SELF AND TURGEON NAMED SEMI-FINALIST FOR NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR.
-
Self should win NCOY just for having to take the media assault all year that “this is the year Kansas won’t repeat…”
“Could it be?”
“Texas has all the horse!.”
“Iowa State is as gifted of a team as you will find on the planet!”
Self has had to endure all the bull snit, he should now get to eat the steak!
-
Bevohouse steak w/ mayordaise sauce.
-
Totally agree, we survived the gauntlet and came out victorious again. Self should at least win Big 12 coach of the year. I mean no other school in the conference can replace the Top pick & #3 pick in the NBA draft and do what he’s done.
Wiggins to Oubre wasn’t a big drop off at all, you can even argue that Oubre has fit into this team so well that you don’t even know he was a freshman. But to replace Embiid with nothing, not a single Center, just a collective assortment of bigs is astonishing.
But this is KU where winning is the culture.
For that the media darlings will probably hand the award to Bennett. I don’t blame them for it UV has 1 loss and a collection of players who bought into his system. No stars, no thrills, just plain good basketball. Seasons like that don’t come around often and especially with a team that wasn’t expected to be as good as they were.

@JayhawkRock78 Why?
Must you ask why? Because Coach Self is “our” coach and as KU fans…this is how we roll…
-
@JayHawkFanToo I wasn’t asking why the vote for Self, I was questioning him why he’d take Manning 10 out of 10 times.
-
@wissoxfan83 Yeah, I went a bit over the top on that. I guess I just like Danny a lot better. How about I back off and say, Danny #1. Turgeon 2?
-
@JayhawkRock78 Works for me, I wasn’t trying to be difficult, just wondering why you so overwhelmingly favored Danny.
-
@wissoxfan83 I guess I was having a bromance moment. ugh.
-
@wissoxfan83
The thread is about Turgeon and Self being COTY candidates…logical assumption, wouldn’t you think.
As far as Turgeon and Manning, I don’t believe either one is ready to take over KU. although, if they were the only two choices, I would have to go with Turgeon based on his experience and record. Manning still has to prove he can coach a top program; his time at WF has been rocky, to say the least and I would not consider Tulsa a big program but more of a steppingstone.
-
@JayhawkRock78 Oh I understand. Ever since Danny made me a very happy 1988 graduate I’ve had a bromance with him too!
-
No, I’m not logical. Read what @JayhawkRock78 wrote on his post last, that’s what I responded to.
-
@wissoxfan83 you guys!️
-
I would take Tony Bennet as the next coach.
-
@wrwlumpy Way to go Turge! Bill Self should absolutely hands down win it this year. Im certain if he wins at least a couple games in the madness he will get it.
Jay Wright is an idiot, he doesnt deserve $%#!! Neither does Calipari.
-
@wrwlumpy Do you think the KU faithful would be ready for a coach that is perfectly willing to win games by the score of 48-43? I think he’s an excellent coach with a nice coaching pedigree. I’m just not sure KU would want that style of play to come to Lawrence.
-
@JayhawkRock78 For real! Wasnt Turgeon and Manning on that same team? I forget. Anyways, given that Coach Self will probly retire at KU, when the vacancy happens, it’ll be many years of experience for Danny, who will be in his prime by then I assume. Manning is also a much bigger draw for 5 star recruits, guard or big. I dont know this for fact, its just opining.
-
@drgnslayr Thats what Im sayin! Him AND his team have had to endure the doubting and naysaying and flat out disregard for the whole season. They proved everyone wrong. The kicker is, I think, they need to make some noise in the madness before he could get COY.
-
Turgeon was at KU from '83 to '87, Manning from '84 to '88.
Turgeon is 50 and in his 17th year as HC in College basketball,
Manning is 48 and in his 3rd year as HC in College basketball,
Not even close in HC experience.
-
Sounds good, until you consider a guy named Kevin Ollie. Second year in he took home the gold. And he only had 2 years as an assistant coach before that.
I think we get too focused on stats. I don’t know which guy I would prefer. I’d base it on investigating further and interviews… lots of interviews… with both coaches, old staff members and faculty members… and also players.
I think both of these guys are qualified and capable.
Gosh… just looked over the list and Scott Drew is on it! Seriously?
-
@JayHawkFanToo Thats why I said Manning will be in his prime and ready to take over KU when Coach Self decides to hang em up.
-
So far Manning season (13-17 overall and 5-12 conference) is nothing to write home about; Turgeon, on the other hand, is having perhaps his best season as a Head Coach. I love Manning as much as any Jayhawk fan and I thought he did a great job as an assistant; however, his capability of leading a big time program is yet to be determined.
-
Kevin Ollie hit the jackpot and the perfect storm all in one last year. How is that working out for him this year? Tied for 5th in a weak American Conference and ranked 59th as per Ken Pomeroy. Keep in mind that the year UConn won the title, it finished third in conference with a 12-6 record, he was also playing with Calhoun’s recruits…can you say Weber? When he shows that he can have his team consistently in the top 20 then I will consider him a better than average coach, until then he is/was just a flash in the pan.
-
I agree that Ollie has to still prove himself. I’m not one of those National Championship idolizers that put everything on those as the determinant of what makes a great coach.
But he definitely hit the jackpot.
Curious if he can recruit… or as you say… is he just another Weber!
-
I think you just hit on a new insult. Call someone a Weber.
-
@wissoxfan83 that’s a great one!
