Post-Game Round-up -- Kansas 86 Iona 66

  • Welcome, Jesse!

    I’ll check it out.

You are always welcome over here… in fact… is there any way we can hold a Q&A with you on occasion? In the process, we can help support CoverItLive. I think if we set it up in the right way, we won’t step on anyone’s toes in the process. There are many great Jayhawk fans on this site, and you are the best resource for Jayhawk basketball. It makes sense to put both together… and in doing so, we can help both of these websites. It is all for one great cause, Jayhawk basketball!

  • Thanks @Wishawk. And just let me know about the Q&A @drgnslayr. Be happy to do it if there’s interest.

  • @Jesse_Newell We will start linking to your articles here regularly! Your analysis is top-notch 😉

  • @Jesse Newell Good to see you here. Read your piece this am already, nice work, as always 🙂

  • @KIPMcSmithers–I agree with you on Marcus. He is in a unique situation because he is THEIR go to guy and primary ball handler, as I see it. Frank Mason has an arsenal of weapons surrounding him at all time; There is no need for him to not utilize them.

  • Hey Jesse, just loaded the “new” Newell post in the fav bar this am. Here at buckets we are perpetually overjoyed to add superior quality insight to the swim. Also please pull Oakville & jb into the water if at all possible. Oak is occasionally commenting at LJW, but unfortunately without the fervent appreciation of the dozen or so posters contributing now. His clever, humorous, & continually savvy posts would be a great augmentation to our membership, as you are. Welcome aboard Jesse, please don’t be a stranger on the deck!

  • Let me join in the chorus of Welcomes and Atta Boys for Jesse. Always enjoyed your work for KUSports. I hadn’t read the CJ sports section too much…now I’ve got a good reason!

  • @Jesse Newell

Hey guys — Hope you don’t mind me showing my face here.

Just wanted to let you know we’ve been doing live game blogs over at the CJ for the KU basketball games, in case you’re interested. It’s a little different setup with Cover It Live, but it has some cool features. Hoping to get some of the gang back together there, including (hopefully) Jaybate? We’ll see.

Great to see you posting here. I was wondering why I had not seen any of your stories at the LJW and a quick search told me you are now with the Topeka CJ.

Looks like there are lots of changes at the LJW and IMHO, not for the better: Their forum is now a shadow of what it used to be and now, their top talent is leaving as well. Their loss our gain, I say.

Your insight is always welcome here; we will be obviously looking forward to seeing your posts. Many member from the other forum post here now, so their names will be familiar. Make yourself at home and welcome again.

  • Thanks guys. Excited for the new opportunity. For now, just trying to get the word out that I’m over there now for those interested. Appreciate the positive feedback …

  • Jesse’s preview of the Iona game was spot on:

Iona more dangerous to KU than name suggests

“Most likely, the Gaels will gun away from three, meaning a good shooting night could keep them in it, while a bad shooting night could result in a blowout. In the end, I think KU prevails, but I’m guessing it’ll be closer than most think. KU 78, Iona 68”

KU scored a bit more, but he was 2 points off on Iona. CJ’s gain is JW’s loss… Glad he’s still covering the Jayhawks!

Looking forward to your analysis of Towson.

  • Welcome Jesse, Glad to have someone here from the good o’l days. Making a buck in Journalism these days is a gift. Will you be doing your breakdowns from POM? I’m very happy you’re doing this. Always thought you were the best of the bunch.

For the over 100,000 Jayhawk fans in the KC Metro area and for all of you west of Salina to the Colorado border, here’s what we missed last night. The short version.

  • Good stuff on this page today, and good to see @Jesse_Newell here.

A couple things that really stood out to me -

    1. Black is just woefully ineffective right now. But this is still a small sample size. Even though we had some lower expectations based on the Memphis stats, this is below that baseline. So perhaps he’ll step it up.

    2. Though I do subscribe to the “temper the expectations” thought process as kD noted, it’s really, really hard regarding Embiid. As I’ve posted before, he is the key to our assent this season. He seems like the guy that could transform us into a great team.

    3. I’m not negative on Frankamp. It’s just hard for me to see him fitting as part of the rotation now. The way I see this is that Self just doesn’t know what he wants to do. Look at the boxscore – Only 5 guys played 20 minutes or more. Mason, 13, Traylor 10, Black 9, White 8, Frankamp 10. Rotation minutes, in my mind, are appx. 13 per game. We know Mason is in the rotation, and Black starts. That’s 7. While it seems that Self is expanding, he’s really contracting. The comment about playing Frankamp because Green was out may be right on there, and Self complimented CF. But where is this rotation going as we move forward? White only played 8 minutes against Iona. It seems like he’s being shut out of this, too. Again, this was Iona and we have 6 guys with rotation level minutes? Heading into the game, my hunch was that Greene was moving to the front of the pack in the White/Frankamp/Greene battle, but then he didn’t play for the vague reasons noted. The best explanation is that Self is just trying to figure out what he wants to do, and isn’t sure yet.

  • Welcome Jesse. Look forward to reading you again.

  • Back to the game and some assorted observations.

Embiid will be starting from here on. when Blackis in the game, the team seems to play at a much slower tempo; with him on the bench I noticed a much faster tempo.

Traylor’s motor is a two edged sword, it can make him very good or if he cannot control it, not so goo.

Frankamp’s defense was a nice surprise. There was lot of talk that he was a 'gunner" that would not be able to play Div. defense. Now we know he can.

Am I the only one that thinks that Mason was taking too many shoots? He was constantly penetrating and taking contested shots; although in all fairness, he was drawing fouls. Ideally, he should penetrate and if he does not draw the defense take it to the house, but if he draws the defense, she should pass to whoever is open for an easy two.

Wiggins is the silkiest player ever. He contributes in so many ways and sometimes you cannot even tell he is in the game. He will be the silent assassin.

This is by far the deepest team we have had in a long time; In addition to the five starters we have at least 5 other players that would star for any team in the conference. It is a tough job for Coach Self to spread the available minutes among that many deserving players.

Regardless of what Mr. Zenger says, the current contract still sucks. Having to troll for an internet stream is infuriating and frustrating and the quality of the available stream often not good.

  • Sorry if someone mentioned this … I understand that you can get the ESPN 3 stream in the KC area if you have ATT Uverse by downloading Google chrome, and getting an “extension.” I apologize, I’m not a computer dude. But that extension will allow you to get the signal as it makes it appear that your IP address is out of this area. You then connect your laptop to your TV with an HDMI cable. Just what I heard …

  • Dang it!! Another game I couldn’t watch. I mean, come on! This is stupid. I listened to the game on 105.9 and honestly the commentary from our two local guys is pretty good sometimes. But, how many more games am I going to miss on tv?

I posted a working link prior to the game. Not the greatest quality but watchable. We need to have a section prior to each game that is no widely available where links can be posted, so all of us that are blacked out can find a viable option.

  • We need to have a section prior to each game that is no widely available where links can be posted, so all of us that are blacked out can find a viable option.

I think there were discussions in the KU Buckets Chat last night regarding this topic. That’s a good area for that topic as the transcript is not saved.

I have tried all the possible combinations with Surewest but I could not get it to work since Surewest is blacked out and regardless of what IP you have, you provider still shows. It could be because Surewest has subscribers only in the KC are a and a small base in California. Maybe, since ATT has a national presence, it is not blacked out as a provider but only through the IP.

Surewest is now called Consolidated Communications and has a larger footprint. I tried using their portal last time but it would not allow me with my Surewest login; I was told I need to talk to Consolidated tech. support to get access to their portal. I will try it for the next game.

  • Yes, I thought Mason shot too much - I was expecting him to dish a bit more.

  • Regarding ESPN3, I don’t know if the blackout is based on the IP address of the device or where the ATT Uverse account is located. I live in Wisconsin and I don’t have any cable TV subscription, but do have Internet service. I have a Xbox and also Xbox Live Gold, and my son is at Madison and has ATT Uverse. So I add ESPN app on the Xbox, and had my son validate the code that links the Xbox Live account to my son’s Uverse account. I don’t have to have his login info, but simply gave him the code. Once he validates the code on ATT, my Xbox live is granted access to ESPN. And I’m able to watch ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 on the Xbox. I don’t know if it makes any difference if I were in Kansas since my local IP would be in Kansas, not in Wisconsin. Just thought I’d mention it.

  • Speaking of internet coverage, did anybody else outside of the ESPN blackout area have trouble watching the last 5-10 minutes of the game online? I got way too many frozen screens those last few minutes (even after several reboots), and it’s far from the first time. Just wondering if it’s ESPN or my ISP…

  • I’ve been watching in Texas. It happens to me, but not that often. Maybe two or three times a game.

About the ESPN3 blackout for commercials. Sure would be nice to hear commentators rather than no sound at all. Or maybe they could scroll other scores across the screen.

  • I watched on justin.tv and didn’t have any trouble. I’m one of the suckers who paid for Full Court only to find out the games are blacked out in SE Kansas.

  • @wrwlumpy Yep, that’s the plan. Actually, @bskeet linked to the Pom preview from the Iona game above.

  • The whole “greene slamming doors” rumor posted on KUsports.com stemmed from the night he went to the hospital. I forgot if it was on that site or Rivals, but people reported hearing doors slamming in AFH right around that time.

Zero clue if the door-slamming was Greene or related to his injury situation somehow, but that’s where the rumor came from initially.

Also - great to see Jesse here. In addition to adding the TCJ to my list of news spots to go to, I’m looking forward to potential Q&A here!

  • @milehighhawk : My wife asked me if I’d read anywhere if Greene was hurt. I didn’t know about the rumored hospital visit, slammed doors. The reason she asked was because she thought he was holding his hand funny and was messing with it like it was bothering him. I’m blind as a bat so I couldn’t even see where Greene was at… HA!

The ESPN3 blackout is only for the State of Kansas and the Kansas City Metro Area, hence the irritation by Kansans all over the state; it is probably a combination of provider and IP. ESPN3 should not be blacked out in Wisconsin and you should have no problem accessing ESPN3; this is pretty much what the live feed providers are doing, broadcasting the ESPN3 feed that is not blocked to them.

  • Moving forward… we should consider a proper format to maximize the opportunity to connect with Jesse.

We need Approx to jump in on this, too.

I’m sure many of you will have good ideas.

Right off the bat, I was thinking maybe we could start a thread and it has an agreed “post time” when Jesse could attend live. If the thread is up for a few days prior, posters could already post some questions for him. I’m thinking a Q&A format.

It would be nice if Jesse could post replies directly below the questions.

    Is that possible, Approx?

If this format works well, perhaps we can do these on a regular basis… depending on how much time Jesse will donate. In return, we should help him in his efforts at http://cjonline.com.

If everyone wants to be fanatically involved… we can do a Q&A before each game and then segue directly into Jesse’s CoverItLive page. Perhaps Jesse will write something here or at cjonline before each game and that would also help get the questions rolling.

This is just an idea, and I know I’m game for any method of doing this.

I’m excited to have this opportunity and we can all learn a lot from picking Jesse’s brain.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. No, I have no problem watching the games.

I was simply speculating whether ESPN3 decides to block the program based your device’s IP address. It sounds like it is based on your local IP. So what I was thinking won’t work.

We need Approx to jump in on this, too.

I’m sure many of you will have good ideas.

@drgnslayr-Is there a way to direct message approx. with this idea? If not you may just begin a new thread on the matter that others will see & perhaps get some theory & momentum initiated.

  • It might not be that’s simple. His contract may prevent him from participating, other than casually, in forums not related to the Topeka CJ. Hopefully this forum is not considered competition and he can contribute more extensively here; I believe it would benefit both parties. He has access to information we don’t and we provide an audience that would expand his coverage.

  • Was I mistaken, or did we move the ball like seasoned vets on the first possession of the game and then we regressed? It’s no surprise whatsoever that Perry is the go to guy. Embiid reminded me of a young Hakeem…who was pretty raw when he started out. The Defense was pretty bad…you have to believe that we will improve a lot the season moves along. When you combine the great attitudes that Selden and Wiggins have combined with HCBS’s track record…no question it will get a lot better. I am also surprised at how few minutes White is getting. The fact that Self is playing Mason and Tharpe at the same time is cutting in to his minutes. If that combo continues, neither White nor Greene will see that much action.

  • Hi there @Jesse_Newell! Great seeing you here. Love the idea of Q&A sessions and I’d be happy to hop over to CJ with whomever else wants to check out the live chat for the next game, if everyone is on board. I’d like to see what the format of the chat looks like, and was wondering if it would be cool if we cut and paste the chat log after its done on our board, with a link back to the original chat if you have it on your site. In addition, maybe you could take the Q&A sessions with us and post it over on the CJ if that makes sense for you.

Really excited to buddy up, and I’ve been thinking about how to automate the story postings here to update with links to stories on targeted sites in real time. It’s probably a longshot, but you guys don’t have a public API for that by chance do you?

@drgnslayr I really like your ideas on the Q&A format. I don’t know what level of effort Jesse will be able to put in right prior to the games, so I don’t know if we want to timebox it in that regard, but I do like the idea of building up a list of questions, and Jesse can cherry pick the ones he thinks yield the most intriguing responses. i do see your point that is he has the time to do so, before the game might be great as it would feed into the conversation of the game.

As for Jesse responding right below each comment, I’m beefing up my ability to modify the site, but this particular change is not going to happen fast – I’ve now built my linux virtual box, and today I researched and installed extensions that will help me develop in node js, and I’ve been looking around in the nodebb solution beyond the layout elements, but there will be a learning curve, and time and effort restrictions for me. So, trying to set realistic expectations. I do intend to try to nest comments, but it will probably take a while to get there, because that is a philosophical shift from everything the board currently does around notifying / updating threads, and I want to be careful.

That being said, I think we can alleviate confusion on what he is responding to if Jesse uses @ to address people, and the quote button on the left of the reply to reiterate the question. If he does this answers after an accumulation of questions from which he cherry picks, I think it might be easier for him to write a few more consolidated posts. This might be a more relaxed approach for Jesse, but I’d like to hear what @Jesse_Newell thinks about the format too.

  • Hey approx- A few things …

I don’t think you need to reinvent the wheel for a Q&A. I’d say just create a new thread, call it “Jesse Q&A” or whatever, then I can come at a set time and answer some of them with the quote function for a half hour or so. Maybe we could do that at 6 tomorrow, then at the end, I could provide a link to the game blog?

As far as sharing content … I think linking will work best for legal issues on both ends. For tomorrow at least, I can link back to the Q&A on your site to our live blog for anyone interested.

I’m checking on the public API for you.

Here’s a link to the last live blog. I think it has some neat features, but it’d definitely be a lot more fun with some familiar names in it.

  • Been told no API, but here’s an RSS feed for our KU stuff:

    http://cjonline.com/rssfeed/44/media/fulltext

  • Hey @Jesse_Newell I just updated your post to make the links clickable. Thanks.

  • @Jesse_Newell Thanks for the follow up Jesse. Sounds great. I started the thread for Q&A. Will check out the links you sent tonight.

  • I can confirm the extension trick works if you have a comcast login for espn 3 as well
