    • RE: First Impressions from last night

Hi, all. Glad to have a place to chat about the Jayhawks.

Joined many moons ago but haven’t been active in awhile (and spaced on my user name!) thanks to Beddie for that breakdown. Spot on.

      I’ll add a few tidbits…

Pretty happy to have hoops back! Everybody looked good last night.

Och looks fit. Hope he has a great year and expands his game a bit off the dribble.

The new guys: Will be very exciting to watch the new guards. Should be a fun crew.

Remy is full of swagger. Will be interesting to see how that goes over with teammates in good times and bad.

Yesu looked off. Hoping it was nerves as suggested above. He got up though!

Adams. I think I’m gonna like him.

I actually thought Clemence was more solidly built than I expected. Concerns about his quickness levels off the bat though. I thought it would be the opposite.

Pettiford!!! Solid play from a young guy.

Slight concern that all our littles seem kinda little??? Remy, Petti, Yesu, Harris. A few have solid builds of course, but hoping height not an issue vs bigger opponents.

@Jethro - thought I’d saw, too, that KU has had 34 years consecutive years of NCAA tourney bids. Never below an 8 seed, meaning they’ve always played a lower seed during this time. Unbelievable! #JayhawkCrazy!

And it should be more than 34 years! Ridiculous NCAA penalty in the Larry Brown kept us out a year, right?

Pretty happy with that opening performance! Och was on fire. And how bout them freshmen? Most of the world thought Clemence wouldn’t play. Well, he played, and contributed valuable stats and minutes. Attaboy!

      KJ Adams is bouncy.

    • RE: ISU Game Thread

Well, we won! I had a long winded post ready last night, but my internet crapped out before pushing send. So, this one will probably have fewer cuss words! I was surprised at how pesky Iowa State’s defense was. That made for an u-g-l-y first half. Extremely surprised to see KJ starting!!! He was a little bit lost at times, but I think with more PT he’ll be less lost and hopefully less stiff.

Semi shocked that Self is still trying to sort out who plays at this point in the season.

This is a weird season for Self. For some reason it really stands out how he’s trying to “herd” his players into whatever mold he sees fit. I’m not really getting it this year.

I think both teams were hurt and helped by poor officiating last night. KU for sure caught a lucky break on that non goal tending call. Game changer.

That Brockenwhatever dude has an amazing pull up midrange game. Did he miss in that range? His shooting form is perfect. Straight up, straight lines, release high.

      Great second half for KU.

Of all the names mentioned so far, Mosley seems like the best fit for our needs (imo). I can’t say i love the look of his jumper from 3, but if it goes in, OK!

Not expecting any KU players to enter the portal. As of right now, no one is in. Crazy.

This is kind of shocking. At one point, what, there was thought of at least three with a foot in the portal door???

      Up to 4.

Winning cures all I guess. Though 2 were a case of people thought Bill would boot them. Very interesting.

This probably means the attrition will be through the draft.

JCL, Cam Martin, Mitch, and Remy were all listed as super seniors, so they are all gone. Big Dave and Och are also gone.

We know that MJ Rice, Gradey Dick, Zuby Ejifor, and Ernest Udeh are all coming. Ejifor and Udeh replace Dave and Mitch. Rice replaces JCL’s roster spot. Dick replaces Remy’s roster spot.

So there are two roster spots open at a minimum, but I’m guessing KU fills three because Braun is probably gone, too.

If we assume that means Wilson is back, our rotation next year is:

Starters: Harris, Dick, Rice, Wilson, Transfer A

Reserves: Ejifor, Udeh, Clemence, Pettiford, Yesufu, Adams, Transfer B.

I don’t know where Kyle Cuffe fits into all of this. Honestly, he is the guy that I can’t really figure out. He’s a very bouncy athlete, but with him redshirting last year, its hard to gauge how the coaching staff feels about him. He can play. But how does he find minutes with Harris, Pettiford, Rice, Dick, Yesufu all playing guard/wing minutes. That’s five guys splitting up 120 minutes already, and we know Self loves both Harris and Pettiford, so 50 of those minutes are already gone.

KU could get by without any transfers, honestly, if Wilson returns. Even without Wilson, they probably don’t have to fill that other slot with a big time guy. But they probably do look for another guy either way.

Cam Martin was a red shirt, so at the moment he’s not gone.

So looking at the bigger picture with less angry eyes today … There were really no major complaints about last night. texas played excellent defense. Rarely can i recall saying this about a KU team, but it was a zillion individual things that did us in last night. Just about each and everybody had their own “oh shit!” moment. a turnover, dumbly dribbling into a crowd with no way out (a trend for Wilson), a bad lob pass, dribbling it of your knee and out of bounds (JCL. who didn’t see that coming a mile away?), a great rebound (dave) followed by a WTF how did that happen tie up, Wilson chucking it into Harris’ back, and the list goes on and on. That’s it. sums it up. Not poorly played otherwise IMO. Ok, we could have done better to get Och open, but i digress.

Selden has appeared in 127 total NBA games for Memphis, Chicago, New Orleans, and New York since 2016. He obviously got feedback from the NBA guys, who said with his size he needs to learn to be a true point. So, he’s gotta learn how to be a point, which given my limited viewing of him seems to be against his nature to wanna shoot. 3: Dave: who the eff knows. 4: Driving the paint: not sure I agree with your assessment here. — It’s like Self hasn’t given Jalen permission to play yet. — Love the confidence Braun has right now. But wish he’d stop with the post dunk stare downs. T’s in his future. — KJ sighting! Nice win. Gueldner displeased, saying it wasn’t impressive. First half was good. Second half seemed sloppier, but same number of turnovers I think. Sounds like Dave turned his ankle. Hopefully not serious. A few Things we’ve learned: — somewhat shockingly that Och and Braun (the shock) will lead the team in scoring. Honestly surprised at Remy’s role. — Wilson has lost something, and can’t find whatever it was. — KJ remains bouncy!

Christian is an absolute shocker so far. I would guess that very few if any of us saw this breakout coming. Seems like it’s a confidence adjustment that’s propelling him. I said a while back that’d I’d like him to chill on the stare downs after dunks and great plays, but I take it all back. That seems to be the key to his success. — Private thought that nobody else should probably read: We needed more cameras on Christian’s hot mom in the crowd! 🙂

As for Och, he needs to continue to get to the rim or IMO he’ll start to find less space to shoot.

Yup, Tis the season! Pretty much one more game for Self to give others some PT before conference play, right? That means Joseph Y has little time to find out how he fits in. The problem of course is that Self is trying to squeeze him into the PG role most times, and he’s not really a PG, yet. Same with Remy, really, but he gets the PT. Pettiford would be in the mix, so that’d be 7 1/2. As for JCL, as I whined about in the game thread, he simply doesn’t need to see the floor. Send him packing. Give that time to KJ and let him run wild like a gazelle on steroids!!!

Negotiated resolutions were not supposed to be an option once a case enters the IARP.

Yes, but my feeling is KU, like the rest of us, are sick to death of the foot-dragging on the part of the NCAA/IARP.

Even murderers and other scofflaws have the right to a fair and speedy trial under the 6th amendment to the Constitution. I would submit this charade has been neither fair, nor speedy and we are being held in a perpetual state of incarceration.

Yup, agreed we are all sick and tired of this. Also agreed that we’ve suffered plenty already. But remember this is the NCAA, so no right to a speedy trial. No 6th amendment protection here. Sucks.

I’m also guessing that KU is seeking a “plea bargain” here. Reduced charges in some way so they can be done with it.

      Just my guess.

What a second half! Didn’t see that coming after that intense defensive effort in the first half.

For those saying we don’t need Remy…that’s ridiculous. we need Remy. He’s quick, athletic, and skilled. just hasn’t found his niche yet. I doubt any rumor of him leaving is founded in reality. And obviously what this team needs is for Dave to play, and to play well. (but more KJ!)

Plenty of negatives in the first half (Braun was horrendous, Petty couldn’t dribble), but far outweighed by the amazing second half effort.

And why couldn’t Braun just wipe out Huggy Bear when he bumped into him? 🙂

I have a confession to make. I pretty much gave up on this game. I had to watch the replay late at night, was tired and cranky and started fast forwarding when we were down a ton of points. I ended up at the moment late in the game when they were wondering why Och wasn’t shooting 3 FTs. Somehow it worked out. No clue how they came back, but happy they did.

A quick look at the box score tells me Och and Wilson were the offensive studs. Dave too.

Starting to worry about Braun’s lack of scoring ability in league play. I’d have to go back and look at his game numbers, but seems like he’s come back to earth? I did see he made some nice plays though.

Wow. i think bitch slapped is about the best way to describe today’s game. Unpleasant for sure. exposed us athletically to say the least. No big insights to share, because really the game said it all. I know Wheeler and TyTy didn’t score a ton today, but who would you rather have on the floor, one of them or Harris? He’s just a liability in more ways than he helps. It sucks to have to say for sure, because he’s our guy. I know I hate on Harris a lot, but there should be so many other options on this team other than him. Physically developed guys. Sadly we have really no other PG options on the team. He’s it. Well, OK, Pettiford, but he’s hurt, and lost some development time.

      1. G Gradey Dick Ht./Wt.: 6-7, 195 pounds | Kansas: Freshman

Dick is way more bouncy and athletic than what meets the eye. On top of that, he can shoot out of the gym. He averaged 17.9 points per game on one of the best high school basketball teams in the country, Sunrise Christian Academy. He knows he’ll have to work for that starting slot, but can slide in and help fill the void of Ochai Agbaji (No. 14 this year) and Christian Braun (No. 21) next season.

The 14th overall pick in last week’s draft, Agbaji received the rookie scale contract that is standard for first-round picks. Assuming he signed for the full 120% of the rookie scale, which is the norm, he’ll earn approximately $3.9MM in year one and $18.7MM across four years.

The 22-year-old Agbaji won an NCAA championship with Kansas as a senior in 2021/22 and enjoyed his best college season, averaging 18.8 PPG and 5.1 RPG with a shooting line of .475/.407/.743 in 39 games (35.1 MPG).

I don’t care if he can shoot a jumper, not expecting that from him at all right now. Hustle, guard, rebound, fly through the air, make things happen with your athleticism. He’s an exciting player without being an offensive powerhouse at the moment. Just about every game he’s played he’s made something happen. I look for it every time he’s on the floor. More KJ!

Selden update Wayne Selden Signing With Turkish Team January 18th 2022 at 2:08pm CST by Alex Kirschenbaum Shooting guard Wayne Selden is signing with Turkish club Afyon Belediye of the Basketball Super League, per Turkish paper Afyon Haber.

After going undrafted out of Kansas in 2016, Selden logged time with the Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Bulls, plus several G League clubs. The 27-year-old wing then suited up for Israeli Basketball Premier League club Ironi Nes Ziona during the 2020/21 season.

Selden inked a non-guaranteed camp deal with the Knicks ahead of training camp and stuck on the roster through the start of the regular season. However, he was waived earlier this month as part of the Knicks’ Denzel Valentine/Rajon Rondo trade. Selden appeared in just three games for New York this season.

The 6’4″ guard holds NBA career averages of 7.2 PPG, 2.0 RPG, and 1.5 APG with a shooting line of .415/.344/.718 across 127 contests, including 27 starts.

Interesting game. Not easy playing against all those little guards. I had no ESPN+ issues. I stream thru the app on my TV, which is hard wired. New favorite player: KJ New favorite announcer: Wayne! Excellent job. Very knowledgeable I thought. So it looks like Remy needs time to learn how to play within Self’s system. Understandable. Just hope he and Self don’t have it out. We need a big.

      Needs for next year: shooting

Not sure any of KU’s rumored portal departures fit that role. So I’d guess Self takes on two guardish shooters at least.

One to start, one off the bench.
