RJ Hampton

  • If they don’t get drafted they can come back, right?

  • I still fully expect Grimes to follow through on the draft.

However, with the new rule can’t he return to school if he goes undrafted?

  • I think it’s fairly likely Dotson goes pro at this point. If he comes back I think we could squeeze in RJ and Jalen. Start all three if you have to promise Jalen a starting spot to get him wouldn’t be the end of the world.

@Kcmatt7 Well you also have to be welcomed back.

  • @BShark Lol.

If DD goes, are we running RJ at PG?

  • Yes.

    Yes.

We need another guard still for next year though. I’d guess Kyree Walker ends up a Jayhawk too then if DD is gone.

We would need bodies but adding another starter level guy would be a hard sell/tough pull.

  • You think rj doesn’t want d dot?

  • @BShark What’s the rotation in your mind rn?

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

I don’t think it’s a huge issue. It’s just both DD and Grimes can’t return. I just think Dotson himself is leaning towards going. If he is going to get drafted in the first round he has to go. This is a super weak draft, it’s his best chance.

@Kcmatt7 In that situation it’s RJ, Garrett, Ochai, Wilson, McBride. I can see where you and I would be worried but adding Walker would be hard. He’d see RJ and Wilson as sure fire starters and Self LOVES Garrett and isn’t far behind with Ochai.

  • I wonder if rj’s dad is trying to get penny up to dollars?

If that’s the case, good God RJ better be the next D-Rose.

  • @Kcmatt7 I’ve got good news for you.

  • The feeling around the program is Dotson is coming back. He’s not a first rounder and most scouts are saying he should go back to school. It would take some gymnastics to bring Grimes back.

And that helps with RJ. He’s a guy that likes to play with other really good players and win.

Well this is great to read. I was seeing a lot of first round stuff floating around. Dotson + RJ + Wilson is lethal.

  • D dot looked good against weak combine guys(grimes), not 1 3. Gotta work on shot, not gonna get those layups against the big boys. He’s much smarter than most too. He will improve!

    @dylans

I think the issue is he didn’t qualify to transfer and use the grad-transfer route which would have allowed him to go to Memphis. If that’s the case I think KU’s out as well.

not necessarily - -like they say he still has time to get finished up over the summer - not overly concerned at this point

  • FarmerJayhawk said:

Memphis isn’t getting RJ. Not enough ball to go around with Boogie in the fold.

he is not going to Memphis - -I am just not seeing that anymore

The thing that sticks to me is - - -RJ has stated that he DOESN’T necessarily have to be Point , he doesn’t have to have the ball in his hands all the time , more or less could play the 2 spot which I think that is where they have told him anyways - -he stated he just wants to play around other great players, BUT him and Devon could inner change - -or also they COULD move Devon to the 2nd if they thought that’s what truly needed to be done to fit RJ. - Let RJ play the point and Devon the 2 or visa versa - it can work.

Now if Devon sticks in the NBA like you have mentioned that he might - -then obviously RJ just slips right in no big deal - - -I just really think with Jalen visiting on the 30th and now RJ’S dad talking about RJ possibly visiting KU the same weekend - him and Jalen at the same time , there just might be something more going on there then what we might think. - I think those two very easily could visit the same weekend and then BOTH commit very soon afterwards. - -To me Jalen making the statement that Lawrence better be ready - there might be a hidden message in there - with him and RJ so tight , Jalen saying RJ is his right hand man - -his guy - I’m just thinking - -not happening for Memphis - could be totally off - -but I don’t think so - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

YEP - -Like I just stated RJ has said he DOESN’T have to run point - he can slide in at the 2 - what a awesome take - -basically have 2 point guards on the floor at the same time , with RJ’S ball handling and passing - he said he just wants to play with or be surrounded with other really good players - I just really don’t think it’s as much a problem as some think.

RJ could and still see plenty of time running the point - I think we land Jalen for sure will be enough to push RJ over the edge for us - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Giving you a hard time for asking 214 why he uses all caps.

  • I would LOVE to have both of these guys! My only concern would be that I hope they check their egos at the door when they come to KU. Nothing wrong with being highly ranked, highly confident, and wanting minutes or to play with your buddy, but this is a team sport AND this is Kansas! Anyone else have that concern?

still lost - -understand kind of playing but I’m lost what did say that was bad - -I was curious only to why he is always using all caps all the time. - All caps means they are yelling

Nothing you said was bad or out of line. Just a bit of kidding around. Always appreciate your info and thoughts, which really add a lot here.

*Also, I think that’s just his style … all caps. If he did all lower case now, would that be whispering? I would think so.

  • And really, in the big business that is college basketball (and it is a business) if I were the coach I would not allow the program to be taken hostage by the NBA draft. If they declare they go, as simple as that.

I can appreciate that sentiment but I think I’d want most of my guys back, even if they declare. At least this way, you hope they get honest feedback and don’t leave. Like lets say Dotson comes back. What if he had declared and couldn’t come back even after slipping out of the first round? I’d much rather have another year of Dotson. I’d also much rather have Q test the waters and see if someone else wants to take a gamble on him.

Honesty is the best policy here.

  • @Marco Why are you sure he is not coming back?

  • Marco said:

While your thought is attractive from a purist standpoint, I would guess such an approach might dissuade almost every player with NBA aspirations from coming our way. I think coaches have to put on a false face of support sometimes when guys test the waters under these new rules.

  • If a guy wants to test, more power to him. Self can’t coach the guys now anyway, so might as well have them go get some structured competition and get feedback on their game from another source.

  • @FarmerJayhawk and that’s exactly what he wanted to do!

  • Can you only declare twice? Or is that restriction gone now?

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

Exactly! And good luck getting people to work for you if you fire them if you have the gall to just go interview somewhere else. I used to write letters for my interns all the time. If they got a better gig before their internship was up I’d tell them to take it or I’d fire them myself for being morons 😂

  • @Hawk8086 I think he’s going to be a late first round pick.

  • @HighEliteMajor Kentucky seems to do it just fine.

  • @Marco I don’t know what you mean by Kentucky. They have players withdraw from the draft and return. Had one last season.

The difference, of course, being that your interns went to those other gigs and you knew that they would, and they were immediately if not sooner replaced. Whereas with the new rules that have been put in place programs can be held hostage by players who are not ready but are trying to interview for positions that they may or may not get. Meanwhile, how many scholarships do we have to fill? And can we? There is the flaw…

  • @HighEliteMajor not many. I think Cal replaces them, basically saying, “sorry, it didn’t work out for you. Your scholarship has been taken.”

  • I sort of expect Jalen and RJ to just stay in Lawrence.

Not always. Depending on the time of year it could be a month or 6 weeks before someone could step in. Self, like I did, encourages these guys to test the waters. How can he encourage them to test and not know if they actually did? That makes no sense. KU isn’t being held hostage by anyone. Self has a really good idea who’s staying and who’s coming back. He wouldn’t even take Grimes back if he knew it would chase away Hampton and/or Wilson. I doubt we fill them all. By my count, we have 3 left to give assuming we get Silvio and Dotson back. Adding Hampton and Wilson would mean we use 12. FR: McBride, Braun, Enaruna, (Hampton, Wilson) SO: Dotson, Agbaji, McCormack JR: DeSousa, Garrett SR: Lightfoot, Udoka

  • The fact that RJ wants to accompany Jalen on his visit tells me all I need to know about RJ’s intentions.

RJ has already visited KU multiple times. To me, the most plausible explanation for him making this visit with Jalen is because he wants to recruit him to join him at KU. RJ is sold on KU and he wants to try to sell it to Jalen as well.
