Big 12 Snubbed
-
It seems our 10 team league presented two one loss teams and they weren’t good enough to make this new 4 team playoff. Does anybody care?
I know we are all big basketball fans but man this is a punch to the gut for our conference and our future.
I’m afraid if our conference is snubbed again in the next couple years. Two things will happen
- The Big 12 will expand
2 The Big 12 will disband (as in every man for himself).
-
The Big 12 Commissioner was in the Mike and Mike show on ESPN yesterday and indicated that a proposal has been submitted allowing conferences with less than 12 teams to have a Championship game. He also indicated that it will consider expanding to 12 teams. The Big 12 will not disband any time soon as it is very profitable and the schools get more money than just about every other conference and the new upcoming contract should make the payout even better. I personally think 10 teams id the perfect number of teams for a conference; schools play all others schools in football plus 3 non-con games, and home and away games against every other school in basket ball with enough games left to built a solid non-con schedule.
There was a lot of controversy why a team that the previous week was ranked 3, wins huge and drops to #6. Yes, not having a Championship game hurt the Big 12, but had a couple of the top 4 teams lost on Saturday, the Big 12 could have ended up with 2 teams in the playoffs. Had this happened, and probabilities says that it will likely happen in the future, then the Big 12 would look like geniuses.
I was talking with a friend in Ohio and he said…the Big 12 should have told KSU to do what Wisconsin did for the Big 10, bend over and take one for the conference; with a close win, Ohio State does not jump to #4. I personally do not think Wisconsin would do that, but a conspiracy specialist, such as @jaybate might want to look into it. Also, the question was asked to the selection committee head…if the two Big 12 teams would have been Texas and Oklahoma, instead of Baylor and TCU, would the result have been different? Obviously he indicated that it would have not been any different but one has to wonder, don’t you think?

Mack Brown was also asked this and he indicated that the names make a difference. He said he had seen preferential treatment given to Texas first hand when he was coaching there.

@JayHawkFanToo good news!!!

Is @JayHawkFanToo a conspiracy specialist smear artist?
Or is @JayHawkFanToo a conspiracy specialist smear specialist?
Repeat after me: @jaybate 1.0 says conspiracies and conspiracy smear specialists are for suckers.

@jaybate-1.0 = warm and fuzzy good humor.
@jaybate 1.0 = love of game.

Conspiracy specialist smear specialists back fill here.

Mack Brown’s quote appears to make clear there is no illegal conspiracy involved; that this stuff goes on above board and quite legally, whether fair or not. Slavery wasn’t fair. But it wasn’t a conspiracy. It was immorally legal.
Illegal conspiracy rarely explains anything truly widespread.
This just how teams are picked. Sometimes who you are matters without a conspiracy. It ain’t fair, and maybe it ought to be changed. But change is scary for those benefitting from the unfairness.
This is why everyone has to get away from the notion of illegal conspiracies as explainations of wide spread phenomena. It deters us from truth and action…
Illegal conspiracies just aren’t relevant to explain most of this sports phenomena that board rats do not like.
Illegal conspiracies are for smearing anyone that calls attention to the inequities of a regime of order.
Illegal conspiracies are for suckers. Ask Richard Nixon.

This is important.
By missing out on a playoff team, the Big 12 lost out on about $6m, or about $400k per school after the participating team and the conference get their cut. That’s not a small loss. $400k is enough to almost entirely fund a smaller program in the athletic department (tennis, golf, etc.).
This is almost entirely related to the teams being TCU and Baylor. If OU were involved, they would have gotten in. There’s no way Ohio State would have leapfrogged a one loss Oklahoma. But the committee choosing between TCU, Ohio State or Baylor went with the brand name.
The Big 12 has to make a statement in the bowl games. TCU gets Ole Miss, an SEC team. TCU needs to put about 60 points on the board. Don’t keep it close. Don’t leave any doubt. Run it up as far as you can against the mighty SEC.
Baylor gets Michigan State. Oregon beat Michigan State by 19. That means Baylor needs to beat them by at least 24 to make sure everybody knows that they are a strong team.
West Virginia gets former Big 12 member (and current SEC member) A&M. WVU needs to get a win here. They don’t have to score a million points, but they need to beat A&M.
Texas gets Arkansas and Texas absolutely must win. Other than TCU and Baylor, this is the matchup that the Big 12 most needs to do well in. Arkansas is a weaker SEC program. If Texas doesn’t beat them (because Texas is a name program even though they are probably the 6th or 7th best team in the Big 12) the Big 12 looks bad. Horns must get the job done.
K-State faces UCLA again. This matchup is a very good matchup for the Cats. UCLA can’t overwhelm them with talent, so they should be able to hang in and squeak out the W.
Oklahoma vs. Clemson, OU has to show up. Much like Texas, OU is the name school in football, so the Sooners have to demonstrate that they can take down a team from a weaker conference (ACC).
Oklahoma State and Washington’s get together is a matchup of two teams with disappointing seasons. It’d be nice for OSU to win.
Heck, it would be great if the Big 12 went 7-0, but I doubt everybody wins. As long as TCU, Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma win, it can be considered a pretty solid bowl season. Either K-State or West Virginia notching a win would do wonders for the national perception. The most important thing (besides getting 4 or 5 wins) is to make sure that nobody gets blown out. And hope that the Big 10 does a collective thud in the bowls - Baylor can help that by destroying Michigan State.

The payout does not work quite that way. The money that is divvied up by the conference members is the money left AFTER the participating school deducts expenses. When you consider that Bowls are basically junkets, the majority of the Bowl payoff is used by the school attending and not as much is left to divide, particularly with the smaller bowls. If I remember correctly, KU used up just about the entire payout when it went to the Orange Bowl. Big programs that will take 200-300 people in chartered jets and will stay at top hotels for several day will use up the money in a hurry.
The main benefit of the major bowls is exposure for the team and conference; a huge tool in recruiting.
-
@justanotherfan Just curious - where did you find the $6M figure? It seems like we (KU / Big IIV) got about $17M for the Orange Bowl.
Maybe I’ve forgotten. I don’t know what I had for breakfast this morning. Crap - did I have breakfast this morning?
-
“He also indicated that it will consider expanding to 12 teams”
Now that Louisville and Florida State are out of the picture… I bet we can still land Appalachian State University, if we can steal them away from the Sun Belt!
-
Be careful with what you wish…I keep getting deeper into your head, aren’t I?
In the mean time have fun with this…
-
I will add another benefit that rarely gets mentioned. A bowl team continues practicing when we (non-bowl teams) season is over. So while it doesn’t seem like a lot, but take a team and give it another month of practice every year and it will consistently get better than those not practicing.
Our season is done, they are still working on things as a team.
-
The payouts for some bowl games have gone up dramatically over the last few years; more than I imagined. The payout for the playoff bowls are huge. On the other hand, the payout for the smaller bowls might not even cover the school’s expenses.
Here is a link to each bowl payout.

@JayHawkFanToo Oooooooh. We should have jerseys like this!!
-
Regarding the Big 12, the biggest mistake we made was not adding Louisville. Add Louisville and any of the others discussed … BYU, Houston, Cincinnati, whatever … and all issues solved. Louisville would have been the perfect BB add as well. But of course, we might not have to discuss winning 10 conference titles in a row, which would be an added benefit.
-
I agree. And toilet paper too.
Maybe @approxinfinity could work that into the wall paper for the site.
It reminds me of the champagne bubble lead in to the old Lawrence Welk show.
Could it be?
@JayHawkFanToo is Lawrence Welk!
-
@jaybate-1.0 you trying to get me in trouble? Nothing moves, no one gets hurt. (I’ll do it on a down day)
-
It’s like a nightmare, isn’t it? It just keeps getting worse and worse. - Grady Season, The color of money.
BTW, Lawrence Welk is your generation, not mine.

@HighEliteMajor Ugh…if you only knew how completely pissed off I get about the Louisville fiasco, you would’ve avoided the subject all together. He, he. I am still sick to my stomach over the decision to tell Louie to hit the road. I hate the Big 12 because of that. All you Big 12 lovers, put away your pom poms - it won’t work with me. That was the single worst decision that I ever seen. Can you imagine the home and home with Louisville? What that would’ve done for our conference, specifically in basketball, would’ve been HUGE. And hey, their football program is real good as well. I hope we leave this conference at our earliest opportunity, maybe with the Kitties…maybe to the Big Ten. Honestly, to willingly be puppets of Texas turns my stomach - to put our World famous program in the hands of people who obviously could care less about basketball - like I said, it turns my stomach.

Howling!

-
But I really do love you, @JayHawkFanToo.
Really.

Your outta your depth. You’ll have to trust me on this.
You are right, I am not used to the shallow end, that is for little kids and old farts…your kind of depth.
