New 2019 Recruiting

I understand it is not the end of the world, and KU will be fine in the end. However, missing on JRE is a pretty epic swing and miss. Hard to believe Self and the staff couldn’t close the deal on this one.

me neither, DAM we have got to close these deals - - this one is big - -Like me and Bshark said you can talk till your blue in the face I feel beyond a shadow of doubt the FBI thing played a HUGE role in this – and were not done yet. - I thought it was looking like a sweet recruiting year - now looking like it really suck - -were not getting Hurt either - -take that to the bank. Get it over with. At least that means the first domino has fallen. I’m sure Nnaji will be next.

Ya quite possibly - - but how confident are we that he will commit to KU? - -his dad has said will probably announce around the 24 of November. - -After this hard to be confident on any of these kids this year at all now.

I guess we can try and pull some kind of positive spin on this JRE fiasco maybe. - -With JRE going elsewhere this might be enough to solidify Zeke committing to us - -I hope that’s the way it goes down anyways. - Actually thought I had heard really that Nnaji was a better athlete then JRE anyways is that right? - has anyone else heard this? – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 Nnaji is a better long term prospect but JRE is a better basketball player right now.

so straight up my friend no Bullshit - -shootin straight from the hip. - -What do you think our chances are with Stanley - -no hem hawin around - -just straight out. – or for that matter how does anyone else feel in reality what our chances a re?

oh my bad thought I had heard/read that Nnaji was actually the better athlete

You’d be correct. Part of Nnaji being a better long term prospect is his athleticism.

Bear in mind, Dedric is a terrible athlete (by freak standards) but an amazing basketball player.

    Pretty good.

  • Based on the information available to date, I would think that the worst of the storm is over for KU but just starting for programs like Arizona, Creighton, De Paul and others including Duke who might lose Zion and be in a world of trouble arising from his recruitment. There is no way Zion went anywhere without getting paid a lot of money. I don’t believe we have seen the end of it.

I would think this is the approach KU is likely taking, telling prospects the worst is behind and is clear sailing moving forward.

  • Duke isn’t going to lose Zion.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Zion is in the clear. He’s with Dook and Nike, and laws and rules don’t apply.

    Stanley.

JRE may announce for Nova as early as today apparently.

What or who have you been hearing/reading that indicates that JRE might even announce today for Villanova?

  • @BShark I think Chandler commit’s to Penny

Not sure Memphis is recruiting him that much actually.

Which probably says a lot about him… If we aren’t and if Memphis isn’t, that’s a sign.

I think KU could quickly get to the point where Chandler is a good option though.

I’m plenty ok with it. I’d almost rather just take him if he wants to come here. He is a 4 year guy who projects to be at the very least a solid playable piece. At least, imo.

    Early.

  • @BShark Well hopefully our luck turns to the good for us

  • @BShark well IF their not then maybe he follows his brothers foot steps

  • jayballer73 said:

I think there is a good chance if KU gets serious with him. Otherwise Ole Miss/Georgia Tech appear to be the favorites.

  • JRE chose Nova. Hard to miss on him, but life (and KU basketball) will go on.

  • @1JayhawkLifer Funny. Svi played the 4 and JRE wants to be a 3. No way he’d manage a perimeter shot in Bill’s system as a 4. Rotflmao

    Next.

  • @dylans if that’s all it is?

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

@dylans if that’s all it is?

It’s most of it yes. Some people in his circle aren’t all that realistic about his position.

  • @BShark just him and his mom?

  • Crimsonorblue22 said:

@BShark just him and his mom?

There’s almost always more than two people with a recruit’s circle. Coaches etc…

  • I meant his mom and him were the only ones to think he could play the 3?

  • Really confident KU isn’t getting Matt Hurt either.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 The FBI stuff sure doesn’t help.

The class is shaping up way different than initial impressions.

  • @BShark why do you say that about Hurt?

  • BShark said:

Really confident KU isn’t getting Matt Hurt either.

you and me both. - -That’s why I feel it of the upmost that we can land Zeke

  • Woodrow said:

@BShark why do you say that about Hurt?

I think and know I’m not alone - -think this FBI thing is playing a part - -and believe this FBI thing also play SOME part with JRE - -just like when Arizona got named and Louisville - -both took a big hit last year when this FBI thing surfaced. - -Arizona AND Louisville both have really bounced back this year but last year the same year they mentioned kicked them right square in the nads- - now were seeing the same thing.

I think with him holding off until spring – is for sure NOT GOOD for us - -w NEED ZEKE for sure

  • Zeke is our absolute best hope among the names KU is involved with now. Other than that, KU will get involved with guys that aren’t even on the radar right now I would bet.

  • I’m so dam tired with Wright and Villanova kicking us right square in the nads - -on the floor and now in recruiting - -their becoming a REAL PAIN in my ass.

Well I guess one way of spinning this is like said this might be just enough for Nnaji to commit to KU - -we can always hope. - -Seems like more then ever now we have GOT to land Zeke.

If we can manage somehow to pill Stanley away from the Coast/UCLA - -and manage to land Zeke with the other two we have now , would still be a decent class I reckon. -A lot of weight 0n landing those two now more then ever. Wouldn’t know of any others we could have a chance at - -Possibly Chandler. - -Like was mentioned wouldn’t be at all surprised if we didn’t really turn the heat up on Chandler either. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • On Hurt last I heard was he cared more about watching his friends play football than setting up visits. There’s not much out there on him right now, because Matt doesn’t have much info on himself

  • Reading the article about JRE’S decision last night from the LJW, what Coach Self had to say makes some sense I reckon,

He said after the trail when he was visiting the recruits was having to di damage control. - -He said YES there were questions asked about relating from the trial, and there was only some questions he could answer fully - -some things he just couldn’t disclose- I guess because of the on going investigation now from the NCAA I guess.

So if he couldn’t give complete answer to some of these - -that then would be awfully hard to convince someone on selling their program. - Might be just enough to push them the other way , which like Bshark and I both have said , people need to realize that YES this FBI crap IS having a real impact on recruiting. - -Coach Self has even mentioned as much - -and here is a news flash – it isn’t over yet. - - Hurt IS NOT coming here - you just sit back and watch, I promise you just like I’m sure it had an impact on JRE - -so much the same thing with Hurt. - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • The “we can’t talk now” stuff by KU is baloney. What can’t they talk about?

Self already claimed they have no knowledge of any inducements provided by third parties. If true, that is a blanket denial that covers everything.

  • @HighEliteMajor There couuld be some type of rule, formal or informal, against talking about anything once the NCAA has it. I am certain that discussing it, especially looking like you are denying any responsibility, couldn’t help but look bad for a school that might be facing an “institutional control failure” allegation.

  • Take our lumps now, ride out the storm and see what’s available in the spring. The news cycle will be on someone else by that point.

It’s a good thing the 2019 class wasn’t chalk full of stars. KU needs to find at least two front court options that can contribute next year. Maybe 1 recruit, 1 transfer who knows.

I think we are still in a good spot for Zeke. He visited twice in two weeks. Selling him a spot is easier without JRE in the picture

  • Bill needs to be talking to Dante’s handler and start talking reclass already. Get him here and eligible however you have to do it.

  • The more I look, the more Dante looks ready to play college ball now, physically. He will be old enough to go pro. I see no reason why he wouldn’t reclass unless the NBA changed the OAD rule a year earlier than most expect.

    Not getting Dante unfortunately.

Agreed, he’s as likely as Wiseman.

Yeah, might have to add a grad transfer, or play some small ball. But Zeke + a good grad transfer probably means a more traditional line-up again.

    Agree on the 2019 class.

  • From Hillkick on the Phog, typically has good info.

"I havent spoken to my source as to why he flipped to Nova, but I can speak to why Kansas was in the top 2 and why since last year, we’ve seemed to be his second choice:

Why KU was in the mix: Self Loves the atmosphere, program Family (Adidas a non-issue…for the record, he’s on a Under Armour AAU team, but Goolsby runs the cleanest AAU program in the sport)

Why we fell to 2nd: Our recent history of loading up on talented bigs (DeSousa, McCormick, D Lawson, K Lawson, Azu) Leading for a similar player (Hurt) UNC (and Nova) are marquee programs but unlike KU/Duke/UK, are less likely to land one and done types that will take over program A little itch to get away. Not in a bratty way way like Bol Bol, but in a life growing way

JRE is a very polite, cool kid, who loves KU and was upfront with the staff that he wasn’t a slam dunk commit. It’s about his personal beliefs about playing early, a better chance at having a large role on O and experiencing life on his own before he’s a professional. "
