  In that final half game in S. Korea our players were so worn out that Self finally was forced to revert to systems basketball. We must not forget that IT WORKED WELL FOR THE OUTCOME. Given enough player talent, Self is a master at finishing games, pulling out wins in back and forth squeakers. I watched USA lose to the Canadians today in the Pan American Games. Kept imagining how Self might have coached our disparate group of American representatives in the closing minutes. I’m fairly certain of one thing: he would not have cut VanFleet from the group which had been selected for the trials. That young Canadian kid Murray displayed the difference to be expected from an accomplished point guard. Calipari is probably dancing a wild fandango tonight.

  The players we picked up blended perfectly w/our kids. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to represent KU or USA, especially w/the late injury. After watching the USA team in the pan am games, it’s clear our kids and coaches wanted to play team ball and were very proud to be there. A great once in a life time experience for most of those young men. Very proud of all of them!

  Since @jaybate-1.0 touched on “.82”, which can lead to a discussion of Self and his successes and fails as well, it is worth mentioning that, in my opinion, when you have a tough competitor, like Sherron or Mason or Self as a coach…sometimes you just give them the ball & let them ‘run’ the situation, as they obviously are good at it. In the case of Coach Self and his early exits, I look at it a bit abstractly: he’s a fiery competitor, we all know it. This is his baby. He’s almost always got it figured out, and its up to him and his players to solve (any) issues holding the team back, within the framework of what is possible with a given season’s roster limitations. Fiery, competitive guys HATE to lose, and that usually works to their team’s favor. Stated another way: Man, I’m not losing any sleep over the Kansas Jayhawks, even if they get bounced out of March Madness. Lose a game, meh… But lose our coach to the NBA or something, then its uh-oh!..(very hard to replace .82…).

  @Lulufulu The court side seats are reserved for the big time donors and there is no way KU would give that income up. I would guess that the better seats are between $5 kand $10K per season…maybe more.

  The key to this is that both of the guys in the corners have to be credible three point shooters, otherwise those defenders will sink into the middle and clog everything up. If Selden continues to shoot well, he has some gravity here that will hold his defender on him, giving Mason precious space to operate in. Running that when you are not surrounded by shooters is a turnover death trap because the whole defense collapses into the lane with zero options.

Rollie Fingers and his handlebar mustache and the rest of the hairy players (“Moustache Gang”) that were coerced to grow wild hair from A’s owner Charles O Finley.   @Lulufulu At this point Perry is really not a “stretch 4” even in college, and if he makes it to the NBA he will play SF and not the stretch 4. Stretch 4s are 6-10 or 6-11 players that can hit consistently from the 3. Perry is just not that kind of player.

  @drgnslayr I went into the WUG expecting to come on here and say the same stuff about Selden that has been said for 2 years. He did a 180 or a 360 for me and now that we’ve seen the appetizer we definitely can’t go into the main course and get a bad meal. Things might have worked out the best for Wayne if he takes this huge step forward. As they say, it could be his time to shine!

  @jaybate-1.0 I posted this before… From a pure basketball skill perspective Devonte is more that capable of replacing Nic, as I have posted before; he is not only the better athlete and shooter but considerably taller as well. However, the biggest asset that Nic brought to the table was leadership …and that comes not only naturally to some people (and not others) but also takes experience to develop it. I am not sure I can add anything else…

  @BeddieKU23 Sometimes the writing is on the wall and I would think that if KU saw that there were too many complication with Maker or he had already select another program, it decided it was better to spend the effort (and recruiting costs) on a more feasible player. A while back there was talk that Maker would stall until he was able to go directly to the NBA and by-pass college all together and this is the reason why he went back to HS. Now, by the time the next NBA draft comes around, he will be 19 and he can claim his class graduated in 2015 and thus he becomes eligible for the draft…a distinct probability.
