Post Latest Scuttlebutt on When Jam Tray Will Be Back Here
-
I do not recall if he got a one game suspension, or an indefinite one. If anyone knows, please let me know.
-
Cynical view … with Embiid out, my guess is that any “suspension” was promptly reduced to time served.
-
@jaybate 1.0 think coach said he hadn’t decided.
-
When it comes to discipline, Self has always been very strict and has never compromised. Having Jamari in the game last Monday could have been the difference needed to win that game and yet he did not budge. He suspended Tyshawn and EJ before and they returned when the suspension was over and not before. I am sure Jamari has a good idea when the suspension will end based on the transgression, and he will return then.
-
@JayHawkFanToo unless he murdered somebody, pretty sure sitting on that bench, knowing he could have made a difference, has weighed greatly on him! Understatement!
-
@HighEliteMajor: It is certainly a possibility.
-
@Crimsonorblue22: I am trying to recall if Self has tended to do indefinite suspensions, or definite ones in the past. It seems like indefinites are his preference.
-
@JayHawkFanToo: Can you recall, was Tyshawn’s and EJ’s a definite period, or number of games, or was it an indefinite suspension?
-
@jaybate 1.0 If I recall correctly, TT was suspended the first two games of the season. Thing is the “length” question was asked and answered in each instance before by Coach but not sure that question has even been asked on Jamari. Would Jesse N. know? He has to have done something against team standards to warrant it tho.
-
@RockChalkinTexas post game interview coach said he hadn’t decided. Rumor was he was in an altercation. Stress rumor!
-
Must be a fairly serious infraction for Self even to consider more than one game out for Jamari. My take is that Bill Self is something of a father figure for Traylor. Tough love has come into play with this situation.
-
@REHawk I think you are exactly right on the father figure. Pretty sure he said he loved him when he was talking about him.
-
I posted on another string that Self lays down the law as needed for out of control individuals to the point of losing games as needed. I admire him for that and have lived through it as a KU athlete in another sport. It can cost a team dearly, and hopefully teams learn the lesson soon enough to keep in line and win respective conference titles, advance to significant post season success, etc.
Either way a coach like this teaches life lessons that will serve these young men throughout their lives.
I was fortunate to have a father, coaches, and others who did the same for me.

@jaybate 1.0
Here you go…
I seem to remember that Tayshawn was also suspended at least on another occasion, maybe related to his part in the fight with the football players and ensuing twitter posts or his romantic encounter under the bleachers with a member of the women’s basketball team???

@JayHawkFanToo I want him back! Dude lived in a car in the winter in Chicago.
-
Me too. He brings so much energy to the game, you can tell he really wants to play. His personal story is also compelling; hard not to like him.
-
Mario Little’s suspension was indefinite. Good news is that he is practicing with the team. I am optimistic that he will be back for the next game.
-
@jaybate 1.0 It was Self-imposed and TBD by Self-determination. I would think time served would be a pretty good indication that JTray will be back when Self deems him sufficiently punished. I would really like to see Black and Lucas go the distance. We know what Embiid and JTray can do, but let’s give Lucas and Black some real mins. The TCU and TT games will be a great opp at this time.
What a contrast of coaching and leadership between Self and the rest of the B12 coaches. Self is a true HOF coach.
JTray is practicing. Is Embiid completely out or taking soft reps in practice to keep him up to speed with the plays?
-
@JayHawkFanToo Great pics and JTray is a great kid after all he’s been through. He’s paid some prices in life. But seems focused, growing, learning, and improving each day.
Great pic of the coaches.

“My take is that Bill Self is something of a father figure for Traylor.”
You hit it square…
Self has stated several times that he isn’t going to let Jam leave this university until he has a definite skill set to make a good living. You don’t hear coaches usually comment like that.
And at the rate Jam keeps improving… Self won’t have to lose any sleep over it!
This is the kind of story that makes basketball really worthwhile!
The days of Jamari living in a car condo are over!
-
@drgnslayr Coach Self said that he is meeting w/Jamari today and that he anticipated it going well. Optimistic!
-
@drgnslayr A very inspirational story, Jamari latching onto Bill Self and the Kansas program after his Chicago streetlife as a vagabond young teen. Kinda sad that he has gotten homself cooped up in this current doghouse, but, hey, he is still a kid (although riding the cusp of an age when adult decisionmaking and consequential awareness is supposed to kick in). His progress in the sport has been very commendable for a player not rated in the top 100 when he arrived at a topclass Div. 1 program. I have come to put great trust and faith in High Elite Major’s analyses and prognostications. HEM might have underrated the eventual development and impact of JamTray, just a hair. And yeah, I feel certain that we would have defeated K State if Jamari had been available, esp. with the re-tweaking of Tarik’s ankle in that contest. Lucas was just not quite yet ready to plug the gap (but this date next year, LOOK OUT!). Anyway, I wish the best for Jamari, and feel confident that he will immediately come round. If Self lets him off the hook earlier than anticipated, Traylor sure as hell best not let him down! I would imagine that the entire squad knows full well that Bill Self’s stance toward tough love is firm and relentless. Until JoJo heals and returns, we need the Bruise Bros. at 95% efficiency.
-
My money is on Traylor coming back to Lawrence after he is done, probably every year (as long as Self is here)… to refresh his spirit, refresh his connection with Self… and most… to give back to the people who helped him by giving him a chance!
So… expect to see him back working camps and wherever he is needed!
Traylor will become one of the great legendary Jayhawks because he will keep the connection tight and will always give back!
I hope sometime in his Kansas playing career he becomes the guy who hits the shot, or makes the block… whatever it takes to win the big game! Imagine if he is the one who makes the “Chalmers’ play” to win it all?!
-
@drgnslayr dang, tearing me up!!! I hope he’s always around.
-
Just heard on twitter, Jamari is back!
-
-
@JayHawkFanToo LJW has it posted too!
-
I saw that. Still nothing in his twitter account.
-
@JayHawkFanToo just glad he’s back and lesson learned! He’s a crazy guy, I can see where he might be easily persuaded! Life lesson! We will sure need him while Embiid is healing. I so want kstate again!
