2020 Recruiting
-
Juco 4 star Prospect Tyon Grant-Foster is visiting KU this weekend.
Eric Bossi had this to say recently about him:
I know that Scrubb has been given the title of best prospect in the Junior College ranks, but do-it-all wing Tyon Grant-Foster of Ottumwa (Iowa) Indiana Hills has to be in the conversation as well. A native of Kansas City, Kans., Grant-Foster is extremely versatile, athletic and still developing physically. There’s a good reason that he’s now racked up offers from Georgia, Kansas, Iowa State, LSU, Miami, Oklahoma State, Oregon, SMU, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and others.
Bossi also says the Juco ranks this season is the deepest he’s seen in a while.
-
@BeddieKU23 I can’t tell you how excited I am at the prospect of snagging JUCO players. I am now experiencing much the same giddiness that a UTSA or Southern Illinois fan must feel upon hearing such news.
-
Sometimes you find good ones but I get the sarcasm built in your comment.
Recruiting Juco’s and developmental type players is the result of recruiting the Billy Preston’s of the world. KU’s rep on the recruiting circuit has hit a big speed bump for now
-
@BeddieKU23 I would suggest, perhaps, that this new necessity is of Bill Self’s creation, as this entire scandal and issue sits at his doorstep, in my opinion.
I keep going back to his words last fall -
“As the leader of the Kansas men’s basketball program, I take pride in my role to operate with integrity and within the NCAA rules, which is a fundamental responsibility of being the head basketball coach.”
We would not be in this spot if Self followed his stated expectations.
-
We wouldn’t have a functional basketball team without playing the shoe game so there is that too.
As far as JUCOs go in general I’d take this kid and Mading for sure. Wrap up Gethro and KK Robinson and I think that is about as good a class as we can hope for.
-
Who was the last JC kid that made a impact on college basketball? At KU Mario Little was a good player, but there are just not many at all that go on too become even decent players.
I understand the situation that KU is in, but even with that this is pretty concerning to me.

Shakur Juiston, Pierre Jackson, Jae Crowder, Jimmy Butler.
These are outliers but it can be done. I think it’s more likely we get cogs out of JUCO, not stars.
-
@BShark Those are some good examples.
Does anyone know if you can look up where these two kids were ranked coming out of HS? Just wondering if they were even legit prospects before JC…

I go back to my prior point - If we seem to know that shoe companies pay kids (the shoeco game), that it’s such common knowledge, then Bill Self knows. Bill Self has clearly and distinctly denied any such knowledge. That would make Bill Self a liar of a quite high degree. Add to it the “integrity” comment by Self and then the “honesty and integrity” comment by Long. It is just reprehensible.
And, as we stand here, we’re talking about JUCO kids at KU. Tyrone Appleton is my hero, though, so maybe it’s not all bad.
-
Mading was #393 coming out of HS, signed with Rhode Island, left shortly after.
Foster was unranked in the 2018 class.
-
@Woodrow I know Mading was. The other kid I think was unranked but there are other factors there such as the services quit evaluating kids once it is known they won’t qualify. I need to see what I can find out about him. I know Oregon, LSU, ISU and TAMU all offered as well combined with what I’ve seen there is something there to his game. Biggest issue is his jumper.
-
Who was the hutch Juco kid, long time ago, Ben ?
-
Juco’s definitely have a low success rate. Foster has a lot of High Major attention so its not just KU that wants him. It is unusual for KU to have to go this route but we all know why that’s happening this recruiting cycle. Foster is intriguing with his size and skills. From a numbers perspective KU will need them and really can’t pick and choose to the standard they were accustomed to

as for me - - like you say because of the way things are - - -I would really like to be able to land Mading - think he pretty solid - -Now I don’t want to over due or anything but to think Juco’s is a plague - -is just crazy - - lots of really good Juco’s and can really help during certain times. Give me some examples of JUCO guys that make solid contributions for blue blood programs or typical top 10 teams … I just don’t see it. You don’t have to. I get your point that casting all JUCO guys as low tier isn’t reality.
However, I’m just bitter right now with where we are at. As @BeddieKU23 said, we needing to fill roster spots.
We’ve struggled recruiting anyway. We’ve continued to play second fiddle for a number of seasons – supposedly when we, er, Adidas, was paying guys.

@Crimsonorblue22 it was Ben Davis

I’m not sharp enough to remember Juco Names from times past - - yet I do know that there have been some pretty solid players from Juco - -could be wrong but wasn’t Larry Johnson a juco that played for UNLV ? - - seems to me he was a pretty dam solid Juco - -doesn’t have to just be Blue Bloods.
Do I prefer Juco ? - -hell no I don’t, - I agree with you to a point that I do am umm disappointed with where were at - - wouldn’t say bitter - -pretty much just saying seeing as where were at - -were at then myself if there is a Juco that can help the program and I fully believe the ones being discussed here CAN help the program - -then I’m not going to turn my back just because they are Juco. - -As a Coach I’m going to take the talent that I have available that can help in our current situation.
-
Juco recruits at Blue Bloods or perennial Top 10 teams is almost non-existent so there’s very little data to even discuss such occurrences. If you expand the discussion to Power 5, you’ll get at least a handful every year that make contributions or become key players in the right situations.
If your not in trouble (like KU is currently) they could recruit at a level we expect from this staff. I understand the optics of this- the “sky is falling” because we’re getting slapped around by the FBI/NCAA right now that we have to look at Juco’s just to potentially fill spots.
Personally I didn’t think we’d get anyone on campus after the NOA came, much less have a chance to sign 1-3 guys in the fall (regardless of their rank, talent). I have to give the staff credit if they close on some guys this fall despite the issues facing them.
If the evaluators are right about this years JUCO kids there may be a few outliers in the bunch. Louisville just got a commitment from arguably the top JUCO guard in the Country instead of going all in on Some Top 100 HS kids they were definitely in contention for.

“He is recruiting me to come be a starter if I work and said that if I work there’s no reason I won’t be able to play 25 or 30 minutes a game.”
That’s um, that’s something.

I could be wrong about this - - BUT when reading what he has to say , when they are asking him about his next steps - -he says he is not sure will have to see about setting up more visits - -whether he NEEDS to set up more visits after visiting Ku & Iowa State- -my 1st thought on that is - -almost sounds like if things goes well with those two visits - -then these are the two he will decide between Ku & Iowa St - -might be nuts but kind of sounds like that to me anyways - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Kentucky getting involved with Mading. He probably sucks tho.
whispers I don’t think he is a great fit for Bill in all seriousness. I also don’t think Kentucky would really press him for a commit but we will see.

To play devil’s advocate, we most certainly live in an “ends justify the means” world, and “today’s pirates are tomorrow’s admirals”
Also, we complained bitterly about Self’s unwillingness to adapt earlier in his time at Kansas, playing guys that we didnt think had the ceiling to deserve PT. If I recall, this might roughly correspond to his time playing the likes of Jamari, Landen, Morningstar etc major minutes. Well, he complained about the system, complained about east coast media bias, and then… He adapted! Just had to “get a few dudes”.
-
@approxinfinity Speaking of adapting he talked about playing a zone to stay big this year. Billy Self playin’ zone. What a time to be alive.
-
He’s more or less a 6’10 guard. I think your right about fit.

Are things gonna get this bad?

Half wondering if this is related to Gethro as well.

This Bad ? - - so what’s the story with this kid?
-
So here is what I would like to see if possible for commits NOW. lol
So if we could get these four all things considered - -I’d be good. - -Land KK Robinson , - - Foster , - - Mading - -& Brown/Ferguson stated that KU had told him if we got Todd & Mading - -probably wouldn’t be good to come - - - Well Todd isn’t Coming Sooooo , he re-classifies like he says is probably going to happen , then welcome aboard - -land those 4 we bwe good - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Wide net. Potential walk on.
-
@FarmerJayhawk Any idea on when Gethro will announce? It looks like he has taken 4 OV and doesn’t have anymore scheduled…
I know we are not going to get any “elite” players this year, but it would be nice to get someone on board and try to get some sort of momentum.
-
@Woodrow pretty sure he’ll sign in the fall. But as far as specific timing, he hasn’t announced anything yet and nobody in KU’s orbit really knows either as far as I can tell.
-
Scott Chasen wrote an article about Aiden Shaw’s visit but it’s VIP. Can anyone tell us what it’s about please
-
90% sure Bryce Thompson has eliminated Kansas. I think OU with UNC on the outskirts. I’ll keep asking about KU until I know it’s not us. But I the NCAA cloud is doing some bad things to us right now on the trial. Not exactly breaking news, but the consequences become more real for each kid we miss on.
-
This should surprise no one. Cannot blame the kid
-
Maybe a good sign concerning Grant-Foster and KU as Iowa St picked up a Top 150 Small Forward yesterday.
Davion Bradford expectedly picked Kansas St
Oklahoma St recently lost their Top 100 PG who probably has seen all the Cunningham press and bolted

KSU is currently one over now I believe. Hilarious they think they might still get Gethro. Not saying he is 100% coming to KU but if he does go elsewhere I do not see it being KSU when Memphis and Louisville are recruiting him too.
I at least haven’t seen many KSU fans claiming Bradford as a win over KU when KU never offered and the visit felt like keeping the new found good relationship with MOKAN going.
KSU has a great class for them. #11 in the country on 247 but that won’t hold up. Still a very solid class, the after effects of a good tournament run followed by sharing the league title.
Looks like ISU is still recruiting in the 150-300 range. I can’t really doubt them though with how good Haliburton and Conditt look. Their evaluation game seems strong. Wouldn’t surprise me if they took him knowing Grant-Foster is leaning heavily towards KU. He could easily be KU’s first commit in this class.
-
Gethro taking another unofficial to Louisville. Second in two weeks. Seems like they lead for him.
-
Aspire is in Louisville tbf. They could land him but there isn’t a ton of smoke currently. It would be a rough miss after not offering Bradford.
-
KU, KSU, Louisville and Tech looking like his final four.
-
Well Crap , been ALOT of smoke going on - - looks more justified now - - smoke saying Cunningham IS NOT going to land at Okie St - -looks like might have some substance.
Evan Daniels just put in a CB for Cunningham to who else - - -Kentucky. - they are going to be just insanely loaded - - AGAIN , if this turns out - BUT the last couple of years - - Duke has been pretty loaded , didn’t win any Championship - that’s why they play the games -still fricken crazy. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Okie Lite is out on Cade. UK or UNC, but likely UK. Bryce is OU or UNC, likely OU.

I think there’s a few bodies that will move on from Weber’s team as always. Nobody wants to listen to that pip-squeak
ISU has to be done at wing since they have a sit-out transfer that will likely start next year. I think the Blackwell commitment was foreshadowing of KU’s chances with Grant-Foster.

Wow.

Would seem like Lock City for Cunningham to UK after Evan put his pick in.
The have’s and the have-not’s are really starting to show now… KU is trending in the latter

@BeddieKU23 And the irony of that as it relates to “Shoe Money” is just maddening.
