All Is Well

@KUSTEVE Iirc it ended up being reported that the Lawsons didn’t even have a gun. But still, they tend to keep on finding trouble.

Lawson brothers = Morri twins Part 2
-
@AsadZ I think that comparison means that it is manageable. I hope that is the case. The Morris twins were at least manageable. Not so sure on this Lawson thing. My concern is that having roster spots filled, again, creates issues in recruiting – if this does blow up. We seem to have enough trouble as it is nailing down quality post players.
The over-under is the semester. If this does blow up, I think we’ll know by then. Our luck on transfers has not been stellar as of late with two post guys bailing quickly, and one good for only a season.
We has nice run with KY, Black, and Mickelson. But Coleby, Maxwell, and Whitman, not so much.

There exists a double edged sword in the matter of recruiting players who did not fit comfortably into other programs and settings. Our coaching staff can look for players who already show super talent on the court; and the year of Jayhawk practice time while gaining eligibility to play is a major plus. So, by the time transfers are eligible they, ideally, should be tried, tested and hungry to fit comfortably into a winning operation. On the other hand, players who did not fit in elsewhere (or were headaches to other coaches) sometimes fall into very touchy trial projects, quite likely to push various envelopes both on and off the court. From what I have read, I’ve a feeling that Newman is set to fit right into Bill Self Basketball as well as to glean favor from Jayhawk fandom. The Lawsons were hit with immediate negative fan, and probably coach reaction, what with the Tubby Smith bashing, verbally on record by KJ. Then brother Dedric drew a major setback via summer actions which cost him a team trip to Italy. Now more Dedric adverse publicity, perhaps not fully warranted, but broadcast negatively in the sporting news, nevertheless. And tucked away somewhere is the account of an explosive Lawson eruption vs. a former Memphis teammate, perhaps an incident reported to involve weapons on one or both sides. I am fully aware that recruiting quality bigs to an Adidas program located in the cold old winter Big 12 heartland is tough; but OUCH!

@HighEliteMajor The thing about Maxwell and Whitman is that they were baffling pick-ups at the time, even though as fans some of us tried to rationalize them. And in the case of Whitman well the post situation is so thin that the team just needed a body and he didn’t tie anything up beyond one season. Coleby was at least defensible and looked serviceable, but that ACL tear changed him. I’d include Withey in the good run.
I hope it works out, because Dedric is very talented as is Chandler. Chandler and JRE would be a dynamic duo.

@mayjay Three things I always told my boys:
-
There’s nothing you can do after midnight that you can’t do before midnight.
-
Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
-
You’re known by the company you keep.
Actually four if there was further arguement, I’m the boss, I pay the bills and I said no.

@BShark Good grief … of course Withey. Best transfer pick up by Self. KY was the guy, though, that was a dead critical need pick up at the time. Would love to have a KY fall in our laps now. But it’s getting late. I agree on Whitman and Maxwell (who I always want to call Murray for some reason). Puzzling additions. Coleby did provide some value.
@brooksmd As a parent, #2 is perfect advice. I’ve given it … but we’ve all probably had a few good things happen after midnight, right?? A long time ago, in (what feels like) a galaxy far, far away.
-
@BShark I’m a rationalizer. I blow smoke up my butt on some of these players. I accept it as an occupational hazard.
-
@HighEliteMajor “…but we’ve all probably had a few good things happen after midnight, right??”
When I was a parent with kids at home, that was precisely the set of happy memories that scared the hell out of me!

@KUSTEVE Thing is - -do you get hazardous pay lol - – -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@HighEliteMajor What @mayjay said. Didn’t need extra bills caused by that.
-
@BShark Maxwell wasn’t puzzling at the time. He had a younger brother who was thought to be a potential late bloomer in recruiting, but he never bloomed and Maxwell moved on because of that.
Whitman is definitely the much more puzzling addition because it forced Coleby out. Colby would either be starting next to Doke or first big off the bench had he stayed. I didn’t get the Whitman transfer at the time because it meant Coleby was moving on when it appeared that Coleby was the better player. Maybe there were personal issues with Coleby that we don’t know about and he would’ve left regardless, but that’s the biggest head scratcher transfer situation of the Self era to me.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Unless you heard this from the coaching staff I’m not buying it. I think that was a narrative created by some fans. His brother was not trending as a big time recruit. If we are both just operating on opinion here, then we can just agree to disagree on this.
I’d certainly rather have Coleby over Whitman and as it turns out, nobody.

My son was born right after midnight so I believe great things can and do happen after midnight. Perhaps I would rephrase to…the ratio of bad to good things increases dramatically after midnight.
Here is one that is true…there are many reasons why the Police shows up at your hone in the middle of the night…and most of them are bad.

I feel like Coleby would have had a solid Jayhawk career without that knee injury. Obviously we will never know, but he was pretty athletic before, and after the injury he was afraid to jump.
I doubt there are many stones left to turn over right now but it is unfortunate this Robinson decision really dragged. Looks like the scholarship will remain vacant. Not the worst thing in the world, if there is a high impact mid-season transfer.
@KUSTEVE It’s all good, we need a mix. The truth is often in between the overly negative and overly positive posters.
-
@BShark There might be lots of behind the scenes things playing out regarding the transfer.
-
@JayHawkFanToo "My son was born right after midnight so I believe great things can and do happen after midnight. "
Our Grandson, too, who decided to wait for 17 hours so he could be born at 1:17 a.m. on July 5. Apparently was scared by all the noise out there so he took his time.

I know that’s why I was asking. It might have read as sarcasm but hell if I know he could be a big donor that gets to talk to the coaching staff or otherwise just has insider information on the situation. So I was curious if that’s the case or if he was speculating.
-
@BShark. That narrative was postulated by some of the recruiting experts because that was the only reason Self would’ve looked at a transfer like Maxwell in the first place. I never said Maxwell’s brother became a highly regarded recruit because he didn’t. His brother was all potential and never materialized. They gambled on the brother becoming a diamond in the rough and it didn’t pay off. Self has always been a gambler and sometimes you lose when you gamble and Self lost on the Maxwell gamble.

I am really surprised that some distant big player has not found his way to Lawrence to grab that waiting scholarship. Shucks, with just a little bit of big help this looks to be a Final Four squad. A rising European or South American star could immediately embellish his NBA draft potential and gain national attention by becoming a part of this ready made unit.

Lots of amateurism concerns with that route. It would be nice to get another post player on this team though, for sure.

@BShark My comment about behind the scenes was intended about your post on the Robinson transfer, meaning I thought there might still be a positive reason no news has come out. Such as working on getting the waiver applic ready to see how likely it is to be granted. Not talking about the past mystery signings/transfers of Whitman, etc. that you guys were discussing.
-
@JayHawkFanToo In your case you’re a responsible adult. I was talking to two anything but responsible teens.

Just found this when I popped on twitter.
-
Joe Jackson not exactly a nice guy.
-
@BShark Then again, sometimes if you look behind the curtain it is dark with nothing going on!
-
@BShark We’re going to have to play 4 out alot.
-
@KUSTEVE Should be good for Cunliffe’s minutes.
-
@BShark Even with the 4 out, I would think he’d get mop up minutes. I see him as the last option on the perimeter. Do you see more minutes for him?
-
I think it depends on how willing to do the dirty work he is. Athletically he is one of the better fits to play small ball 4 on the roster. Just needs to get right mentally and be willing to D up.
