  • Okay… the Royals are still alive. They have to win two at home to clinch the title. Doesn’t sound impossible… but consider San Francisco’s deadly weapon… Madison Bumgarner, who will be available if the series goes to seven games. Madison may be on the threshold of becoming one of the true superstar pitchers of all times. Kansas City must first win tonight before looking ahead at a possible rematch with Mr. Bumgarner. Can the Royals sweep the next two games?

Kansas basketball is about to start a new season, with a team consisting of several returning players, and several top tier newcomers. Can this young team that will be led by a relatively inexperienced point guard win it all this year?

    Come place your bets:

Which team has the best chance of winning it all, the Kansas City Royals or the Kansas Jayhawks?

It seems like the Royals have the easiest path. Just win 2 games. Then consider what Madison did to them twice in the past week.

  • @drgnslayr Royals only need 2 at home so have to go with them. Hawks will need 30+ to get he title over next 5 1/2 months & I do like their chances but…I say odds are greater for KC to get the next 2. Gotta have 1 first !!

  • I don’t know about you guys but if the Washburn game was tonight during the Royals game I would be watching KU!!! I would check the score of the Royals game during commercials of course.

  • @Statmachine

Picture in Picture? Many cable boxes have that capability if your TV does not.

  • Could this be the year for the Kansas City area?

    Royals

    Chiefs

    Jayhawks

How about 2 out of 3?

Seems like both good and bad luck often comes in bunches. Maybe it is our year for good luck! I’m hoping the Royals will trigger it off and we’ll be celebrating in April!

  • @Statmachine I’d like to watch both also if I had TWC, but Shady Sheon & his cohorts have snookered many of us behind the 8 ball at least 4 0f the first five games. I may go to a bar & grill to see some but paying a premium rate to see Washburn or ESU (KSTC) or Rider…you’ve gotta be kidding. JMO

  • @globaljaybird

You can always find an Eastern European feed and watch the game on your computer (I connect it to the big screen anyway) but you need to be very, very careful with the malware they try to upload.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Thanks but last time I did that the laptop froze up, the web cam blinded me & a US Govt copyright seizure notice flooded the entire page. Had to revert & restore the computer to a previous date to thaw the damn thing out. Ichabod’s & Hornets aren’t big enough deal to go thru that again.

  • @globaljaybird

Don’t use the IE browser, use Firefox (or Chrome) instead and you will not get as much as an issue and make sure you have all your antivirus in place and up to date, and under no circumstance accept to download anything. I use Firefox set up to not accept anything or store any information/cookies, After the game I run a complete scan using MalwareBytes (free) and I don’t have any problems. Also, I have several laptops so I use one that does not have any important information, disconnect it from the network and have only an Internet connection.

Amazing that we have to go through all this trouble so the relatives of the women’s rowing team (all 20 of them) can watch them compete on ESPN3, while hundreds of thousands of basketball and football fans are denied the same privilege.

Add in Sporting KC. They won the MLS Cup last year and are the play-in game of the playoffs this season.

  • Have all the teams in one city ever won all the tournament in the same season? Not many cities have all the sports, KC lacks an NBA team, but if the Royals pull it off and the Chiefs (which are getting better and better) and KU follow suit, I think it would be the most titles in one metro area (if you consider Lawrence part of the extended KC metro area) in recent history. It is a long shot but as good or better than most.

  • @JayHawkFanToo UConn won 2003-04 NCAA title, Red Sox in 2004 World Series, then Patriots won Super Bowl that season (2004-5).

Storrs, CT is about as far from Boston as K-State is from KC.

  • @HighEliteMajor : UConn women won it that year too. If female sports matter. SARCASM!!

  • @drgnslayr Since I picked them in 7 to begin the Series, I think they will in fact "Take the Crown " in the rub. It’s been 35 years since the home team lost the 7th in the World Series, & I fully expect that steak to continue at Kauffman Stadium again tonight. Our family has many, many fond memories at Royals Stadium (original name) going back to the mid seventies, & myself even the first year (69) when they played at old Municipal at 22nd & Brooklyn. Anyone besides me remember Harvey the mechanical rabbit with colored neon eyes that popped out of the ground to deliver new baseballs to the home plate ump? These are good memories again now, & many of us are savoring every minute of them regardless if they’re posting or not. Us old timers cut our teeth on sandlot BB so enjoy this one all you can !!

  • @Kip_McSmithers Oxymoron is what it is …

The local high school boys team would beat the women’s NCAA champs every year.

@globaljaybird Before my time – but pretty cool.

  • Of the 10 teams that went back home trailing by 2 games, 8 won the last two and the title, including the '85 Royals. History is in our side.

  • @globaljaybird Yes, I was just a kid, but I remember going to that old stadium on a Cub Scout trip and I remember the rabbit coming out of the ground with the balls. I didn’t know he had a name.

  • @HighEliteMajor I was able to get to a couple of A’s games back in the late 50’s when a small boy & remember a few of the guys that played like Howser, Siebern, etc, but they were laughing stock up until the late 60’s when Finley took his jackass mascot & the rest of the team to Oakland. The A’s were basically a farm team for the NYY’s & every great player they had seemed to get traded to NY. Even Lou Pinella was traded after winning Rookie of the Year with the Royals in 69. Mr Kaufman was the biggest sweetheart of a man & hired some damn savvy BB people to ignite that franchise. Philanthropists like he & Lamar Hunt just don’t come along very often & embrace a city in the ways they did. Ihope those guys get some huge smiles tonight.

  • @HighEliteMajor

Storrs, CT is stretching it a little bit, but neither the Celtics nor the New England Revolution or the Bruins won that year.

Other cities since then include: 2009 Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins and 2012 LA kings and Galaxy. A little before, 2002 LA Lakers, Angels and Galaxy…and Sparks (WNBA), Only city with 3 Championships before that 1935 Detroit with the Lions, Tigers and Red Wings winning Championships.

Also, the criteria has probably changed since Major League Soccer is now probably bigger (and growing) than the NHL in most of the country that is not part of the northern states.

  • @HighEliteMajor Thanks for the memories HEM. That’s good stuff .

  • Speaking of soccer getting popular, I heard the TV viewership in 1985 was 25 million. World Series viewers are way down.

And now it’s around 12 million. 99 channels and nothing on.

  • @JayhawkRock78

I am not sure where you get your figures or what they apply to…sound like figures for baseball.

While this World Series is wildly popular in our area, the rest of the country does not seem interested. The average viewership for the current series is around 12 million while the average viewership for the USA team in the soccer World Cup was close to 25 million. Baseball is steadily losing viewers while soccer is steadily gaining them.

  • @drgnslayr

Who gets the vig here? 🙂

  • Series just finished.

Bumgarner is so good that he changed destiny. This WS was destined to KC and Madison changed all that. He won 3 of their 4 games in the Series. I thought it would be tough for us after losing Game 4, because if you do the chess at that point you have to look at it like it will go 7 and we will still have to beat Bumgarner to win it.

I was skeptical after Game 4, but Game 6 made me believe we would find a way to beat him.

Let’s hope this young team creates a big chip on this for next year.

Regardless… thank you Royals for a great run! They weren’t supposed to make it anywhere near as far as they did.

  • @drgnslayr

As far as I am concerned the end of the season and the entire playoffs were like playing with house money. I did not expect them to get even to the playoff and here they were with a chance to win the World Series with the last pitch…could not ask for anything else.

They have a solid foundation of young and very likeable players and should have success for years to come. Congratulations Royals, you played with heart and made yourselves and your team proud.
