KU's next coach.
-
Someone brought it up on another page, but some sports talk guy was rumoring Self to the Spurs next year. I didn’t hear it, haven’t looked into, but let’s just pretend he got some inside scoop. Who do you like for the job? Lots of good candidates out there. Their qualifications are simple. Recruit non OAD elite players to KU, be a potential HOF coach, and catch and pass Kentucky on the all time win list. Win some natty’s. Keep the KU brand in the highest consciousness of college hoops fans and media.
-
Same rumor for years because of his connections with the GM
-
HE NOT GONING ANYWERE
-
IF he was to leave - -and again that is IF - -this would be the year - -because of the following reasons. - -This whole NCAA/FBI mess - - # 2 - -because of the NCAA PERIOD - - # 3 – this is the one NBA team that he has been mentioned with quite frequently - -because of the connections - -& # 4 - -the struggles of the team this year - -oh ya then also the possible upcoming sanctions and possible penalities. . - - -ROCK CHALK ALLDAY LONG BABY

How about that funny lookin’ Bobby Hurley kid at ASU? Could we get past the Dookishiness?

HELL. NO.
-
@approxinfinity Double he** no. Never know when he might get diarrhea at a crucial moment.
-
Did u see him get knocked over by a loose ball last pm? He was po’d. It was hysterical.
-
OK OK OK, moving on!
-
It’s a very real possibility. Ppl need to get a grip on this reality, and truthfully there’s obviously more shady doings than we know about. It’s unfortunate and a stain on the history. Clearly we have recruiting issues and have had for years. Could be time for a different direction sadly
-
@HighEliteMajor hmm I missed that the first time around
-
@DanR I would puke daily if he was our coach. Please no, no NO!
-
@wissox I don’t know…your logic and timing makes perfect sense; however, I just don’t see Bill leaving on a down note (which this year already is when you factor in Dok, Silvio, investigation, et al.). Because of who he is and what he’s meant to our program, he seems more like the kind of guy who would walk into the sunset after winning the NC.

I could very easily see this happening. - -There comes a time when a guy says enough is enough. - -Bill MAY just be fed up with all this NCAA bullshit. - -The recruiting process of this job can be very hard - - tiring - - and Bill has mentioned in the past about the NBA.
He really doesn’t have anything else he needs to accomplish at the College level. - - He has a streak for most consecutive championships that will NEVER be broken in this day and age - -He has an NCAA championship - - -He is a College Hall of Fame Coach , nothing really left for him to accomplish at the College level. - - - -he was able to be able to have his son be with him through College -Coach him
With all the bullshit the NCAA THIS just might be the time - -With Popovich retiring sooner then later - -this is the ONE NBA job I could very easily see him leaving for and get his feet into the NBA with the Connections he has with the Spurs. - -He wouldn’t have the stress of having to recruit -being away from family as much - -with this NCAA mess/ the FBI thing - - -the struggles the team has had - -THIS could be the year.

Thanks @DanR for actually answering the question!
A couple of names worth keeping an eye on: Will Wade at LSU is showing some ability as a coach. I really like what he is doing there, but the locals, as I well know, don’t really care all that much, so he could be a hot commodity, and he’s still very young. The guy appears to be a great recruiter as well. Take a look at NBA draft boards and see the LSU names on there.
Maybe Brad Stevens will realize that the NBA is structured that all of the elite players just go to the elite teams and they’re all in the west. The NBA championship will reside there for the next half decade until Joel’s Sixers mature into a championship outfit. 5 years is a long time to wait. He can come here and compete for Natty’s immediately.
I don’t have a finger on the assistant coach scene. Obviously there are some out there who will become successful head coaches.
-
@wissox I’d love Brad Stevens, but his situation in Boston looks good for the foreseeable future. They have a decent roster and are still loaded with draft picks.
-
@dylans might as well try and get Steve Kerr if Stephens says no.
-
Always good to dream lol.
That said, I doubt the current (?) Spurs rumors are substantial.
-
A more realistic NBA coach might be Billy Donovan, in my opinion.
Personally, I’ve been impressed TTU’s Chris Beard.
If a KU connection is necessary, Jerrod Haase might be the best bet.
@BShark There might be a number of teams that might gamble on Self and part ways with their current coach if they know Self is interested.

I don’t think Beard would come to KU.
I am not sure the name KU would actually get would be a huge splash name. Self wasn’t a super huge name but he turned out alright. I hope this isn’t a real discussion for another 5 years though.
-
@HighEliteMajor at programs like KU I don’t think you need connections to the program. You go hire the best most realistic guy. There is not one coach with KU ties that is qualified for the job.
Personally I would call Few and make him say no.
-
@Woodrow I like Few too, but he has the exact same b-day as Self. He wouldn’t be a long term hire.
-
Among college coaches, Chris Beard would be near the top of the list right now. I agree with @wissox about Wade at LSU being worth a look. Chris Mack at Louisville would be another interesting name considering his success at Xavier. Nate Oats at Buffalo would be a name to look out for as well.

Solid list.
Also I am just not convinced that the NBA is remotely interested in Self at this point.
-
Chris beard is respectful of our program too.
-
@dylans I’m sure dozens of power 5 programs have came at Few, he’s probably too late in his career to leave. Now the Blue Bloods like us I don’t believe have came after him so who knows. People don’t give him enough credit for what he has done, Murray State, Wichita State and a list of other mid majors have had good 5 year run but he is in a class of his own in consistency for a non power 5 program.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Beard or Wright would be my first choices at this point.
-
No Wright is wrong for me!
-
We considered Few back when Self was hired. I think he was one who was interviewed, but all I really remember is I thought he should get it and I was very skeptical of this O State alum coming in…
-
Has a big 12 coach ever moved directly from one team to another in the conference? Huggins went to WVU from KState, but they weren’t in the Big 12 yet. Billy Tubbs went to TCU from OU in 1994… long gone before they joined the Big 12.
I sure can’t think of anyone right off the top of my head.
-
@wissox Let’s not go there

@truehawk93 pay up I posted it

@DanR you should probably win some award for picking Hurley!
-
Chris Mack no way.

It hit me like a lightening bolt : our next coach is … Devonte Graham. Don’t hate on this idea…I could be on to something…The second his pro career ends, I want him on the staff learning all he’ll need to do to take over when Coach retires.

Would take, though I don’t think Self holds on that long.
Fwiw, Naadir Tharpe actually is coaching right now. Who would have thought that?
-
@Fightsongwriter Maybe we could lure Liberace…

@nuleafjhawk Huh?

@Fightsongwriter Bruce Weber

It’s been too long - i forget how to upload pictures in here.

@nuleafjhawk Hit reply (not quick reply) and click on the cloud with an arrow icon above the text box to insert a picture.
-
@nuleafjhawk If you are using a smat phone instead of a tablet or PC, you will have to scroll the icons at the top (the bolface, italics, etc) over two items to unveil the upload icon. The emoji icon is the first hidden one, upload with cloud and arrow is the next one. I spent months before I discovered the invisible part of the icon bar.
