of that
Better High School recruits – A Coach who cares and can Coach- - A new Stadium- -we have really turned the corner, not quite 100 % quite yet but for sure on the way up. t

Yes, despite a slightly disappointing season, it feels like we have some momentum going now in football and it’s starting to manifest in recruiting and the transfer portal. We have had a very successful portal so far this offseason with 22 commits and addressing a lot of positional needs after graduating 30 seniors. I suspect we will add a handful more players in the spring portal, and we might lose a few more as well. Daniel Hishaw hasn’t given a definite answer on whether or not he’ll be back. Greydon Grimes is still on the roster despite his father taking the OC job at Wisconsin. But we are in really good shape heading to the spring portal. Not really any needs, but potential wants for me would be multi year players at Safety, OL, TE, and WR.
