How did the Chiefs do in the draft?

  • As an outsider looking in, wondering if you guys who follow the Chiefs closely are happy with the draft results?

  • @approxinfinity Will let you know February 3, 2020.

  • @approxinfinity seems like most fans are happy

  • 1st rounder All Pro DE starter

2nd rounders -2 starters -receiver and safety

    3rd rounder - rotational D line guy

    Hard to complain.

  • B-ish. Had to reach on Hardman because of the Hill situation.

  • @BShark I wonder why they liked him so much better than Parris Campbell? The prognosticators like Parris better, but Veach trades up to get his guy. Usually when he trades up it has ended up pretty good - Mahomes and Hunt come to mind.

He has unreal speed and they think they can turn him into a football player.

The one pick I absolutely love is Darwin Thompson. I get that RBs basically aren’t valued at all now but this guy is going to contribute year one imo which is nuts for a 6th rounder.

Thornhill should start immediately, like that pick as well.

  • @BShark I keep reading that Mechole is a burner with a small catch radius. Parris ran the 40 in the exact same 4.33 time. Maybe he plays faster than his 40 time. I didn’t notice the cone drill time. That’s what killed DK Metcalf. Super stiff.

Yeah that’s going to be the player that is always right there to be compared with Hardman. Campbell is much more of a finished product right now.

  • Hardman is roughly as raw as what Hill was coming out of school, but not quite as fast. The Hardman pick basically sealed the deal on what I am guessing is the Chiefs waiving Hill sometime this week. The rest of the draft addressed needs and depth. Good overall strategy. Each pick has some serious athletic tools. The question is how that translates to their pro roles. The Chiefs also made some decent non drafted signings, so we will have to see on that. Those guys are just as valuable as 6th and 7th rounders.

    Thornhill excites me.

I know nothing of Thompson, but 7ypc is pretty salty.

  • My personal grades:

    • Hardman - C - He fills a need, but Chiefs are acting like he’s the next Percy Harvin. He does have a valuable skillset in his speed. His ball tracking should be a good combo with Pat. I just don’t like trading up for guys in this area usually. However, it is hard to say this was a reach. Word has it the Colts traded up to get him, but then we traded one pick ahead of them. I just don’t like the front office’s affinity for “gadget” guys. So the only thing wrong with the pick is personal preference.
    • Thornhill - A - If he can come in an start right away at FS, this is a great pick. No other way to look at it.
    • Saunders - C - I think we could have made some moves to get into the 4th and gotten him there. Had to reach in the 3rd because we didn’t have a 4th. Basically made swapping picks with the Seahawks worthless. But, this is a guy with some fun upside…

Hard to grade anything after the 4th round imo. But the RB they drafted had a great PFF grade and Andy has had good success with late round offensive lineman.

Overall, a B-. I would have rather seen then keep their 5th and just take whatever WR was there at 61 (Butler and DK were both there). But it is what it is.

  • Saunders had a low 2nd high 3rd round grade on him. He may not have been available in the 4th. If he was taller he’d have gone before the Chiefs pick IMHO. I don’t know if he’s any good though, just the draft projections.

I’m 150+ pounds lighter than him and I sure as heck can’t do a backflip! Pretty athletic for a 320# dude! 6’ and can dunk. Hopefully he can play football.

  • @dylans I don’t get paid to do this, so my opinion doesn’t really matter. I just think for the most part, Veach gets too focused in on certain guys and certain positions. I think we were taking a DT there no matter what. And maybe he was the best that was left on our board. I just think that is a very flawed way to draft.

People on other boards make fun of people like me who think drafting is easy. But we watch the Pats and Seahawks do the same thing every season. Get as many picks as you can. If someone makes it to your pick that you perceive as a steal, you draft them. If you get to your pick and nobody seems like a steal, you trade back. Rinse and repeat. Trust your scouts. Trust your coaching staff to develop.

If Veach doesn’t absolutely nail every pick, we are in trouble. Especially depth-wise in the future.

  • @Kcmatt7 Veach is drafting with a very short term goal it would appear. I hope his gamble pays off, because the way the pats do it puts them in contention every year. Maybe Mahomes does that for KC, but he shouldn’t be taking Tom Brady money. And Tom’s cheap contract is part of the equation as well.

  • @dylans Yea this season seemed very clearly like Superbowl or Bust.

I’ve never been as sure of a 6th round pick. Dude is an Andy Reid RB.

  • @BShark I do like the RB pick quite a bit.
