It’s downright nuts right now. One moment, raining cats and dogs, within 5 minutes the sun was out and shining

  • Prayers going out to my fellow jayhawkers

WOW - that’s all I can say. - - I know they were saying it was a huge Wedge tornado - ended up not very far from my Daughter and her boyfriend - -pretty scary

  • I know you all are pretty worried about me. It missed my house by about a mile. Too close for comfort.

  • @DanR check in more often! Glad u r ok, thing was huge. My son was at work, drove home while the sirens were going off. đŸ€Ź

  • Are there any lawyers on here? Can someone pass a law that bars any tornadoes rated higher than F0 from the state of Kansas? And parts of Missouri (my son lives in KC) - throw in Oklahoma and Texas too, I have people there. Well - just ban tornadoes from the U.S. all together. Thank you.

  • Well just hear the stats on this huge ass Tornado from last night going through the South end of Lawrence - -and then Leavenworth & Wynndote Counties:

    Classified as a: - - EF-4 , - - -Highest winds were 170 mph - - -

These next two things were insane : - - The width was a MILE wide - - - - -and this dam thing traveled on the ground for - - - 32 Miles - - - #2 Miles you guys that’s just insane - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABAY

ya me too , I think we did lose one person. - -An 80 yr old man was asleep and it picked up a car and it was on the roof top and the roof collapsed right on top of him - -Sending Prayers - I think maybe there was like 19 injuries - could of been a whole lot worse

  • It was a weird weather afternoon from about 3:30 on yesterday in Lawrence. You could tell it was a bad situation: tropical, zero breeze, 80+% humidity, dark for late afternoon. I tracked the cell/storm from when they first sighted it about 45 miles away around 5:00 and figured it’d die out before it got to Lawrence. Sirens went off about 5:45 and it was still near Overbrook (20+ miles away). Had time to drink a beer and follow it on weather sites and TV, figuring it would die out. Last report on TV before the power went out was that it was between Lone Star and Clinton Lake, gaining strength headed NE, which to me meant it was headed right to S. Lawrence. (Luckily it was actually a tad south of Lone Star Lake which was farther south than they thought on TV.) I suggested to my wife that we just get in the car and drive NW out of the way, but she thought we should stay put. OK.

Anyway, I grabbed my laptop, computer backup drive, the dog, and the fire box with birth certificates and passports etc. and headed to the basement. We have a pretty safe spot in the SW corner under a very solid work bench.

    Things learned:

    1. Don’t store a bunch of shit under the work bench.
    2. Get a battery back up for the sump pump in case the power goes out for 6 hours again with 3 inches of rain (luckily it rained so f-ing hard so fast, it all just ran off)
    3. Don’t expect cell phones to work with a tornado nearby (totally useless for a good half hour window when we really could have used info)
    4. Get something to recharge cell phones when you’ve wasted battery life trying to track a tornado
    5. If you have enough warning, I don’t know why you wouldn’t just get in your car and drive out of the way.

Hats off to the warning system though. We had a good 25 minutes notice before it rolled by. Sad to see Pendleton farm (pumpkin farm/farmer’s market mainstay and farm to table grower between Lawrence and Eudora) get nailed and a bunch of homes just south of the city limits, but i don’t think anyone near Lawrence was seriously injured.

  • It’s called a tornado watch, because you’re supposed to go outside and watch it. 😆 They’re way less scary when you can see them.

  • @DanR Tornadoes are scary phenomenon. If you aren’t scared of a tornado - you’re stupid. (not YOU - people
) Simple as that.

I’m notorious for “skim-reading”, but if this wasn’t on your list, might be a good addition. A portable radio with fresh batteries.

I agree with your wife - stay out of the car and in the basement. Storms can change track in a heartbeat and even if they don’t they can scatter debris for 50+ miles. I believe very few people are seriously injured while in the basement.

    Stay safe!

  • @DanR glad to know you are safe.

  • @nuleafjhawk I’m definitely not afraid of tornados. I respect their devastating power, but unless they sneak up on you or are barreling down on your exact location, they are not scary at all. More of an awesome power that should be respected. In Lawrence amongst the trees and hills they are scary. On the plains where you can see it for miles not scary unless you are a huge wildcat.

  • @dylans if it destroyed your house and hurt your family? Gotta respect them, can’t see them at pm or rain wrapped. I know a family in Burton who lost a lil boy while they were in basement, chimney fell in on him. So be careful!đŸ˜€ a parent talking here! Not old enough to be your mom though!

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Yeah and a little girl got beaned in the face at a baseball game yesterday. Shit happens. People are a hell of a lot more scary and far more likely to hurt you. Period. Nature is to be respected. Some people are just scared of everything.

I’ve seen 7 tornados in the last 5 years. No need to pee yourself, just plan accordingly. Weather worriers- build a bunker or ark!

  • TStorming again

  • You are scared of the wrong thing. 450 Americans die every year from falling out of bed; 60 from tornados.

Been through 2 MAJOR TORNADO’S - the one that about took Topeka off the map - -long time ag - and the one in Andover - -both F-5’s – Me Myself - - I’m not stupid - -you see these people going to chase Tornados - -me I’m going the OTHER WAY.

anything that can strip bark off trees - drive straw through a 2x4 - - I’m out not scared - - it’s called respect.

  • @jayballer73 Yeah. You get it. ✊

It’s scary as hell in that moment, but to cower in fear over every warning or super cell is dumb as it gets - such a waste of energy.

Storm chasers are a huge pain in the keister. Those jerks tend to park in the middle of the road making travel dangerous.

I live in tornado alley you don’t have to chase them, just spend more time outside than inside during the spring/summer, you’ll see one eventually.

ya I’m right there with you too Tornado Alley- -right here In good ol Topeka Kansas

  • The flood waters are back. The main road I take out is completely flooded out. The creek near my house has spilled over as well. 70+ mph winds last night too.

  • @BShark oh no! How much did u get? Winds were awful here, got about an inch. My son is getting married around Leavenworth. Barn wedding. His bride is from Florida, her immediate family is here and I think her wedding party is coming today. But! Some family and friends are backing out, can’t blame them. They are all worried.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 It’s bad. I couldn’t tell you rain numbers but we are under a flood warning.

  • We got over 5 inches pretty close to where I live - - - Ozawkie

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Yikes, so they escape a Florida hurricane by going to a flood in the Great Plains!

  • Come further west. No rain on over two months. It’s dryer than a popcorn fart.
