I’m an alumni of the KU marching band. I know several alumni members, including myself, that are annoyed by the recent band directors decision to not wear uniforms for the first 1/3rd of the season. This has been going on for several years….The excuse is always that it is too hot or that they do not have enough uniforms to start the season. It was 81 degrees tonight, prime time TV and we are in shorts and polos. This has been a recent trend. When I was there we never did not wear the uniform for pregame and the half time show! Every high school band in the city wore uniforms tonight. KU football is taking the next step and the band needs to look the part on national TV. If anyone on here is a big time donor or has connections with the athletic department, spread the word and get some pressure on the band department to stop this lack of pride. Thanks!

RE: The Furph
Let’s calm down on the furphy hype… he has a decent 3pt shot and he runs the floor well in transition for lay ups. But he’s got virtually no ability to create his own shot. He’s only getting some looks bc he’s not the focal point of the other team. He is a poor defender. He’s slow footed and he’s really weak. He gets offensive rebounds (flys In well for them) but defensive rebounds he loses to his guy a lot. He doesn’t box out well. The team is 3-2 since he started. He’s a fine prospect for a 3 and D guy down the road.

RE: Big-12 Tourney
I don’t understand how the NCAA had a year to prepare for this and didn’t plan to have a 14 day period of team bubble isolation after selected teams made the field. Some reason college basketball can’t figure this out. Every other sport has been smooth sailing. it’s not just ku but Virginia maybe too, and easily could happen to others. They had no plan in place to figure this out if this happened, no flex schedule etc. fingers crossed we can go and our players remain safe

RE: Football chat anyone? On the road at Cincinnati to finish the season
So crazy this team should have been 11-1 or 10-2… really had some unfortunate luck, especially at the qb spot… hope we get a fun bowl game matchup… next year top 12 go to the playoffs. If this team stays together they legit have a chance at making that
-
RE: So- with all these players coming and going, what is next years team gonna look like?
Dave had a good end to the season and he’s not terrible. He’s got some good offensive moves in the post but he’s not a good shot blocker, struggles to score against length, not a great shooter past the free throw line distance, and he struggled defending pick and rolls. I think the point was, we got a little over focused on playing through him and against elite teams that wasn’t going to pull an upset… I felt like we created a ton of turnovers and were more sound defensively with the small lineup. I would have loved to see a full year commitment to an up tempo style with a small lineup. I think that would have opened up more driving lanes for Garret and wilson. Allowed better spacing for improved looks for braun and ochi. Mix in half court trap and zone like Villanova does occasionally… but Self is an amazing coach so what do I know. I just think the other style had more of a chance to pull some upsets in March. Oh well on to next year!

RE: 2021 Transfer Talk/List
I hope ochi isn’t gone. This team gets significantly worse if ochi is gone. Also from what I’ve seen, auburn is the front runner for ty ty. Not sure why we need another mediocre big guy in Christian bishop. This transfer portal is loaded and we are going to end up with cam Martin and Christian bishop?? Seems super underwhelming!!

RE: K.J. Adams
I wouldn’t knock the guy too much yet. He’s a top 80 recruit for a reason. What I saw was a very athletic muscular frame but maybe not the explosive vertical you are wanting lol. The kid had very good handles, nice mid range jump shot, and good passing ability. I think he would be a good get. Sure we missed on the 5star KBrown. Brown would have been here 1 year, this kid is a 3-4 year guy. Sometimes we are better off with quality 3-4 year guys anyway. Besides Brown could dunk but he couldn’t shoot a lick.

RE: Jayhawks in the NBA -- 2022
Ochi killed it end of the year. He just didn’t get playing time early. Awesome to see CBs game!

Freshman/newcomers review so far
Hey everyone I know it’s early, but what are your thoughts on the freshman/newcomers so far!
Here are mine so far:
Harris (I’m including him since he didn’t play last year): looks like a 4 year guy and a mix between russell Robinson/Aaron miles. Team seems better when he’s on the floor. Improved defensive pressure and ball movement. He needs to get his shot to be at least Russell Robinson’s level and continue to work on drive moves/floaters. He never has to be a scorer but he has to keep defenses honest.
Thompson: looks like a 2-3 year guy. Needs to develop his body and fill out his athleticism . Seems focused and has a good work ethic. I don’t love how his elbow wings out on his shot but the mid range looks pure. Reminds me of rip Hamilton. By the end of the year his scoring will be key. Defensively he doesn’t seem bad but not exceptional.
TGF: a little disappointing so far. NBA athlete and has shown good rebounding and shot blocking ability. His ball handling is holding him back. He can drive but he loses the ball too much or can’t complete the dribble smoothly. Haven’t seen enough of his jumper yet. Disappointing how raw offensively he is. He will be here another year for sure. I like 5 guard lineup look this year and I rather have him be the back up 15 min a game center in the small lineup.
Gethro M: wow he has the body type of a ku age Embiid, But he is so uncoordinated. I knew he was raw but he’s so much further away from being a contributor then I thought. Not sure if he will last at ku but I could be wrong and he might take a huge leap forward
Latrell jossell: not talked about really, very little video on him, we were his only serious offer at the time, many on here have discounted him. He hasn’t played much but my goodness he looks so much better then I thought. I sneakily think he’s being held back some to keep him hungry for more. The kid has reportedly the best shot on the team and that’s saying something with ku having Braun. His shot looks pure. He has good speed and he’s stronger then I thought. He looks like he has a good handle and can pass. I’m not saying I think he should be starting or playing huge minutes necessarily. But man he does look more like frank/Devonte then a guy people assume will just be recruited over. Obviously we need to see him play more to really know.

RE: The songs the KU Band played at AFH Games...
It’s fun to read about the ku band. As a member of the band for 4 years it’s always good to know how much the band is appreciated. As of last year they still played “in the stone” and many of the other songs listed in this post. Rock chalk!
-
RE: What to Expect at the Champions Classic?
McDowell has to play off the bench some. Way to hit those free throws
-
RE: It will be pretty hard for me to be excited for next year's team
You guys are crazy!!! Kj is one of the best parts of this team. This team is not elite bc Hunter Dickinson is one of the worst defensive centers in college basketball. He is slow and a poor defender in pick in roll situations. We also are bad bc Harris is Harris. Mediocre pg! Self messed up in recruitment and the portal. Chasing after arterio Morris, miss evaluating the talent of Timberlake and recruiting Elmarko to be an impact guy…. But no let’s focus on one of the bright spots of the team in Kj…… self should have gone after other portal guys. Should have just rocked Ingram and KJ and landed another impact shooting guard/wing!
-
RE: 2020 Transfer List
We will have shooters next year. Braun is obviously still on the roster and Thompson is an awesome 3 point shooter. Wilson has a good three point shot as well. Ochi has been inconsistent but I think his shot will be more and more consistent with each year.
-
RE: K.J. Adams
Villanova had nba talent but there guys were like Devonte or svi they weren’t top 20 recruits across the board. they developed into nba players
-
RE: 2021 Recruiting
The key is Hickman. You get 2 great players. Plus there is always someone really good late in the cycle. Still not shocking with the NCAA stuff going on and no reigning in of Nike and under armor schools on stuff. I’m sure we can’t match there offers right now
-
RE: K.J. Adams
I guarantee he will shoot 38% or higher from 3. And what’s the negative attitude on a top 25 recruit? The kid is a stud! If we want to break down a player, Kendall brown had a high dribble and no outside shot lol. Red flags right there
-
RE: Box Score Musings
Grady obviously looks awesome and legit! I thought udeh showed more this game. Defensively he contested the rim and he slid his feet better. Definitely looks like the starting center by half way through the season for sure…… Big missing piece has to be Mj rice. McDonald’s all American yet to play, who is suppose to be a scorer. Yesfu and mj rice; one of those has to be a go to bench scorer for this team to reach its ceiling.
I’m not on the Bobby P train yet. Good on ball defender. I don’t see the elite to the rim athleticism. Doesn’t shoot open looks. He hit one three but so does Dajuan. I feel like he takes up the same role as Harris. I think he’s a decent player don’t get me wrong but I don’t see the hype of this potential elite ku guard. More of a great role player ceiling. Russel rob level.
-
RE: Way Too Early Line-up and Player Thoughts
I think yesfu is still potentially a big bench piece. We are offensively limited in some ways and he has some much explosiveness and ability to score that others don’t have. Bobby and jaun are defensive pass first guys and poor shooters. in certain matchups we need yesfu!
Udeh definitely should be the starting center as we move forward. Love kj as an energy guy and defensive bench guy but not the starter yet…He really needs to grow offensively to play more.
-
RE: KJ Adams Discussion
Honestly KJ blew up teams pick and roll with switching and containing guards. You can play small and win at a high level. See Villanova. KJ was fine at the 5 and not the reason why that team, while had a good season, struggled at times. They had no bench!!! Guards off the bench were terrible. Udeh got better as the season went on but he wasn’t consistent off the bench… the starting line up also struggled to score bc dajuan is limited, mcculler was a very mediocre offensive guy, and Grady was mostly a set shooter that needed to be set up. Kj was very dangerous in pick and roll situations, and was one of our best players down the stretch. Obviously hunter gives them a different type of team. Last year If you had a legit sixth man and McCuller was closer to a 2nd team all American they would have been legit. McCuller wasn’t as good as billed as an overall player. He was a good defender but not a star and they had no bench.
-
RE: MAUI WOWIE TOURNAMENT
Awesome bounce back. Mcdowell really showing what he can bring to the team!
-
RE: Bracket chat
the odds of sustaining another dislocation is extremely high! He is probably cleared to play but I would expect surgery in the offseason, and if he doesn’t do surgery and plays next year it will be concerning it could happen again next year… McCullers injury they’ve been super vague on. Most likely a small medial meniscus tear that he will have scoped in the offseason. This team was never that elite when healthy but especially not now. With that being said the tourney is a crapshoot and we are talented enough to get lucky and make a final four. Odds are just lower this year than most self years
-
RE: Zach Clemence
“DanR” that seems a little harsh. He’s a pure shooter at his size and if you watch his videos he has nice skill moves. Modern game is all about stretch big guys and he seems like one of the best in his class at that. I’m tired of watching videos of kids only dunking and then you see one clip of their shot and you see a huge red flag!
-
RE: Tyon Grant Foster commits to KU
We will see what self does. I think we play 2 big guys only with lightfoot in and the rest of the time play 4 guards. It really just comes down to if lightfoot becomes a starter or not
-
RE: GAME DAY
And if these are suppose to be rpo’s then pull the damn pall and throw it when they are crashing the line

RE: Bill's Evolution - The Athletic
For sure basketball has moved away from a true post game. If your 4 and 5 can space the floor and shoot, defense becomes super difficult. Also it’s funny when I watch nba, post ups can be arm barred and pushed but if they barely slap a hand on a drive it’s a foul. So definitely rules are going against post up play. Lastly I think post up play has fallen off due to the lack of good hook shots from many young post players. If you can’t use either hand on a hook shot, back to the basket post ups are worthless. Doke’s dominance down low really showed last year but early in his career his post up game was so raw and not developed. We partly lost to Villanova In the final four bc he couldn’t punish them offensively inside to make them pay for going small, and we got killed bc he wasn’t as good at rotating out on shooters during that game. Hence wide open threes. This years doke would have made it hard on that Villanova team.
-
RE: GAME DAY
Is anyone freaking tired of shot gun hand offs. Like I don’t get it, we’ve been watching this same spread offense crap for the last 8 years. If your going to spread then pass more. If you want to be a run team then go under center or at least run triple options out of shot gun. But I’m sick of these shotgun hand offs over and over again. Ugh
-
RE: Self talking about the team
I feel like we didn’t get to really see wilson. He had virtually no game time and he didn’t have a chance to develop. Sometimes freshman change a lot over a year. I remember oubre jr really struggling until about conference season and then he was great. Wilson started the first exhibition game over the other freshman, meaning he out played them in practice. Braun looked the best thru the first 2 exhibition games but looked bad against duke and tristian looked like the best freshman in that game. Wilson got hurt shortly after that and braun ended up making big strides and enaruna never made a big impact… from what I saw of wilson he had good strength and height to play the 4 spot if we played 4 guards. Had the 3 and D potential for a pro career but his ability to drive the ball was my concern. He may not be good but let’s not rush at dismissing a top 60 recruit after like 3-5 games lol. People assume Harris will play a lot. We haven’t seen him play at all. We could easily go 4 guards and Thompson/braun could play back up pg and tgf, wilson, and Tristian will get quality mins from a 4 guard lineup.

RE: Wow. Bucks Boycott Game 5
Situation was awful, but honestly it’s crazy how in many of these situations, the individual has a prior extensive criminal background and how many of them get escalated when they resist arrest. Doesn’t make it right but let’s also stop acting like the guys are angels or have no fault of their own in the situation. Senseless excessive force has to stop but defunding police is not the answer. Improving education requirements/schooling of officers, Transparent investigations, and counseling/mental health opportunities. We know ptsd is a major thing for the military but we don’t think about ptsd effecting cops who face dangerous situations daily. Hopefully as a country we can progress beyond racism, especially the police force violence. With all that being said, hopefully the public can be educated on respecting officers and following their directions to avoid these encounters.

RE: Gonzaga Game Thread
I feel like people are over reacting. Gonzaga is a legit team and it was the first game. We replaced our two biggest scorers and our best player is playing a new position…
Center will be the weakest position all year. McCormick will be the guy, unless he just falls flat. He isn’t great but Gonzaga has some of the best big men in the country and I do think he will play a little better. Lightfoot will have a major game or two but he is still lightfoot and is outmatched too much.
Wilson, TGF, Tristian will battle it out for the starting 4 spot. I think it will be 7-10 games before one clearly wins it. Wilson played the best today but I think it will fluctuate for a bit until there is a clear winner.
Garret and Ochi are lock starters and should be the stars of the team.
Thompson and braun will battle it out for the Starting shooting guard spot. The other will be the main guard off the bench. Braun had a disappointing game but he will bounce back. Thompson looked good and I think he will end up being the starter…
Small chance Self could go Houston rockets and play 5 guards but I doubt it.
We had the best team last year. It’s normal to have a slight rebuild year. Plus, fbi thing has kept us from landing top ten players. We will still be a top 10 team by years end
-
This is a Second round team if they keep playing McCormick
Starting line up needs to be: pg Harris, sg braun, sf ochi, 4 spot garret, 5 spot wilson… mix in Thompson, lightfoot, tristian. McCormick only for specific situations
Playing 5 guards gets garret off the ball and back into what he played last year. He’s better offensively when he can catch around free throw line and start driving. 5 guards Stops McCormick killing offensive drives and being a defensive liability on pick and roll… Any decrease in rebounding or inside scoring would be greatly outweighed by improved pick and roll defense, increased steals, and improved offense… McCormick is not a good rebounder, not a shot blocking presence, and not a great offensive threat. Plus he doesn’t realize he’s more landen Lucas level and needs to do the little things well. He takes way too many shots and bad looks.
Becoming a high energy 5 guard team makes this team more dangerous long term!
-
RE: Talent Wins Games
Honestly this team is a good team but not a great one. Let’s see what Self can do. He’s rarely overachieved with his teams potential in the tourney. Now partly it’s because he’s usually had great/top 5 type teams. This team reminds me of like every Izzo team. Good players with only 1-2 really nba level guys. Typically, Look way outclassed against superior athletes but then in the tourney play rugged defense and smart basketball. Grind their way to a final four and everyone is like how in the hell did msu make the final four. But once they are their, they have no real shot to win it all. And typically lose in a non competitive final four game…… how different do we think about these last 4 years if we actually get to play in that tourney with senior doke

RE: Big 12 Expansion
file:///var/mobile/Library/SMS/Attachments/eb/11/DAB2B33D-7A00-4B04-81F7-45EC6DAFA7D8/Image-1.heic
So we were third in revenue. Way higher then other big 12 teams. AAU membership and we have a lot of the KC market, which sure isn’t huge but still a decent market that the big ten doesn’t have…. I guess I don’t get how Bball doesn’t play into this. So all of these TV deals that are driving this are only football related. Literally one of the most televised things in the winter is college Bball. College football doesn’t carry the whole winter. So the UK vs KU Bball matchups have no value over a mediocre Iowa football team vs ucla football? Like I get getting the best football you can, but duke ku etc have such a Bball following. How would that not drive the needle a bit for the TV contracts, to include KU vs ucla, KU MsU etc
-
RE: Hog Wild Game Thread
I somewhat agree. I think wilson around that screen had the potential to shoot a 3 instead of drive. I think everyone gets the reasoning for the quick 2 etc. also I think we’ve all seen people force a bad 3 point look. Generally speaking I agree though under 15 second you should go 3 if you can get that look. I don’t know how many times they say get the quick 2 but it’s not always that easy. The guy misses an awkward drive or it takes too long to get that quick 2. Or they get fouled and miss the free throws from the drive……Ku in general did run the play correctly. Here’s the thing though after you make the shot/free throws, you can’t just let the star player whose made a ton of free throws just catch the ball so easily. Bc you essentially are giving them back the two points. After wilson Made his free throw. Without having to be freed up on a screen their best player just caught the ball so quickly. Poor execution by ku!!!..… in my feeling with this team they should have gone 3 to tie but oh well…… also not subbing in a second big on that crucial missed rebound on the free throw near the end was frustrating
-
RE: KU Offseason Chef Bill Cooking Thread
I see Harris at the pg, Adam’s at center. Elmarko starting sg…. I think we land 2 transfer guards. Both high level guys that start at the 3 and 4. Small potential our 2024 guy reclassifies and battles for the 4 spot…… udeh and zuby back up bigs……. Chris J and hopefully another transfer guard off the bench. Reality self will probably still have Bobby or yesfu back but they should both be gone… I’m pretty confident zach, cuffe will be gone. I don’t see mj rice upside. He’s strong but he’s not very laterally quick, he’s not fluid with the ball and seems awkward. Shot doesn’t look elite. I rather him transfer…… this team lost really bc of no depth at the guard. Bobby yesfu and mj rice were awful this year. One good bench guard would have changed KUs chances
-
RE: NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME MUTTERINGS
But yet since 1999 they’ve missed the tourney 9 times, only 8 times made it to a sweet 16 or beyond, won 25 games or more only 9 years. They are the weirdest program to profile. Nothing before 1990s essentially. A lot of mediocre years. Couple great years, 3 magical runs to win a title as a low seed. Won title every time in the final four. I’d rank them fringe top ten historically 7-12 ranked. Always depends what category you favor on a ranking system
-
RE: Exhibition Game Tonight
@approxinfinity It seems that way. They couldn’t event get 80 points against fort hays state!
-
RE: What to Expect at the Champions Classic?
I think Timberlake and furphy battle for the first guard off the bench bc we do need someone who can provide the scoring punch. Timberlake hasn’t been great so far but he has to have a chance for a little longer. Which ever guard doesn’t win that spot needs to be behind McDowell. We can’t play furphy and Timberlake combo that much against good teams. It is too much of a drop in speed. We need a second guard to be athletic play good defense etc. I also think McDowell can be like Garret and against a lot of matchups he could fill some Adam back up min at the 4 bc we can’t really count on Braun to be that guy.
-
RE: Is McDowell injured? Dnp against UConn. Furphy showed some improvement. I hope for steady improvement!
I guess agree to disagree. I think Jamari has way higher ceiling. He has way more nba athleticism. If you had no idea of their ranking coming into the year, has Elmarko shown anything that says lottery pick guy versus Jamari? Jamari’s shot mechanics are better than elmarko. Jamari had the second highest plus minus of any player in the Maui tournament. Only guy higher was the Marquette big guy. Rebounding defense has been better out of him. I guess just different perspective of what I’ve watched. I’m not saying elmarko is awful, but I don’t see the separation. Furphy can shoot but he’s pretty slow and it shows. Either way all 3 of those guys will get better and it will be fun to watch. Go Jayhawks!
-
RE: KU vs Indiana game chat
McDowell huge again in a big game! Very excited to see him get like no minutes next game
-
RE: KU vs Indiana game chat
@jayballer67 For sure! He has been stepping up in big moments this year, even though he’s not been given consistent minutes. He deserves the playing time and the ability to grow. He’s got huge upside
-
RE: Then we have this , kind of interesting something has to happen/ Triple Option ?
I’ve been saying this to buddies for awhile. Honestly even a single back under center type attack with option and triple option with a receiver in motion would be better. We’ve seen Synder at KSU be successful with a funky run style with option and some passing. Ku can’t out recruit all of these surrounding schools in this spread RPO system. Les Miles knows how to develop and recruit defense. A more running style offense will help rest the defense and limit possessions.
-
RE: Wow. Bucks Boycott Game 5
Getting training on better ways to avoid having to use excessive force is very important. Yes, the police throughout the country have lost respect as a whole and proper steps need to be taken to fix the issues. Still though majority of cops are great at their job and do it the right way. If the guy had followed the cops instructions, didn’t resist arrest, stopped after being tased, it wouldn’t have escalated to this.
-
RE: ESPN's Greatest College Basketball Players of All Time Bracket
Great idea, terrible execution! Seriously it’s like a 22 year old duke grad did this. Danny Manning, 2 final fours, 1 championship (one of the most magical championship runs ever), 12 all time in scoring, averaged roughly 24pts 9 rebounds a game 2 straight years, is an 8seed??? Carmelo is a 5 and he had one great year, and he should be one of the higher freshman but still a 5 and manning is an 8. Not only is manning an 8 but Zion is the 9 and Christian laettner is the 1 seed in his bracket. Jay Bilas even called out how crazy that was on the live broadcast
-
RE: GAME DAY
This has to be the worst half of ku football I’ve ever seen. I’m not shocked by the qb play, but defensively I’m just at loss for words how bad they look.
-
RE: Mitch
I think we play lightfoot 25 min a game at the 4 and when he’s out we rotate 4 guards. Thompson and Braun are good shooters and I believe ochai will continue to improve on his shot. Wilson didn’t get enough time to really evaluate but he has good form on his three point shot and I expect him to shoot well. Biggest loss is dotson’s driving ability.
-
RE: 2020 Transfer List
I don’t see why we would need another player at this point. We have a really good starting 5. With garret, Ochi, Thompson, lightfoot, McCormick. We will play 2 big guys with a true power forward in lightfoot and play some combination of 4 guards with all of our small forwards in braun, tristian, wilson, and the new highly ranked juco guard. You have another pg in Freshman Harris. Silvio will be the main big guy off the bench with the freshman big guy gethro possibly playing or redshirting. We don’t need some mid major guy playing ahead of higher upside guys. We saw what Braun can do, but the other small forwards have high upside and will impact the program long term not one year!
-
RE: 18 Point Dogs to the Bears
@jayballer67 I agree with you on Daniels…Daniels is the future for ku this year. I rather play a freshman who clearly has a strong upside this year then play some old senior who couldn’t out compete an average Carter Stanley. The junior Kendrick I would have been fine with giving a little more of a chance, but here on out we should play Daniels. Daniels will grow more from playing then sitting on the bench… you can’t help that our o line sucks, defense is not good. We have talent at skill positions but too many other flaws. Offensive play calling has been suspect and pooka played at wide receiver way too many times
-
RE: 2020 Recruiting
I get changing rules if your trying to keep top talent I guess, but the nba is watered down basketball. They have limited time to get a shot off. It’s really one pick and roll with maybe 2 passes, at most, with a quick shot. Quality of basketball is better in college. There are more play designs, more teamwork, and pace is much better.
