Beating Baylor

  • First comment on the game thread “We Good”. I think most of us were in agreement. But we still had some tense moments.

1st tense moment. 5-0 deficit. Was a little surprised Bill didn’t use one of his TO’s there. He likes to do that sometimes which irks me a bit, but today, he had a confident look on his face. So we outscored them by 8 from that early flurry.

2nd tense moment. After a foul free first ten minutes, the refs at Scotts suggestion started calling fouls on us. Suddenly at the 10:09 Big Dave gets whistled, and Marcus, and then again seemingly for everyone except, most importantly Doke. What irked us was Baylor’s aggressive D seemed to be fouling us at an equal rate, without the whistles. Home court advantage. But even as the fouls mounted, we just kept adding to the lead a little at a time.

3rd tense moment. Dotson and Garrett return with 2 fouls in the first half. I think Bill really wanted to walk off the court at the half ahead. Big decision. Baylor weak 1st half FT shooting helped. Our superb FT shooting in the 1st half was keeping us in it, we were perfect in fact, Doke making 1-1.

Of course we frittered away the lead as the D had to be careful not to saddle guys with the 3rd foul. Doke was doing his think like almost never before. I’m thinking this was his best game as a Jayhawk, but I may be wrong.

4th tense moment. Each little run cutting into the lead but the pick and roll offense was working superbly. It helped early in the half that the officials were calling fouls…on them. But each run of there’s was countered by our superb defense. They tied us at 18 apiece with 9 minutes left in the half. They never tied it again.

5th tense moment. The end. As we built the lead we figured a comeback was coming. Unfortunately we allowed it to happen. Garrett (I think) gets tied up (actually he got fouled) and could have used the TO, but decided not to. One of the two sketchy inbounds plays could have been saved by a TO also. Not sure if Self doesn’t like our guys using them but I sure wish they had.

6th tense moment. Moss tries to take on several Baylor defenders on a fast break and misses when we could have run a little clock. In fact that miss was one of many in the last 5 minutes. One reason we were holding our collective breaths at the end was because after Dotson made a layup at the 5:27 mark, we only had one more FG, the Doke put back that wasn’t dunked.

7th tense moment, and this is on Scott Drew. Hack a Doke maybe wins that game for Baylor. Thanks Scott. I kept waiting for it, and of course ultimately we won the game at the line which is a nice thing to write.

So there you have it. We won, it was actually beautiful. Ultimately it’s really a insignificant game big picture wise. We’ll move up a place or two, but with a 1 point loss, Baylor won’t be punished much. Both of our teams are currently almost locked in for the top seed. I’m excited as the midwest regional is in Indy, just down the road from Chicago, might be able to catch a regional final, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Looking to the future, we get DeSousa back in a week. Not sure it will help us any, but it’s certainly another big on the bench and he might have found a little PT today. Maybe he saves Big Dave who the officials had a vendetta against.

So we saw what our team can do, at full strength, as most of us wanted to see. These are special times for us fans of the greatest program in the country. Let’s keep this going.

  • 1 pt loss?

Pinch me I’m Irish (don’t dare kiss me I don’t know where your mouth has been) and our Jayhawks are surging. Mmmmmm.

    @wissox

It does mean something. Forget rankings and number one seeds. Baylor came to the Fieldhouse and beat our beloved Jayhawks. Our kids just returned the favor. It means something. Especially to these kids, and to me as one of their biggest fans.

  • @DoubleDD Yeah, I guess I was just looking at it nationally. I was thrilled as well and look at it as a great win we’ll remember for quite some time.

@Crimsonorblue22 I said Baylor took a one point loss!

  • this was a big win. All the channels I watched talked about it during all the other games. I put my rally cap on with under 4. 7-0 on the road, we’re tied and control their own future. let’s see baylor still has kstate, at tcu, tech and at wvu. proud of the coach because he learned from first meeting and he was strategically smarter than Drew. Glad to have the memory of Doke’s 23-19. It will live along with EJ at ISU and so many others. I hadn’t seen Doke that animated after the game and shushed all his haters.

Down Go The Aztecs! Down Go The Aztecs!

San Diego State falls for the first time this season 66-63 at the hands of a red-hot UNLV team.

  • @wissox welcome back, jaybate!

  • @RockChalkinTexas They’re a fraud. They haven’t even played a ranked team this season. And Gonzaga is losing 6-4!

  • A really good team win, this game reminded me of the battle we had in Allen against OK St in 2005 I believe. Two teams just trading jabs til the final horn.

  • @wissox still confused

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Is this the line you’re confused about? “We’ll move up a place or two, but with a 1 point loss, Baylor won’t be punished much.”

  • @wissox they lost by three

  • @DanR Oh, yes, duh, it felt like one!

  • @wissox that was my question!

  • Is the Big 12 Championship going to come down to the last weekend when both KU and Baylor play road games? KU plays OState, @KState, TCU, then @TT. Baylor plays KState, @TCU, TT, then @WV. I like our chances of winning the championship outright. We need some help. I’m hoping WV gets its game together and smothers Baylor in the last game. RC

I would love to have the Championship out right BUT West Virginia is headed the wrong way. The problem they have is the same problem that has plagued them through out this year - - - actually the same problem from last year. - - They have to much of a problem scoring the ball , not very good shooters - - long scoring droughts. Against Baylor even at home I think they are in trouble.

We have two games that could be what’s the word I’m looking for ? - -could be tedious - - probably not the right word but if we don’t have it strapped up we could bein for a dog fight. - -those would be K-State because of things that happened this year, and then ad just be a rival to them even though I don’t really consider it a rival anymore for it to be a rival the other team has to win a game more then once every three four years lol. But with what happened when we played earlier - -their dam fans and being rivals even though we are much better we got to be ready.

Then the last game of the conference Season - - Tech - -they will be jacked, fans will be jacked got to keep ol what’s his name Ramsey? from just going off. He had a pretty decent game against us. Holyfield played well against us , then their guard can’t think of his name - -got to be ready. - -However the way w are playing still gotta like our chances - - just play right ?

  • I just want to see KU win out. I don’t care if we split with Baylor or win the B12 outright because that’s outside of KU’s control. Finish 4-0, guarantee at least a share of the B12 title, win 3 more in KC for the B12 tournament title to leave no doubt, and then cap it off with 6 more wins in Omaha, Indy/Houston, and Atlanta and end the year on a 25 game winning streak I believe is what it would be if KU won out this season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 25 game win streak? Dang that would be a lot. But at the level we are playing right now, I wouldn’t say the odds are very low.

  • 37-3 has a nice ring to it.

  • @BShark Hmm that sounds familiar…
