Italy Updates

  • @BShark He has all the tools. You can see it. The game just needs to slow down for him a little and he needs to be able to see the bigger picture. I don’t think he understands ball rotation because he has always just shot every time he had the ball. He is a big mismatch vs other posts, but not sure he understands that you can only exploit mismatches when you catch the ball in certain spots on the floor.

But, from what I watched I’m excited how much of a physical specimen he is going to be at the very least. He rebounded pretty well in the one game I watched.

The original Johnny’s (which is the one I meant, dang auto correct) was by the main Shawnee Mission Post Office on Broadmore off Johnson Drive in Shawnee; the Olathe Location opened later. It has won many awards at the American Royals and was featured on the Dinners, drive ins and dives on the food network. Their slabs and burn ends are great. As I mentioned, Joe’s is still the best and the Olathe location is now the more popular and always packed; however, since they do not open on Sundays, Johnny’s is the next best thing in the Olathe if you need catering that day.

  • @Fightsongwriter

Bryant’s is know in KC for having great but greasy BBQ. I have not been there recently and perhaps it is no longer as greasy as it used to be but at one time, they would serve the food in baskets with paper at the bottom that soon became soaked with grease; females at the office would pass when we headed there for lunch; they had no problem with other places such as the Rosedale BBQ on Southwest Blvd that has great lunch sandwiches. Turkey is the least greasy of the BBQ meats so perhaps that is not the best indicator. Again, I have not been to Bryant’s in a couple of years (Joe’s is better and only 4 miles from home) so my experience is based on previous visits and what I hear from other people…as you know, everybody in the KC area is a BBQ expert and has a favorite place and BBQ talk is very common in all settings.

Agree and for once, it’s basically exactly matching what we heard about him coming out of HS. Could be special if he takes the coaching to heart.

  • @Kcmatt7

Exactly and also, he will be playing now against much better competition than he ever did n HS. He has a long ways to go if he wants to dominate in college like he did in HS.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Sorry my reply is a few hours after your question but I wasn’t tracking too well this morning. I’m better this afternoon. Barbeque … I loved it … but I have not had any for at least for 3 years. When I did eat it … we liked Jack Stack although it was pretty pricey back at that time. I still buy Hayard’s BBQ Sauce and cook some on the grill. Yum, Yum !!! Thanks for asking!!!

  • Q39 is maybe better than Joe’s. Maybe. A couple bucks per order more expensive, but well worth it. Down by the Med center. Can get reservations at their website. One opening at College and Antioch (old Haywards location) on Sept. 1.

  • Anyone go to Guy & Mays in southeast KS?

  • @HighEliteMajor

Q39 is very good. I was there not too long ago and it was surprisingly good but I would not say it’s better than Joe’s. It is somewhat different than the traditional BBQ joint insofar as the have items such as shrimp, salmon and burgers that you don’t usually find at BBQ places. It is fairly new but has a pretty decent following; definitely an up and coming place that is quickly becoming a real contender, something that is not easy in the KC market.

  • @bskeet no, guessing it must be good?

  • @bskeet

I have heard of it but it is not in the KC area, I think is somewhere south of Lawrence-Topeka.

  • @bskeet Guy and Mays in Williamsburg is an institution. Great ribs, wrapped in newspaper. Worth the trip.

@JayHawkFanToo I would never argue against Joe’s, but the Mr Burns sandwich - burnt ends, pepperjack, onion straws and chipotle BBQ sauce = best sandwich ever.

  • @HighEliteMajor

I love burnt ends, I will have to try it next time I am there. I am doing some work near the Plaza so I might take a lunch trip there in the near future

  • I have been to Williamsburg, been awhile, it’s excellent!

  • https://t.co/gzkvBE8zN7 Malik’s last interview

  • @Crimsonorblue22 The roads are even paved to Williamsburg now. Good food but I always hated getting the car or truck so damn dirty.

  • @bskeet We did 20 years ago…

  • I watched the first half of game two on my lunch break today. Here are my notes:

    • Garrett gets it. He understands spacing because he was a PG. He plays at 110% while understanding he can’t play too fast or he will make mistakes. On top of that, he is athletic and has great timing. He will be our 3rd big off the bench it looks like.
    • Lightfoot has disappointed me so far. We just should be able to do better for our 3rd big than him. He isn’t a threat to score, rebound or block a shot. He is essentially just out there. He might be in the right spot 100% of the time, but when you pose no threat it doesn’t really matter where you are.

  • @Kcmatt7 yeah a lot of folks where hoping Mitch would be a factor but I was skeptical. Maybe it’s the mask affecting him, May be its not. Still have no idea why Dwight left. He would have been our third big and got plenty of minutes. All this “he thought Mitch was ahead of him” doesn’t hold much weight right now.

  • @HawkChamp I think he wanted a larger role at a smaller school. He know he isn’t going pro (in the U.S.). So he wants 30 minutes a game. He needs more game tape so he can try to land an overseas gig. And his role here doesn’t allow him to show off.

Can’t blame him for doing what he thinks is best for him.

  • @Kcmatt7 I can see that but he could have played a sizeable role here. No one nationally cares at all what happens at Western Kentucky, with all due respect to that program. He would have been the first big off the bench to probably replace Dok, would be on national tv every week and have a chance to play for a title. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

  • @HawkChamp Lol me too, but I think we also have a bit of Crimson and Blue tint to our shades…

  • @globaljaybird It has been 25 years at least since I was there… It’s just a little bar in a little town with underwhelming presentation… But the ribs are unforgettable, after all this time. Glad there are a few others who can back me up on the awesomeness of G&M in Williamsburg…

As for KC BBQ (which is the best in the world) My top 3 are Joes, Gates and Bryants. I can’t deny that Joe’s is the best. It didn’t exist when I was in school, so the debate used to be Bryants vs Gates… But I’ve made the pilgrimage to Joes a couple times in the last 10 years and it’s made me a believer. Joe’s is sublime.

  • @JayHawkFanToo Williamsburg is straight West of junction of old John Brown Hy at Princeton & 59 Hy South of Lawrence & is at the intersection of JB Hy & old 50 Hy in Williamsburg . Just an old 3.2 beer 🍻 joint but has been there since Moby Dick was a minnow. PDG food 🥘 for an old spoon but not consistent . Was raised up not far from there, also drove through there often on the back/forth to attend KSTC Emporia. Was still a teachers 👩🏫 college during the Vietnam War.

  • @globaljaybird

Thanks for the info. I know the names is occasionally mentioned in KC when talking BBQ. I need to take a day trip there sometime.

  • @JayHawkFanToo I think you can take I-35 all the way to Williamsburg now. Back in the day it was mainly 2 lane blacktops & rabbit 🐰 paths.
