There's no safe place in this world.

America! Where you have the right to be wrong.

@wissox83 the hawk is a well known underage spot. Honestly being over 21 there is on the old side.

Scant details about the incident yet. I would really like to hear some witness accounts to see where and how it happened. This seems like a big stink for Lawrence. I was surprised to see Lawrence averages about 5 murders per year recenty.

Still unclear if it was in or outside the Hawk. Key detail IMO! Can't believe nobody has tracked down the incident report yet.

Sounds like the two that were injured were simply bystanders in an altercation they had no part in. Which is incredibly sad but the injured kids parents failed him miserably. A 16 year old outside of a night club at 2 am is absolutely unacceptable behavior and the parents that allowed should be ashamed of themselves.

I know some long time Lawrence residents that moved on a few summers ago. They said after the homeless camp moved in the drugs and the violence got worse.
Edit: not saying it had anything to do with what happened here

The homeless people are a mess, lots of violence! Lots of mental problems. Im wondering if the 16 yr old was staying the night w/the 18 yr old. Probably the parents of the younger kid didn't know what was going on, no school the next day. Kids are sneaky. They weren't in the bar. I hope we hear the whole story.

@crimsonblu22 definitely a sad situation all around with what happened at the hawk and the homeless around town. It’s sad to me with all fraudulence in government and billions we send over seas to have Americans on our streets. Would be like me giving my paycheck to the neighbors so they could prosper while my family starved right in front of me. I was young once too and snuck out a time or two mainly to hang out with girls. But if I ever got caught inside or outside a nightclub at that age and hour, my dad would’ve kicked my ass into the middle of the next month. Not to get way off topic but coaching my sons 5th grade basketball team this season compared to my nieces and nephews 10 years ago, the accountability for one’s actions are non existent for most of these younger kids. I ran one of the kids extra for telling his mom to shut the F up. I would’ve got my ass belted by my mom, my dad and both my grandfathers if even thought about saying something like to an elder let alone my mother.

LFK has a few issues but is still a phenomenal place to live. The population to stuff to do ratio is awesome. And the people are super.

Ugh, yea those camps can be rough. At times supportive amongst themselves, but not a great environment for those living on the edge.

I wonder where it is in Lawrence? not that i've been there in decades...but curious.

Come out to California! The camps are everywhere. Praying that it's not me some day!

Others who live closer can chime in, but when I was back a year or so ago, I went down New York Street near the train station and back toward the river, where my grandpa used to take me to watch trains 50 years ago. There was evidence of numerous homeless in that area. That was kind of a surprise.

I've also heard there are homeless along the river on the other side (west) of the bridge. And across the river, where Johnny's is located, I think there may have been some. Recent laws have allowed municipalities to move encampments and remove people, so these may no longer be spots.

I really can't imagine trying to survive a winter in Kansas homeless. Yikes.

                              Rock Chalk!

The city cleared out the camps months ago. The only one left is on the KDOT right of way near Centennial Park.
