I think that Houston game really broke us last season. It’s a coin flip as to which is a bigger collapse. We had the ball at line for a 1 and 1 with 10 seconds to go in that one up by 6. I get so frustrated looking at online post where people that didn’t even watch the game blame the refs as well the TCU fans listening to Fran. Does anyone else watch him call other games? Is that critical of everything in those games. I’m sorry but 3 turnovers and 3 1 &1 missed in the final 1:34 seems like you would have to take some of then ownership of the loss.

Took a few days off since last Saturday really put me in a certain mood and needed to unwind from that without saying stuff in the moment.

Glad they pulled out the Win Tuesday.

I went to bed when they were down 15 midway 2nd half, partly for my sanity purposes at that point staring down the reality of being 0-2 in conference play for the first time in 30+ years. The other half is my work schedule makes it difficult to stay up to 11+ during the week. Given the OT and how the game went to the bitter end I can't imagine I would have slept much which would have made it worse.

Is this Karma for the Houston debacle last year or shades of the West Virginia game in 17. Those two certainly come to mind watching the last 15 minutes of this game. Very improbable win. I'd like to believe this will fuel. Some thoughts so far.

        • Peterson played a season high 32 minutes and looked noticeably more athletic than we've seen. While he's still clearly managing the issue, he did look good. I hope he can get to 100% but we'll only know when we really see that extra gear/speed/athletic ability that is there.

        • On Offense, it certainly feels like this team is starting over with DP in the lineup. Flory and Council have struggled so far to make an impact with him. DP needs to do a better job figuring out how to make plays for them too (only 2 assists in 2 games).

        • What has happened to the defense? Either UCF/TCU have really scouted us well with the switching D or something needs to change. Knowing Self he'll buckle down further with the switching. So far in conference play we are making it very easy for teams to T up from 3 and the rebounding efforts have been very poor. Part of the rebounding issues are caused by the switching D.

        • Self literally needs to light a fire under the bench right now. In 107 minutes here is the combined stat line of the bench so far: 12 pts, 6 rbs, 6 asts, 6 steals (5 from 1 player in 1 game) from 5 guys. This is where the main issue with this team lies currently. I don't know if it's become a coaching issue, but it's been very inconsistent all year and so far in conference play, well below average. The lack of production from the bench makes it so all 5 starters have no room for error. Maybe Peterson can go for 25+ every night and give us a chance but it's crazy how unproductive our bench is.

        • I really hope this win was a wakeup call for the team on the type of effort and execution needed to win in conference play. I expected better and we've seen discouraging things in both games. Self needs to figure this out, it starts with him having them prepared.

I was too tense before the game to draw my attention away from just watching the game with my girls. There's a rule that when we watch together, no phones. We are in the moment so to speak. It was nerve wracking and disappointing at times but once we tied it, I knew we were going to pull it out for Scooter. I had been reflecting on the many times I talked with him and all the tributes that have been pouring in for him are all absolutely from the heart. He touched so many people and for the team to get that click on of how important a game it was, there was no stopping them. An angel was there for them. To see the joy and bewilderment of the team we all love and what we as fans witnessed is one of those games that will live in so many hearts for so many years to come.

Absolutely that Houston loss was the dagger. The Utah Road Trip is where Self completely lost the team though. There was no consequences for certain mercenaries after though which I found even more troubling.

              One other comment.

Not having a 3rd reliable big is perhaps the other biggest team issue right now. Tiller has struggled a bit but I really don't think it's his fault as he's a freshman who wasn't supposed to be starting this year. He's also playing out of position currently to his skill set. Just a lot of up and down from him but there's no doubt we don't have another option to turn to without a major drop off in play from him.

I wished all offseason we'd get a veteran big, but we got Mbiya and that's not working out. I know they tried to get one in the portal but the price for those was steep & outside what KU could afford after they had to pay mup for Flory and spent big on Rosario late. It is what it is

@BeddieKU23 Again I have to agree. when Darryn is on the floor our offense is really choppy/bogged down , The other guys that's on the floor with him are having a tendency of standing around/ not moving waiting for Darryn to do something.

Now for the ones that are thinking wondering what the hell I'm talking about, don't get your shorts all in a knot I love having Darryn on the floor , but just look the others are doing nothing.

                    • perfect example is like you mentioned check Melvins production when Darryn is on the floor-- -- Check Flory's production while Darryn is on the floor. It's like they don't exist.

I was working on a post but it would have had a lot of crossover with this one. I very much agree that they are now learning how to play together all over again with trying to integrate DP. In particular DP and Melvin together because both are simply so ball dominant. I'm surprised by the lack of pnr with Flory as well. In general Flory seems kind of lost. We changed a ton from how we played last year so I'm sure that is part of it.

The huge thing for me with Darryn is he was actually driving the ball. It's been a huge part of his game and shows me he is much closer to 100%. Even when he played before, he wasn't driving like that at all.

With the defense, teams are reaaaally hunting with the switches now. Something has to change.

Assuming Darryn can stay healthy, it feels like Jamari is our best chance for bench production. Kohl gets his cardio in and Elmarko almost never looks to score.

Absolutely do not click (new video sept 30 2025): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjs1LR1sarQ

The portal big man market was insane. Flory is making less money than Owen Freeman who has been playing about 8 minutes a game off the bench for Creighton the last few games.

@BeddieKU23 Well not helping now but we will have that 3rd big next year with Adkins- Tille can play his normal position & fill in a couple of minutes at the five if need be,

I think also that if we could just get Kohl to bust loose what a HUGE help that would be. I admit and get down on Kohl at times BUT then come to reality the kid isn't even really suppose to be here yet , he should be a Senior in high School , & the step up to College has been hard on him this year- --still think he going to be fine in the future , his hard luck has really got in his head as far as shooting. He has the tools just needs a breakthrough and would really help

@BShark TCU was really trying to blow up any PnR opportunities with Darryn. They blitzed those screens every time and ended up double or even triple teaming him as he tried to initiate that action. He split it the one time and got the nice and one from it, but I don't think we can expect teams to just let him run a simple Pick n Roll for easy lobs to Flory as much as we might have hoped. He's good enough and by all accounts smart enough to develop a counter to that kind of D. And he still got 30... But much of his scoring early was from free throws because of TCUs attempt to simply take him out of the game by throwing bodies at him. He was bumped and fouled EVERY time he tried to get around the hedging big when flory or tiller would set the pick and the refs just won't call ALL of them.

                        Privilege isn't nonsense.

@BShark Owen Freeman, HS teammate of TCU guard Brock Harding, the guy who bricked FT's the other night helping us win. Moline HS, Illinois state champs, a really strong champion in a state with many great teams.

Two legit P4 guys would definitely be very hard to beat in actual highschool ball (ie no academy "schools").
