Mykhailiuk update
-
JayhawkSlant.com’s Shay Wildeboor recently caught up with incoming KU freshman Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, who tried to clarify a couple of things during the brief interview.
First, Mykhailiuk said he did not know for sure when he would report to campus but expected it would be sometime in mid-to-late August and definitely by the beginning of September. Mykhailiuk, who turned 17 on June 10, will spend the summer playing for the Ukrainian national team before coming to KU.
Second, the up-and-coming five-star wing player gave Wildeboor a clear picture of his actual frame, which has been debated since he signed with Kansas.
“I can definitely tell you that I’m 6-foot-8 in shoes and 6-foot-7 without shoes,” Mykhailiuk said.
Crazy thing is he measured 6’6" at the hoop summit! I would gather hes not done growing. Hope he reaches 6’10" and we have a Davis type player on our team for 2 years!

I like the optimism about his growth and potential. I really do. But it seems like a lot of people reference growing a couple of inches during your senior year of high school / freshman year of college as “like Anthony Davis”. Lots of kids get late growth spurts and sometimes it actually makes them more awkward and forces them to play a position they are not used to. Anthony Davis was a once in a decade talent. I hope that this kid is even remotely close to the impact that Davis had on college hoops. Especially since we have him for 2 years.

Much more likely that Mykhailiuk plays in the vein of other taller Euro perimeter guys like Nowitzki or perhaps a Euro Kevin Durant, although probably not nearly as prolific.

So…he will be what? 6’-9" or 6’-10" at KU?

@JayHawkFanToo at this point I would say at least 6’9" lol

I think he’s at a pretty perfect size now. I’d love to see him stick it out at 6’8"… a perfect size for a swing-2. As long as he has the hops and moves, he’ll create his own scoring space on anyone… I care more about that than if he gains more height.
