David Beaty signs 2 year extension

  • Apparently Sheahon Zenger believes Beaty has KU football headed in the right direction because Beaty signed a 2 year extension today that doubles his base salary to $1.6 million and increases by 100k each season.

I think this is a good move for 2 main reasons. First, it recognizes that Beaty has made progress with this program and anyone who’s seen KU football over the past few years knows that KU was much more competitive in 2016 than in recent years and on the verge of becoming a middle of the pack Big 12 team if a QB ever emerges. Secondly, it does put pressure on Beaty to continue this progress because increased salary equals increased expectations. $2 mil/year is why Gill only got 2 years. Had Gill started out in the $800k-1 mil. range like he should have, Gill likely gets 4-5 years because of the expectations related to his salary. Beaty’s $800k/year salary in a major conference doesn’t bring much as far as expectations go. $1.6 million and up to $2.1 million by 2021 do bring expectations of bowl games with them.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I read some stuff online today that if we didnt give him a raise he was headed to texas to be the OC or WR coach for more money. I like that he is getting a HC salary now, hopefully it works and we keep him around.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 any stipulations? Oc?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Not that I’m aware of.

  • I think this is a very smart move, maybe the people that has pull has finally seen the light. - -that progress is being made. You can’t keep firing coaches every two years and get any kind of continuity, on top of that players have a tendency to stay clear if not knowing if the Coach that recruited you is going to be there 2 yrs from now.

Maybe they are starting to get it, we get that QB and improvement on the offensive line, keep steady improvement with the recruiting looking better, like has been said yes we were more competitive , add some depth, our defense is right there, not that far off from being a really good defense - -just need the improvement on the offense - -makes me feel good tonight - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 what do you think?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I like Beatty - we both played for LHS coach Freeman. But he has to definitively elevate our level of performance or the carousel of change will keep on turning under SZ Who is that on?!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I still think Beaty needs an OC and to be an HC. If he wants to double up on responsibility, then making himself the WR coach would be the way to go.

There’s two glaring weaknesses on offense to me. I’m not including OLine because their issues are mostly due to youth I believe. To me, the two biggest issues are finding a QB who can keep drives alive consistently and make KU a team capable of scoring 30+ a game. Secondly, our WR’s need to learn to block better. Beaty loves those screen passes, but without WR’s who can hold a block, too many go for negative yardage.

  • @kjayhawks I doubt he would have actually left, but I’m sure his agent used that to work a raise. As any good agent would.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Thats some incentive right there!!

  • @Crimsonorblue22

So…if he coaches KU in a non-major bowl and loses he gets $200k but if coaches KU in a non-major bowl and wins he gets only $100k?

For reference, look how coaching and winning a major bowl is worded.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I have to say I am still wondering if they left out the bonus for National Championship? Geez, why even try if they won’t pay you extra for something like that?

  • @JayHawkFanToo No, if he wins a non major bowl, he gets $300k. Each bonus is cumulative so getting to a bowl game is $200k, winning that bowl game gets him an additional $100k on top of the $200k.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

Look at how coaching and coaching and winning a major bowl is worded and rewarded; seemed like the numbers for the non major bowl are switched. Just how I read it…

  • Fish playing in east-west shrine bowl. Love this kid and his story!

  • @kjayhawks I’m happy he got the extension /the raise I think he has us going for sure in the right direction. - - I kind of wonder about him going to Texas though - -I mean if Texas really wanted him down there, bad enough I don’t feel there is any way we could of kept him ere, they would always up us on the money, we couldn’t compete or I don’t think we would try that hard if it got really serious, just can’t match at this point what they have to offer. in football - - facilities, program itself., and other ammendities. just doesn’t seem right - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Now just watch the fools come out of the wood work wanting him run next season if the record does not improve.
