Clark Kellogg, screw you. “It’s very simple, the best team won”

@betterfireE just like Nova. Bill needs to swallow some pride and learn what he needs to do differently. The fan base isn’t happy with sweet sixteens. Come on guys
Alright expert, please tell us what HCBS needs to learn. Maybe you can email him and give him your expert analysis of why he fails.

I’m really more sad that I won’t get to watch FM and JJ, than losing in the E8 to be honest.
-
Oh well. I give up on being angry. Just sad.
-
Oregon played good defense on us. Thats why they won. We spent so much energy on defense in the second half without figuring out how to perform on the offensive front.
I miss having a shot-blocking big.
They look like a team that will win a championship.
Too much futzing around by KU. This loss wasn’t as bad as the VCU loss because aside from seeding, we weren’t THAT full of hubris.
That Jackson tip to the Oregon player at the end was when the game ended. Really wish Jackson had showed up tonight. The truth is he and Graham needed to be their absolute best tonight.

Having ZERO post presence was this teams undoing.
Self will never go 4 out 1 in again.
The key is to be able to go between those styles based on personnel and talent.
And injuries!
-
@kjayhawks but as much as anything, they hit shots.
-
-
@brooksmd it all goes back to preparation during the season. As you recall, I said that this team is soft and did not have a defensive mentality like what we saw against Nova and Oregon. Dont recruit small guards but get bigger ones that have girth. I love Frank and Devonte, but it made it tougher. Mario Chalmers/Russell Robinson types.
-
5-25 from 3 was a killer. Make at least 5 more of those, and you change momentum and possible outcome. Just not in the cards tonight, and OR played at their peak for about 35 minutes.
-
Two huge swings - at the end of the first half and not snaring the defensive rebound with a minute and a half to go when we had a chance to cut it to 5 or 4 and they hit a 3 to push it back to 9.
But, what is it about us that we seem to have all too many games like this - where we can’t make anything??? Going back to the Ariz game in 97 and the Syracuse game, among many others. Where otherwise good players just come up completely empty - Ellis last year and DG this year???
Is it something in the water??? I’m at a loss…
-
@approxinfinity You’ll feel better the next time your boy wins a game, your daughter brings home an “A”, or your wife winks & makes you smile. Tomorrow is just a new day in the off season. And we’re all still friends when it counts. Some never accept those things but that’s what makes it all worth while. ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!
-
@betterfireE good commentary. However, can’t underestimate 2 fouls on JJ early
-
@HawkChamp lol, you’re suggesting recruiting someone other than Frank, someone who is bigger. Please man, please.

Are you kidding me ??? Mason is the toughest guard we have ever had. KU lost this game because the shots didn’t fall. Plain and simple.
-
What did everyone say when Udoka went down with the injury? That the E8 or F4 was their ceiling. Having him throughout the season would have been huge. Just perspective.
-
This team went 31-5
They were good
Don’t kid yourselves
I fn HaTe waiting six months to watch Kansas come out of that northwest tunnel.
We are blessed to follow such a wonderful program
I love it so much that it hurts so bad.
-
@BigBad Loss of Udoka hurt.
-
This is the first time I ever remember not looking forward to next basketball season.

For anyone that thinks this game was a Bill Self loss, you need to rethink it a bit.
This isn’t Stanford or Villanova.
This loss was about a terrific turnaround after half time on the defensive end, but our inability to execute offensively.
I was continually amazed at the quality of shots and looks we had in the second half. The game was right there for the taking.
There were many times over the years when the “failure to execute” was incorrectly blamed. This isn’t one of them.
Still Self’s best coaching job.
@BigBad is right. Our thin post presence was the undoing tonight. We had no real option there.
Lots of things went wrong tonight. One of them was not Bill Self. He was calm and cool. And his team came out fired up after half, and everything went right except the ball going in the hoop.
Again, this is much, much different than some of the NCAA tourney losses we’ve seen.
Great season.

@approxinfinity Me too. - -now the depression phase will sit in for about a week. Then struggle through the summe r- fricken hate summer. - -I just don’t know who will be back I can’t even begin to guess. - -I know who needs to come back, doesn’t mean it will happen. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@HighEliteMajor yep.
-
-
We get to watch DG and co in the summer in Italy!
-
@HighEliteMajor great only ends in ship !
-
-
@HighEliteMajor Whats your thought about not seeing Vick in lieu of DG at all in 2nd half? I was a little surprised we didn’t see more Vick personally. Maybe attitude assessment on the bench, DG seemed more composed? Needed the 2 PGs?
-
@HighEliteMajor agree, but instead of waiting till after half to get them fired up when we have a deficit-why not have the guys ready at tip?
-
@DoubleDD I know about Frank - please. We could have used more length against Oregon.
Defense is king in the tournament, IMO, which is part of a larger category of energy. Bell had it. Dorsey had it. Brooks had it. Couple that with their length and defensive mindset and they couldnt be stopped.
I want a long, defensive team like Syracuse in 2013 or Kentucky in 2014/2015.
-
Well they go to Italy this summer, just really confused who will be going Devonte REALLY needs to come back – -I’m thinking SVI will come back, just not a good night. - - -ROCK CHALK AL DAY LONG BABY

You guys complaining about not having doka know Oregon’s 7 footer was hurt a few weeks back right? On to next year thanks everyone for the fun discussing of things. Wish it ended better.
-
@globaljaybird thanks buddy. you’re right

Well let me know when KU has a team to your liking. This team was special. If the shot fall KU is in the Final 4.

About time to dump the direct TV
Give me time to figure TV out without cable/satellite for next bball season.
-
@BigBad We should have that presence next year, will have that post presence - - with Udoka dam is the season really over - -feels like a nightmare -good season but came up short. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Self interviewed now.
-
@DoubleDD if they were special, they would be going to Pheonix but they arent. Really tough defensive teams make our guys uncomfortable and have for years. We need to get guys of that caliber defensively and toughness wise to match up better and make other teams uncomfortable.

Well it seems you’re an expert. Call Coach and see if you can get a job.
-
Self’s comments:
Matchup problems. JJ’s fouls. Shot selection bad. Got sped up. Didn’t execute. But we fought. Put ourselves in position. Ball didn’t bounce our way. But that was due to them. They were really good.
FM and Landen have been great ambassadors for us. But this will not define them.
Jordan Bell had a lot to do with it. Tyler Dorsey. Dillon Brooks. We tried to do it the best we know how. We just didn’t respond well today.
-
Bill: didn’t make shots. They hit everything. Got all the bounces their way… That’s about it.
-
At least somebody gets it.
-
@DoubleDD I like playing but maybe Ill get into coaching.
-
It was a respectable season and the Hawks were a lot of fun to watch, but that was a tough ending. I’m sad for sure but the guys that had bad games tonight feel a lot worse. At least I don’t sense that Bill puckered as much as we didn’t play well and Oregon did. I also don’t believe we got beat by an inferior team. Oregon is good - good enough to cut down the nets, so I’m gonna let it go while hoping Donna Altwoman stubs his pinky toes in the dark every time he gets up to take a leak in the middle of the night.
-
You know another thing was, we really didn’t really get out and run in transition very much tonight either, and they went down and held the ball and held the ball and held the ball and then when they did miss fricken Bell always seemed to get the rebound. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Knock yourself out. You seem to have all the answers.
-
@HawkChamp NY will let you move dude-unless Trump stops ya?

I agree it isn’t Stanford - although I might disagree a bit that there isn’t at least some similarity to Villanova - namely that we just couldn’t score - and that a key player just came up empty at a critical time.
While I also agree that Self did a good job with this team - adapting to the personnel rather than rigidly adhering to his system when he clearly didn’t have the right personnel to execute it, there is something going on that I can’t pinpoint. At the end of the day, the guy at the top has to be accountable for coming up short of expectations in the tournament. I think we’ve only finished above our expected result based on seed once during the Self era - in 2012.
There is at least some disconnect between regular season and postseason results. There is just too long a track record now to conclude otherwise. 13th straight conference title, 31 wins, probable NPOY - lots to be thankful for. But falling short of the FF yet again - as a number 1 seed - after dominating the first 3 games - in KC. Extraordinarily disappointing…
-
I want Roy or Cal to beat Dana Altman and his guys badly.
Then Frank Martin (#BIFM2!) can finish off the winner.

I would be cool with that.

The most interesting thing to me about this loss was the matchup zone that gave us fits. A typical Bill Self high low offense with a solid 4 kills that zone. Short corner shots, high low passes, etc. We’ve become a pick and roll, spread O this season and its great when the shots are falling and it’s worked great with the personnel. However it was a bad mismatch with the matchup zone when 3s aren’t falling.
