Grady got the start!

  • Last night against the Bucks — 11 points but on 2-10 shooting

  • Grady got demoted, playing GLeague ball.

  • @wissox said in Grady got the start!:

Grady got demoted, playing GLeague ball.

I realize that the NBA drafts on potential, but Grady definitely would have benefited from another year of college ball; physical maturity if nothing else…

  • Grady? Is that the fellow that bled crimson and blue - until the green took control?

  • @nuleafjhawk Exactly! @DCHawker And we would be in much better shape than we are as well.

You’d think winning an NCAA championship meant something to kids. But it didn’t mean anything to Dwight Gooden, he bolted a year early when we may have gone undefeated had he stuck around.

  • @wissox Drew Gooden haha Dwight, sorry that made me laugh

  • @kjayhawks Didn’t care enough to look it up, and I originally wrote Doc, but then I thought that was the pitcher so thought I had it right!

  • @wissox I get the wish for players to stay, but for most of us college is somehow preparatory for a career. Drew made $75 million in the NBA and by leaving college early was able to ensure he didn’t suffer a catastrophic injury. Did you ever hear anything about Archie Marshall after his two ACL injuries?

Gooden came back in 2016, finished his degree in communications, and is now a broadcaster.

I can’t find any conceivable justification to say he did anything wrong.

  • @mayjay It’s not “wrong” to leave college for the pros. But it’s disappointing to the fans. We (at least I) can’t form a “bond” with them.

    Grady Dick. Frank Mason.

Which name gives you the warm & fuzzies? Which name says he could have given us the warm & fuzzies?

  • Unfortunately Grady had to go based on draft position. That contract is fully guaranteed, and it doesn’t look like he’s worth it currently. Maybe he’ll turn things around or maybe he got exposed. Either way he’ll have a few million to fall back on, maybe he’ll finish his degree and get a different job (not as a fashion coordinator of that I’m certain). 🤷♂

  • You can’t fault a guy if he’s a first rounder, guarantees you 3 years and millions of dollars. The Nil will help some guys on the fence. Think of guys like Dotson and Selby that have pretty much disappeared from any relevance.

  • Grady showed up, hit shots, learned to play some D and actually played hard for KU, including a few layouts that I thought he might not get up from. He was 100% with us for the year it made sense for him to be with us. He left what it no longer made sense for him, when he knew he’d be a lottery pick. Do I wish he’d stayed another year? Sure. Could he have used another year before going pro? Yup, maybe two. Would we have better odds against UCONN tonight were he starting? You bet. But to take issue with his decision seems misplaced to me. It’s his life. He should do what he thinks is best for him, not us. KU is quite high on my list of life interests, but for this issue I am but a single fan hair on the fan tail of the Grady’s life dog.

  • @HoraceZontal This is a topic that everyone has always been and will always be disagreed about. My take is someone like Ben McLemore, who needed the money to provide for his family - sure, go Pro. Many others do not need the money - and now they are getting money anyway - fans like me want to see someone with a love for the college, the community, the fans - someone who bleeds crimson and blue - we want them to stay around as long as possible. I’m endeared to those kinds of kids. The one and dones - I could care less.

  • Has anybody seen Grady’s new Meritrust commercial! It’s a tearjerker. His moms reading a letter to him about TRUST, remembering his foundation, showing pics along his way. She’s pretty teary eyed. I took it as hey, you are not quite where you want to be, but you need to keep working and you’ll get there. It’s really good!

  • @nuleafjhawk Very strange lack of empathy. Kid has a chance to be a pro player and earn upwards of a hundred million, and you write him off completely because he won’t risk that career for the sake of getting maybe a couple hundred thousand while boosting school spirit?

  • @mayjay I’m not empathetic because I have an opinion? So be it. Every OAD that’s been talked about for the last 15 years I’ve hoped we didn’t get. Because - ONE and done. It ain’t my thing. If you’re a big Kentucky fan and think get the best possible one year players you can get - good deal. I prefer a “relationship” to a stepping stone. Different strokes for different folks.

  • @nuleafjhawk I was simply referring to you saying you don’t care at all about anyone who leaves after one year. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but I am surprised that you are so absolute, with no allowance for career decision-making.

  • @mayjay its definitely not personal. I don’t know any of these kids. It’s my personality.

My wife and I have been together 48 years. I’ve been at my current job 27 years. Been at my church 34 years. I believe in sticking with things.

I bleed crimson and blue and I appreciate the kids who give us 4 years a lot.

  • @nuleafjhawk 48 is exactly twice our 24! Congrats! I like the 5 and 6 year guys like Mitch the most…

Who was your favorite player of all? I always liked the role players, like Releford, who waited for their turn and cheered everybody on. I remember noticing him in his red-shirt season as being the first guy jumping off the bench at every timeout and break in play.

  • @mayjay Thank you! And congratulations to you as well, 24 is quite a feat.

Oh my gosh. I’ll have to think about my favorites for a bit. There are so many! Right off the top though:

    Danny Manning

    Aaron Miles

    Jeff Boschee

    Nick Collison

    Raef LaFrentz

    Adonis Jordan

    Kevin Pritchard

    Darnell Valentine

Argggghhh. I can’t - there are too many over a broad period of time. But I think if I had a favorite favorite, it’s got to be Danny. I’m not trying to be a butt, but he came back for his Senior year and almost single handedly brought us a National Championship. And he’s such a decent, classy guy.

  • @nuleafjhawk Too hard for me to name a favorites list, would have 40 guys on since the mid 90s when I started watching as an 8 year old.
