Only one dunk v. ESU
-
@DanR Old man game. Me likey…
-
I should have checked the box score before saying anything about Dedric. He didn’t waste a lot of energy, that’s for sure…kind of like the Morrii twins their first year.
-
Yeah, lots of Memphis people and even Dedric’s own family will tell you he’s never going to wow you with flashy moves. Might not be able to jump over a dollar bill but he absolutely gets buckets and fills the stat sheet.
-
@DanR more worried about doke!
-
Do dunks count more than the average, garden variety basket? If not, why waste the energy?
Dunks are more of an ego thing and at times designed to get the audience going; there was no need for that last night. UNC used to have a drill where layups would count more than dunks and regular baskets since it is the easiest and usually the safest shot to make, takes the least amount of energy and counts the same 2 points.
-
@JayHawkFanToo you are no fun! Dunks get the crowd going! Intimidate your foe! How would you feel to have doke dunk on you!
-
ESU was pretty determined not to get dunked on.

Isn’t it what I said? I don’t believe the crowd needed dunks to get going and AFH by itself is intimidating enough to Division II teams such as Emporia.
Sorry to disappoint you but the chances of me being in the same court with Doke are about the same as me winning the Powerball…and I would take the Powerball.
-
I’m sure I’ll get blasted for this but the athleticism on this team is lacking.
-
Grimes failed to secure a couple of rebounds due to lack of vertical leap. He may get up with a running start but he doesn’t look explosive from a standing position. He actually looks a tad heavy to me.
-
Dedric will be a skilled below the rim guy. He tested as the least athletic guy at the combine 2 years ago so this is not surprising.
-
Doke always needs space and struggles with fast defenders. Hurt us against Nova and again last night.
-
Vick is athletic but his handles cant keep up. Dvonte and Frank opened a ton up for him.
-
Dotson - seems like the most athletic of the starters.
With that said it doesn’t mean you cant win a ton without top level athleticism.

Well, I was in the audience last night, and I definitely wanted to see some dunks!
@BShark – yeah, ESU actually did areally good job collapsing on the big guys.
-
McCormick is going to be a beast when he gets a little more comfortable. He was amped up like a year-old golden retriever last night, running into teammates and chasing any ESU player that had the ball… the BALL the BALL !!!
-
Doke was at a distinct disadvantage with several smaller, faster players crowding him and making him pretty ineffective due to his inability to quickly pass the ball to the open players. Doke could have had a dozen assists but it is not something the he will face against most teams and I am sure, or at least I hope, the coaching staff will work on getting him to get rid of the ball when double or triple teamed. Big, strong, slow players typically have problems with smaller, faster players.
-
@DanR You gonna be at Washburn? I was thinking of going to that one.
-
@BShark I don’t think so
-
Agree but if our guards cant show an ability to hit the 3 to provide space than I’d rather have Dedric play the 5 and leave Doke on the bench.
-
Can’t say I blame you but what the audience and the coaching staff want are not always the same thing. I am sure the staff was more interested in having the players execute the plays and play as a team and dunks were not a priority…they will come when needed.
-
@DanR Ah okay. If any other Bucketeers are going, drop me a line, we can at the very least say hello and shake hands.
@BigBad Really agree with that, actually.

Look liked, on tv at least, a lot of the players were overhyped for the game.
-
think our freshman can get hudy legs under them by seasons end and add to their verts?
-
-
No uncertainty here by ESPN:
Kansas looks like a National Champion.
-
I’d have to say for the first game I was totally pleased.
-We have the one dominant guy. Dedric is terrific.
-Mitch looked confident from 3 with a nice stroke.
-Moore looked better than I expected.
-Dotson/Grimes are the real deal.
-Garrett’s shot still looks horrible, but he seemed pretty good with the ball.
-Vick will ebb and flow as a shooter does. But I think the high flying, grab the lob and slam stuff is coming.
-Doke will be effective sometimes, and sometimes not. ESU just did the hard trap on the block ala SDSU when we lost at home. Good strategy.
-McCormack just needs PT and practice. Like many guys we’ve seen.
Truthfully, I saw nothing really to be concerned about given the absolute wealth of talent at all times on the floor. The only guy we would take a dramatic turn downward, if we lost him, would be Dedric.
And we don’t even have DeSousa.
This is an incredible group of talent.
-
@HighEliteMajor can we guard a 3 pt shooting nova team?
-
@HighEliteMajor You are higher on this team than I am. Thanks for your thoughts.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Probably not well enough to have a mediocre scoring game. But I like having Dedric instead of less rangy guys. And I think KJ would cause some issues on the perimeter if he’s in the PT mix. Doke can’t hang in that environment, assuming it’s similar to Nova last season. Dedric, DeSousa, KJ, Grimes, Dotson, with some Vick mixed in, would be a nice group vs. a Nova-like team. That’s an opinion on one game vs. ESU, though.
-
@Crimsonandblue12 @HighEliteMajor Didn’t Grimes block a 3 point shot, tipping it to himself, then take it coast to coast? I know that means nothing, but I’m hopeful regarding the length we can roll out if we need it to guard the perimeter.

The guy got 15 rebounds - - - -and made it look easy. - True competition wasn’t squat BUT I don’t have any problem seeing him getting that here also - - vey easily see it - -his points his rebounds just looked like so easy - -like taking Candy from a baby. - Very minimal effort. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@JayHawkFanToo I was thinking the same thing about this. - -Last I knew a layup - OR a dunk both count as 2 points. Ya dunks look sweet- -but they still don’t count anymore - - hell I’ve seen blown dunks just the same as a layup. - -as long as we end up with more points then the other guy - -it’s all good
-
@HighEliteMajor Garrett’s shot probably will always be ugly – but his defense is nice & really like how he went to the boards last night think I can live with that type of rebounding and his defense. think we have plenty of offensive production - -I agree with you, - -The one thing that really stuck out to me was - - Depth – Depth - -Depth. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY -

i’LL say this again - - DEWPTH - - DEPTH – DEPTH - -this teams Depth will cover up a lot of mistakes. - - Like they said with this yr’s team - -last year we didn’t have the luxury - -this yr? - -umm ya - -I think we have the chance to just swallow up some teams on the Defensive end - - Length? - -we got Length , Speed ? - - -We got speed Rim protectors? - - - -we got Rim protectors - - I know in the 1st half of most of it- - - all they could do was try and shoot a 3 - -NOTHING inside. - -we were pretty well killing it - -they really struggled getting ANYTHING had to chuck up 3’s - - I think in just a little further down the line this is going to be a very dominate defensive team.
Our out from perimeter Defense I think can be REALLY good with Dotson Grimes and then Garrett - - JUMPIN - -GEE - - HOSSA FATS. - -give these guys just a little time – look out , people think this team is slow? - -fill me in on which game they were watching our speed is just fine. - The only you can Claim is slow - -Is Doke, everyone else has at least average speed - were good. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

He has great length and understands basketball/angles which really does make him an exceptional rebounder.

It wasn’t necessary against ESU, but if they played defense the entire game like they did the first 7 minutes I dread to think what the score would have been. Hard to keep defensive flow with the wild player rotations but also the fact that the players knew ESU had no chance.
-
I could be wrong… but what I’m smelling so far with this team is COMPOSURE!
Dunking is awesome for several reasons. But I wonder if this team is strictly composed on winning games versus just entertaining the crowd, though what is not to like about this team including their ability to entertain.
All our young guys have a long ways to go, however… I’m sensing better basketball IQ (cumulative) from this team.

I’ve been banging this drum. Been very high on that aspect especially for Grimes and the Lawsons.
