Oh my, I hadn’t heard. What a great man. From my perspective growing up in Chicago, I never had a reason to dislike Carolina. They seemed to do things the right way. Of course he had great talent around him and just was seemingly always in the mix.
I’m sure it would have been frustrating to fall victim to his four corners stall. But you can’t blame him. I’m sure Guy Lewis wishes he knew how to implement it when NCState won it in 83.
I was happy when he got his first ring. Any team that defeated the evil empire of that day, AKA Georgetown, was my favorite team for that day.
I also remember when he didn’t get his first ring. Indiana in '81. I heard the news that day of Reagan’s assassination attempt, and spent the afternoon hoping they wouldn’t postpone the game just because the pres got shot! I was a kid, give me break!
I felt sorry for Dean in 91’ when he got T-d up twice at the end of our game in the final four. I don’t remember the details, but I think I remember him shaking Roy’s hand on the way out of the arena. I still think that game may have been Roys best coaching job.
I’m too young to have memories of him as a Jayhawk, as I’m sure almost all of us are, but that obviously is a sense of pride for many of us. Maybe someone can fill in some details of his time at KU.

The only father Roy ever had.
-
I was as ticked off at Dean Smith as you can possibly be without actually knowing someone, after the whole " Roy " debacle, but there’s no denying what he meant to the game of college basketball.
Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

RIP, Coach Dean Smith!
-
Wonderful work Lumpy.
Rest in Peace Coach Smith.
-
@wrwlumpy Nice tribute.
-
@wrwlumpy Thanks for the memories lump. Our roots run deep.

As with Big 12 Championships, great HC’s run through Lawrence, KS. Heck of league being formed upstairs. RIP HC Smith. Prayers to family and friends.

Whatever petty grudges any of us had against Dean Smith should be put aside, especially today.
A gentleman and a man of principle, he integrated the ACC and graduated over 95 percent of his players. For those things alone I’m proud to have grown up in the same state.
RIP Coach Smith.

I felt he cut his ties with Kansas and was truly interested in his program alone. IMO that happened because he didn’t want to compete with Coach Allen. He sent Larry Brown our direction to eliminate him from consideration as a future UNC head coach. He loaned us Roy Williams to better prepare him for when he stepped aside.

I did not see your wonderful post on Coach Smith and I created a same thread 2 hours later. I will be more careful next time round. RCJH!

@wrwlumpy You add so much to my enjoyment of reading these threads. Thank you for all the great pictures.

@brooksmd Who’da ever thunkit brooks. A small town kid from small town America (Emporia KS) born during the great Depression reaches the pinnacle of CBB excellence wherever he chose to be. I cannot forget that his first coaching “job” was an assistant on the bench with Mr Allen.
As with all mere mortals’ character, and certainly just as all of us, he’d likely done some things he was not proud of. But I for one am proud to say “Dean Smith was one of our own, a born & bred Jayhawk.” Rock Chalk !!

There’s not enough positive that can be said about Dean Smith. He was a favored son, and a champion on the court, on the sidelines, and in the arena of civil rights. It’s rare that a person of his standing would be willing to take on the burden of being a true hero, but Smith carried that load as though it were a feather-weight, and the label is absolutely warranted. Rest in peace, Dean.
